If they make it to prison they`re lucky and they can use their hard earned "dope" money to pay for protection or rent! If they make it on TV they really lucky and usually "punk out" abandon the game, they hood and get that fuck outta dodge to the suburbs and mail they crew a check! But for the majority with no record deals or videos there`s no pool party with half naked girls for them, except the pool of blood they gonna be layin in with they stomach and eyeball blew out, their Bling laying in their lungs, gasping for air with shit leaking out of their asses while people dig thru their pockets and snatch that fuckin Bling off their neck. The only place they "make it" to is stacked up naked in the freezer of an overcrowded morgue we have here.

We need hi-tech Dreams and thoughts in the hood even more now than ever because the technology gap is widening!

also true in hip hop, leaving producers without online access, digital distribution etc.

Musically, I love UR but the political posturing is as empty as it is misguided.

Just saying.

iain macdonald (the_article_don), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 12:00 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah but it's not "real" politics so it's nonsensical to make that sort of judgement

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:42 (seventeen years ago) link

also isn't it sort of harsh to say his politics are "misguided" when they basically boil down to "more opportunity for people from detroit"? what's misguided about that?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:44 (seventeen years ago) link

his "politics" are fake, and yeah, the image of the drug dealer getting his lungs + eyes blown is fantasy too. i imagine most drug dealers end up in jail or in dead-end jobs, not dead. and it's a specific fantasy meant to appeal to people in a sort of similar way to the way the images in industrial or goth music appeal to people (your engagement w/ horror is proof of your sensitivity)

OTOH it's hard to argue that this isn't at least a more constructive fantasy than coke-rap fantasy

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 15:54 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not nonsensical to make that sort of judgment - try telling Mike Banks that his politics are not "real".

I have no truck with "more opportunity for people from Detroit" but that isn't UR's politics - their politics are a kind of manifesto for overthrowing some conspitaorial new world order through sonic terrorism, hence the "UR - revolution for change" slogan, when it should really be "UR - well executed electronic music that has almost no political significance at all". I'm not denying that the fascinations with Native American Indians, Bruce Lee, Mr Spock etc (see sleeve of 1st Intergalactic Baptist Church for full roll call of UR heoes and influences) doesn't add a certain mystique to UR, just that it doesn't give them any more political gravitas (in my eyes) than 99% of other decent dance acts.

i actually happen to think mike banks is smart enough to use metaphor

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Looking back on the development of the label what would you say were the turning points?

Japanese music technology, The fax machine and the development of the internet. Three technologies that functioned as transporter beams for our purpose.

t/s: mike banks using metaphor vs mike banks think the fax machine works via a beam

"i actually happen to think mike banks is smart enough to use metaphor"

I don't. he's black and from detroit.

Japanese music technology, The fax machine and the development of the internet. Three technologies that functioned as transporter beams for our purpose.

t/s: using the term "transporter beams for our purpose" v "helped us get our music out to our audience"

Wow so being black and from detroit means he's stupid?

Don't see whats so fake about his politics, black people are still opressed by tv, radio and the press

X-101 (X-101), Thursday, 15 February 2007 08:52 (seventeen years ago) link

...and by the school system, hence he actually is stupid

Of course not, that was a joke. Vahid appeareed to be suggesting that some of "Mad" Mike's eccentric outpourings were metaphorical while I was taking them literally, which was not the case. If Mike Banks is smart enough to make the far thinking music he makes (I suggested at the outset that I was a fan) then I'm sure that he's capable of using metaphor. However, whether metaphorical or literal, many of his political outporings are horesehit. Certainly not fake, though.

T/S: sensible debates v posting stupid cartoons
Your html brilliance leaves me feeling hopelessly inadequate.
