I totally don't understand. Am curious, especially RE Radiohead, because tons of people who know what they're talking about, I guess, seem to go nuts for them. I don't want to just gratuitously slag these people, I am just really interested to find out exactly what people like so much about any of them.

Then you've come to the wrong place

Tom D. (Dada), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:44 (seventeen years ago) link

it's hard to address the question. i don't see what the bands have in common. perhaps one thread on each band where you don't 'get' why people like them would be a good move.

Ryan Adams I have never got. Tom waits I've kind of got in the last three years and can totally understand the appeal. Radiohead I've always grudgingly admired but never really liked. The Stone Roses I adored and though I still did in a "never need to listen to them ever again" way, until I actually did put the first album on the other day and it struck me as being pretty fucking dull. Love Fools Gold still, though.

i love tom waits – his narratives may deal in well-worn clichés at times but he frames them enormously well, I think at his best he was very aware of how familiar these characters and stories were, and it was the way he took this street folklore and made it convincingly human which was so special. he has a great deal of sympathy for the people in his songs. plus, great beats! though the experimental side isn’t everything I love about him, my favourite waits songs are where he waxes philosophical or romantic (‘time’, ‘blue valentine’). didn’t much like either of his last two albums though – I think he’s finally tipped into self-parody and pointless retreading of old work, though he had a good innings I guess.

the others, I’m as baffled as you are. stone roses really are the worst of the worst.

lexpretend (lexpretend), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:54 (seventeen years ago) link

nb, i love waits' voice but can totally understand why people would hate it, kind of like bjork or joanna newsom.

lexpretend (lexpretend), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't like Tom Waits. Never really bothered with Radiohead but I don't hate them. Stone Roses are inoffensive but annoyingly over-rated. Never heard Ryan Adams and will never ever EVER be able to hear/see his name without thinking of Bryan Adams first.

Tom D. (Dada), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:58 (seventeen years ago) link

never got tom waits, and from what i've heard, no idea in what way what he's talking about is familiar! if anything that's why i'm not sold. like the song they use for 'the wire' but his version is the least good.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never heard anything by Ryan Adams. Tom Waits has an okay attitude, but sounds a bit too much self-consciously arty. Radiohead are wanky. Stone Roses have a couple of nice tunes you can dance to, but they also sound British in a bad way.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Stone Roses are basically like The Gap Band or Kool and the Gang or something, as long as DJs keep playing that stuff it'll keep living.

The one thing I noticed when I moved up north is that the The Jam badges on 14 year old kids' backpacks get replaced with Stone Roses ones.

White Collar Boxer (DomPassantino), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:04 (seventeen years ago) link

stone roses are likely to baffle anyone younger than... well, me and nick.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I think The Stone Roses had about four really wonderful songs, about four really wonderful jams, and the rest is all myth.

Sick Mouthy (sickmouthy), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:08 (seventeen years ago) link

cripes, i find myself liking them more than nick.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:10 (seventeen years ago) link

i wonder if dom's right? they seem to have fallen off the radar a bit, the myth has died a little? as with the pixies. time does that.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Shall we do a "The Second Coming" is basically slright?

We haven't done one for aaaaaaaaaages.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:14 (seventeen years ago) link

The Pixies still have a fair bit of resonance, I think. Maybe only with a *certain type* of person, but there are a lot of them

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:18 (seventeen years ago) link

The Stone Roses have just kind of slipped into AOR-fave classicism, which The Pixies never will, if only for the lyric about being bought a soda and molested in a parking lot.

I like The Pixies.

Sick Mouthy (sickmouthy), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:23 (seventeen years ago) link

But who can be bothered listening to them these days? What I mean is, I can't be bothered listening to them these days

Tom D. (Dada), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:26 (seventeen years ago) link

that's what you mean. i been listening to them.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I get enough of them just by accident, y'know in between bands at gigs or whatever, that it's not that essential to go to the trouble of putting a record on

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:32 (seventeen years ago) link

pixies is another one but only because of Frank Black. Person looking over my shoulder said I should have asked whetheranyone could see some kind of common denominator with all those people.

I think he’s finally tipped into self-parody and pointless retreading of old work

I thought that happened around 'Frank's Wild Years', still love him to bits though for reasons Lex outlined above.

Briefly:

Radiohead: Hail To The Thief
Ryan Adams: Strangers Almanac (Whiskeytown)
Tom Waits: Rain Dogs
Stone Roses: The debut

i know what big in japan sounds like, i understand waits's percussive tendencies, i would never refer to them as GREAT BEATZ

well ok i can spell it out as "i like the sounds waits experiments with, including great beats", but dude it was just an offhand phrase in the first place

lexpretend (lexpretend), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never bothered with Ryan Adams or the Stone Roses. Radiohead are fine.

I love Tom Waits, but mostly for the beatz.

Three different flavors of Ryan Adams. One thing applies though. Heartbreaker is essential for just about every single person on this planet.
