I am *very* honestly surprised that there were only two Cure submissions. (I should know, being one of them.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:39 (seventeen years ago) link

(Also, if the series keeps continuing, somebody's got to do a Fall book at some point. I'd vote Hex Enduction Hour.)

Kim Fowley - Outrageous

Okay, so which person in the room at EMP last year when the paper was presented pitched this one?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

At least there's only two Pet Shop Boys entries (one of which is mine).

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

John Mayer – Room for Squares

I have a couple of guesses as to who pitched this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

holy crap.

i didn't have it together enough to get any proposals in this time, but two of the albums i maybe woulda tried to get are overrepresented here anyway. wow.

Ray Cummings (skateboardr), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I was convinced there was a Pumpkins book already! Weird. Anyway, I don't regret not pitching that one; I'd still prefer to write a warts-and-all bio.

Anyway, in reviewing it all, the John Denver/Muppets one HAS to happen. Crossed fingers it's a good pitch.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Joanna Newsom – Ys

So soon?

Oh is the repetition "More than one person is doing this.."

M Grout (Mark Grout), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

is there a rule against compilation albums? No New York, Nuggets, Flex Your Head and others would make for great reads.

Queen – Flash Gordon

This would be good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

(Mine was the other one.)

And a better choice. (I don't mind At Budokan at all but I don't have the worship/identification for it so many other people do. Guess I was too young.)

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

dan selzer (dan selzer), Thursday, 15 February 2007 17:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Based on that profile of wacky Lee Hazlewood I read in the NY Times, I bet a book on one of his albums would be a fun read. But he's dying of cancer, so if the author wants to talk to him they'll have to hurry.

As I expected, the fact that only 3 of the initial 60 published were rap-related has likely discouraged virtually everyone from submitting any hiphop entries. Has anyone read that new (from a different publisher) "To the Break of Dawn-A Freestyle on the Hip-Hop Aesthetic book by Spellman Assistant Professor (and onetime Washington City Paper contributor) William Jelani Cobb? Sometimes I've liked Cobb's writing, other times I thought he was too fixated on the whole Native Tongues era in a stereotypical backpacker kind of way.

I love how all British dudes are commenting on the 33 1/3 blog about how a bunch of American records will not sell a single copy in the U.K. -- and then suggesting Unhalfbricking or the Blue Nile!

Matt Cibula (Formerly, the Haikunym), Friday, 16 February 2007 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

they're british, matt.

QED

rip torn vagina (sandboxhulkington), Friday, 16 February 2007 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't "dig" your fancy new alphabet style of talking, but if you're saying that all British people suck then I disagree. If you are saying that a few anonymous people are trying to sway a British book editor over to picking their UK-o-centric proposals over my US-o-centric one, then I say QED right back to you.

a mediocre black-and-white cookie in a cellophane wrapper (hanks1ockli), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:10 (seventeen years ago) link

this is pretty sad but i really can't imagine caring enough about any single album to want to write a whole book about it anymore

^@^ (map), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:13 (seventeen years ago) link

i guess the key would be finding a thematic hook that would absolve me from actually having to write about the music, but at that point it's like why not just write a screenplay or something instead

^@^ (map), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

reading that other thread on these books, the only thing i could think of that would be fun to write about and that would be "commercially viable" would be black sabbath. i see two people pitched black sabbath. i was kinda thinking paranoid would be the way to go. probably their most well-known. but probably any book on sabbath would be picked up by fans, so they are a good choice.

i still have never seen any of these books! but i don't live near any stores that would carry them.

I'd like to see a series on labels rather than records (I would pay much money for a Suburban Base profile!)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Why didn't anyone pitch CHINESE DEMOCRACY!~??!?!?

David RER (Frank Fiore), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, i should get those two at least. i never buy stuff like books on-line. just old dusty records. although i did just buy a cd from dark beloved cloud recently on-line! that is one way of showing my wolk-love.

scott seward (121212), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:32 (seventeen years ago) link

there already is a series about labels!

rip torn vagina (sandboxhulkington), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

There is??!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Is there a Sub Base book?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

i would MAYBE write the soulseek one, that'd be fun

^@^ (map), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i think i would also write the maxtor 1 terabyte hard drive one

^@^ (map), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:02 (seventeen years ago) link

i think the only two theyve done so far are warp and rough trade

rip torn vagina (sandboxhulkington), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh yeah wait I remember hearing about that. How is that series?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:07 (seventeen years ago) link

the rough trade one was okay. sorta like tigerbeat's guide to rough trade. and it's pretty clear that once we hit the smiths, rob young's interest in rough trade goes down the tubes quickly.

rip torn vagina (sandboxhulkington), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Next one is on 4AD. Wow these are a little price-y.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyone here bumped into a Tori fan lately?

Besides Dom and the Lex?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

pretty clear that once we hit the smiths, rob young's interest in rough trade goes down the tubes quickly.

no kidding. the first part of the book is actually ok. once we get to 1984, it falls off completely. and not one mention of wanna buy a bridge?, which is a pretty big omission. (granted, the us label compiled it, but still).

i will cry if someone else gets to do the colossal youth book.

Mike, what was the name of the fanzine (or fanzines) you used to do? I always liked them but am spacing on the titles.

I'll be extra upset about my This Nation's Saving Grace pitch not being accepted if freakin' Thursday gets through

Donna Brown (Morley Timmons), Saturday, 17 February 2007 03:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Mike A. of WRITERS BLOCK is totally the only person who deserves to do Colossal Youth.

Big up...

Lou Reed – Metal Machine Music
Lou Reed – Metal Machine Music
Lou Reed – Metal Machine Music

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I can't think of any legitimate way to do 10000 words of actually readable material on MMM. Three separate Reed pitches and they're all for the stupidest album he's ever made.

Lester Bangs managed it!

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 17 February 2007 13:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, but can it (should it) be done again?

Johnny Fever (johnnyfever), Saturday, 17 February 2007 13:39 (seventeen years ago) link

That is the reason I passed on writing about Talking Heads (I almost pitched MSABaF) and a bunch of other records -- what the hell else is to be said about it, after all that has already been written?

Matt Cibula (Formerly, the Haikunym), Saturday, 17 February 2007 13:42 (seventeen years ago) link

The only way to say anything interesting about MMM now would be to position it as the score for a fiction novel.

Johnny Fever (johnnyfever), Saturday, 17 February 2007 13:44 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, one about androids who hate each other!

Matt Cibula (Formerly, the Haikunym), Saturday, 17 February 2007 13:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I was going to pitch the blue album. But I did not.

i have used instrumental tracks by pizzicato five, miles davis, ornette coleman, and the flaming lips in writing assignments for jr. high and elem. school kids -- they LOVE p5 and ornette!

Wow, which tracks (esp. Miles and Ornette)?

Billy Joel – Songs in the Attic

what a strange choice for billy joel. so strange that i'd really like to read it. but i fear i've ruined billy's chances with 33 1/3 forever with my lame pitch for glass houses last time around. good luck to whoever's this is!

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 18 February 2007 22:42 (seventeen years ago) link

honestly, it's not like i even pitched a colossal youth book, so if someone else gets to do it, i have no one to blame but myself. the sad fact is that between work, school and family, i have no time to do it the way i'd want to (which would entail actually going to cardiff and london, tracking down a bunch of people, visiting foel studio, etc., etc., etc.). perhaps after i pass the bar in a couple years?

mike a (mike a), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I think it will be that long before they consider doing a book about a record with such a small sales history.

Certainly sounds like you have the exact right idea of how to do the book, no surprise there.

Good luck passing the bar!
