Called "My Violent Heart"...the chorus is incredible!

Also, more electronic based than any major song Reznor's ever done.

I like it, a bit of a grower but it's getting me geared up for the album.

I definitely support this:

I LIKED THIS BETTER WHEN IT WAS CALLED "KISS THEM FOR ME" AND SUE Z AND THE BANCHEES SANG IT

what's an ARG?

StanM (StanM), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:44 (seventeen years ago) link

"Alternate Reality Game" - at least it looks like one so far.

oh great

trent is another one who has forgotten how to write a hook.

"Survivalism" was premiered today on KROQ. It's pretty rad.

Ivan (Ivan), Saturday, 17 February 2007 06:43 (seventeen years ago) link

On first listen, I find this pretty horrible.

baaderonixx (baaderonixx), Saturday, 17 February 2007 08:10 (seventeen years ago) link

survivalism = "warm leatherette" at double speed plus crappy chorus

GAWD PVNCH (yournullfame), Saturday, 17 February 2007 10:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i like 'em both, but i prefer "my violent heart"

latebloomer's goddamn throat is on fire (clonefeed), Saturday, 17 February 2007 11:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, if "Survivalism" is the first single...um.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 03:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I love the breaks after each chorus as well as the solo but that's not enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 03:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Don't make Trent angsty. YOU WOULDN'T LIKE HIM WHEN HE'S ANGSTY.

Best of the three so far. Very Aphexy, I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 06:00 (seventeen years ago) link

otm. i'm really digging the more electronic direction!

scary german latebloomer (clonefeed), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 09:39 (seventeen years ago) link

what's wrong with the rapidshare link? I've waited 5 mins (!) but still no DL..

baaderonixx (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 10:17 (seventeen years ago) link

"Survivalism" = kinda boring, I thought. But maybe it'll make more sense when I hear it in the context of the album?

Ray Cummings (skateboardr), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 12:46 (seventeen years ago) link

This stuff doesn't strike me as being particularly more electronic than The Downward Spiral. None of them have really hooked in me yet either. Maybe I've changed, maybe Trent's changed, maybe I just need to give 'em a few more listens.

Also, intro to Me, I'm Not v reminiscent of Depeche Mode's Home.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Heard "Head Like a Hole" while walking past the entrance to The Cheesecake Factory last week. For a moment, it was just the verse, and therefore kinda sucky. Then, for a moment, the chorus came in like the best thing in the universe. But by that time I was halfway past Niketown and mostly just hearing buses.

well, it was deleted. maybe that's the problem?

and not nearly as noisy or weird (relatively speaking) or interesting!

GAWD PVNCH (yournullfame), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah that's pretty much what I'm thinking.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Complaints complaints.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I'm in teh consensus saying taht so far 'Me, I'm Not' is the only decent song of the bunch. I wouldn't normally criticize Reznor for repeating himself, but with all the talk of how revolutionary this new lp would be, I find the leaked stuff very predictable and safe.

i'm not expecting another downward spiral (there's no way trent will ever top that), so with those lowered expectations these sound pretty good. the real test is how they sound in the context of the album. these aren't really single material. i'm also admittedly a die-hard fan, so i'm biased.

true, but i was thinking more in comparison With Teeth, which largely tried to go for a more accessible semi-live "rock" sound (some of it successfully, some of it not so much).

My Violent Heart = MC 900 Ft. Reznor. Can't see this as being more "electronic based" than, say, the whole of Pretty Hate Machine, which (albeit arguably) seems to contain an "important song" or two. Anyway, it's hookless, tuneless, shapeless. Basically sucks, though certain portions may go down well with new rave Tyvek trousers purchased in Antwerp. Of note to historians: "Into fire you can send us / From the fire we return / You can label us a consequence / Of how much you have to learn." I'm not making this up.

Survival = the Butthole Surfers record that John Paul Jones played Ministry with. Plus way-cool synth arpeggio thing. Approximately a billion times better than "Violent Heart" (therefore, 1/10 as good as that ridiculous G'n'R track). Fuck, how annoying is that "bloa-ted bel-ly" phrasing? Really fucking annoying? Yah, I know.

Me, I'm Not = Nine Inch Nails Pro-Tools plug-in. Sounds almost exactly like the real thing. Except with no tunez (I guess you have to add that part yourself). Lack of hitmusik potential aside, it does eventually build to an enjoyably psychedelic head. And woozy synth thing is v cool. Maybe woozy synth thing = "hook"? Go w/ that.

You listen to the lyrics?

I did. Not recommending it.
