Rolling US Charts in a sandbox

So Nells Furtado has yr. new number one hit, Beyonce dropping down to number two. Gwen Stefani f/ an African mf rises to the third spot. Fall Out Boy, Dateline Ludacris, & Daughtry hold down yr. 4-5-6. Gym Class Heroes enter the top ten at #7 (from #15). Bob With A Job rides the new video crest and re-enters at #8, and MC Pee Pants' "Flawsay Flawsay" leaps all the way from #31 to #9. "I Wanna Love You" by said African mf rounds out the top ten.

Said African mf also takes a big 30-11 leap with "Don't Matter", and from there down, it's pretty uninteresting. T.I.'s top back shoots 46-34. Baby Boy's "The Way I Live" jumps 11 points to # 41. Mims & Lily Allen do some travelling up the charts as well.

Good to see that Lily Allen song crawling up the charts. She roxor.

ugh, "Say It Right," why oh why? the chart is so depressing right now, the only songs on it that I don't hate are the ones that have been on there for months and months already.

It's always weak the first couple months of the year. Me, I'm trying to to get my head around multi-racial hip-hop with a dude from Fall Out Boy and a Supertramp sample. Still not sure what to think about that.

I thought you meant literal MC Pee Pants.

Wtvrs, Al. "Say It Right" is ace.

I dunno man, I didn't really need Timbaland to show me what forlorn scatting sounds like. "HEY...HEY...HEY...BOODOP BOODOP BOODOP" x 1000

I think I got over the initial shock of how awful Gym Class Heroes are a few months ago and now I'm just adjusting to the fact that they're probably going to be this year's Gnarls Barkley/BEP type quasi rap bullshit that outsells all the regular rap records.

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Friday, 16 February 2007 14:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, Gym Class Heroes feels like the return of a Shaggy "Angel" kinda thing. Let's hope there isn't a "It Wasn't Me" coming from these guys as well. One song should be enough from them.

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

"It Wasn't Me" >>>>>oo>>>>> "Angel".

The Reverend shines like a lighthouse (Rodney J. Greene), Friday, 16 February 2007 18:11 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, no way "Angel" was better than "It Wasn't Me," and I have no idea on what grounds it can be compared to "Cupid's Chokehold" (what, they're both interpolations of old songs?)

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Friday, 16 February 2007 18:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Me and a friend had an impromptu "It Wasn't Me" singalong yesterday.

I like "Say it Right," graceful

deej (deej), Friday, 16 February 2007 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

The production on "Say It Right" sounds murky. At first I thought it was just the mp3 I had, but it sounds like that on the radio, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 February 2007 19:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I was only comparing the two in feel. They both feel like made-for-MTV-Spring-Break college party songs. I also wasn't saying "Angel" was better than "It Wasn't Me" just saying hopefully (for me) there won't be a second ubiquitous single from these guys.

When's Mika gonna crack the US charts?

Kate Silver (barkleyforthree), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:08 (seventeen years ago) link

ok, I guess that makes a little more sense, but "It Wasn't Me" hit first, "Angel" was the follow-up.

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Oops. Sorry about that. All I know is my senior year in college I could not avoid the two, so it seemed like they may as well have been released simultaneously.

Kate, "Grace Kelly" was #81 last week, not sure if it's moved up this week or not.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh sweet fuck.

David RER (Frank Fiore), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Dropped to 86 this week. We don't go for that kind of silliness in the states (we listen to Hinder, instead, God help us).

Really, Mika in the US? That's kind of amazing.

musically (musically), Saturday, 17 February 2007 02:25 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah VH1 is playing the hell out of that video, and the song is really growing on me. kind of does seem rare that a Brit artist actually gets a big push in America less than 6 months after breaking in the U.K., for some reason there always seems to be a long lag.

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Saturday, 17 February 2007 03:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I want to start a STOP MIKA campaign. In the journalism lab, there's this one kid who blares Mika tracks all during class. HIS VOICE IS SOOOO ANNOYING THAT IT MAKES ME TYPE IN ALL CAPS.
