The Dad in Say Anything singing Ricki Don't Lose That Number

My (probably unpoplular) choice: the band playing Freebird at dad's funeral with the fire sprinklers going off in Elizabethtown.

in your eyes of course, tho i really liked his use of 'my cherie amour' in the Penny Lane stomach pump scene in Almost Famous - transforming it into a bizarrely erotic/romantic moment.

I always liked the Springsteen song in Jerry Maguire.

I always liked the Durutti Column music used in Jerry Maguire...and the Paul McCartney song at the end of Vanilla Sky worked pretty well...

henry s (henry s), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 15:37 (seventeen years ago) link

If I didn't think that RoboCruise and Renee Zellweger were gargoyles of doom I'd say the scoring of their first kiss to Paul McCartney's "Singalong Junk."

one month passes...
That Rikki scene is great. Although no props yet for Singles? It was, like, Four Weddings for people who'd actually listened to some contemporary music!

Mippy (Mippy), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 22:54 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe 'good vibrations' in vanilla sky. i love that bit.

that awful jazz shit when Renee Zellweger and Tom Cruise have sex in Jerry Maguire

so many bad movies, I think I hate all of them except for Say Anything

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 23:44 (seventeen years ago) link

You hate Fast Times At Ridgemont High?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 23:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean otherwise yeah fuck Cameron Crowe, but Fast Times is great.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 23:45 (seventeen years ago) link

he didn't direct it

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 23:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah but he wrote it. I think of it as at least as much his as Heckerling's (who at least had one other great movie in Clueless if not much else.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 23:49 (seventeen years ago) link

don't get me wrong I love Fast Times, own a copy, seen many times etc etc. I guess I don't consider it really "his" movie cuz it lacks all the shitty trademarks found in the films he actually directed (even Say Anything has its moments of unwatchable schmaltz).

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 23:51 (seventeen years ago) link

The subplot where Frasier's dad turns out to be a monster is what ruins Say Anything for me. It would be a great movie if not for that (s'okay even with it.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 23:54 (seventeen years ago) link

The use of Sleep's "Dragonaut" in Gummo.

but she needed a reason to dis him in the malibu

keith (keithkeith), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 04:32 (seventeen years ago) link

wasn't Frasier's dad also a monster in Singles?...or was that Reality Bites?

henry s (henry s), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 14:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Yep - and also in "Barton Fink" too! (Drunken wife-beating William Faulkner type.)

Myonga Von Bootee (Monty Von Bygone), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Frasier's Dad was a monster in Frasier too! He was always so cruel to his kids!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

was nice to his dog, though...

henry s (henry s), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

oh fuck it, let's kick his ass!!

henry s (henry s), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

no he's great in Barton Fink!!!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Frasier's Dad was a jerk in Tin Men too, but the Heart Attack changed all that.

Outcast Lemon Mode (sandglocks), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Frasier's Dad was great on Broadway in The House of Blue Leaves.

The only thing that ruins any of Say Anything is Peter Gabriel, of course. Crowe consistently mediocre since (not that I saw the last two).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 14 February 2007 20:24 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah the Peter Gabriel scene is pretty bad
