I love the Who, and have a copy of John Dougan's book on "The Who Sell Out" folded over one knee right now. I have no need to hear anything past that album ever again.

You have to check his "The Clash, classic ort duds" Thread for context.

On POTP last Sunday they were doing the Top 20 w/e 29 Nov 67. "I Can See For Miles" was at #18 and clearly seventeen places too low, especially considering all the MoR muck higher up.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

We were listening to that in the car on the way home. Those ballads sounded at least 5 years out of time, eh?

Domino Man (Modal Fugue), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

It says something that only two out of that top ten were actually uptempo records ("Baby Now That I've Found You" and "Hello Goodbye").

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

I hadn't listened to "Baby Now That I've Found You" and it sounded more lumbering than I remembered. "Build Me Up Buttercup" is still my favourite, I think.

Domino Man (Modal Fugue), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

I do like it still but I understand why others might find it a bit plodding.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Good band, annoying frontman.

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

I thought you meant the Foundations for a minute.

Don't get me wrong, "Baby Now That I've Found You" is still wonderful, it was just a few BPM slower than I remembered. I wonder if pub DJs play it a bit fast sometimes.

I love "Hello Goodbye" a lot too. It's quite an odd single isn't it? It's essentially nothing but chorus, and then the coda.

My Mind is Opener than Yours (Modal Fugue), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

More about all of this here.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

previous Top 20 and that week’s new Top 20, he was apt to put in his own lovable bias; thus if his beloved Iron Maiden or Def Leppard had had a new entry, cue the Hallelujah Chorus blast – usually accompanied by Freeman solemnly intoning “The miracle has occurred” - and if there were some dreadful MoR or novelty tack at number one we would get Reg Presley’s “Awww NOOOO!” from “I Can’t Control Myself.”

You know, this is the sort of stuff JK and Joel aspire to, bless them. But they can't do it like "Ah I know you don't agree, just laugh anyway"

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

Or else they would throw a strop, like DLT did when he had to play "Complete Control."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

oh, and it's "Petra Haden" btw. Fine album! Only one I ever got after hearing a track on an Uncut CD!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

sigh, get me a brain, someone...*corrected*

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and that Val Doonican song really should have been called "If the whole world stopped loving, the way you stopped loving me (you bastard)". See westlife doing that, ever?

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Val Doonican is Daniel O'Donnell's dad, innit?

My Mind is Opener than Yours (Modal Fugue), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

I have borne recent witness to Westlife's slaughter of the greatest number one single ever, next to which Val Doonican is Edgard Varese.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

(clue: it is on their current chart-topping album)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

They've done "Yes Sir I Can Boogie"?

My Mind is Opener than Yours (Modal Fugue), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

clearly! (xpost hhm? Voodoo Chile?)

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

"Born to Make You Happy"?

My Mind is Opener than Yours (Modal Fugue), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

ach, I have sen the track listing.

Assuming yr not a "Total Eclipse" fan, I thought you'd listen to my reasoning!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

I've done my best to avoid having to pollute my ears with the latter. Though it would certainly be up there.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

the new album is suprisingly good!
