I'm excited about this decade's Appetite For Destruction/Marquee Moon/Sgt. Pepper's being released this year.

Not sure, based on a quick scan of the list. Maybe 5 or so. OK Computer, Ultra, New Lands I think, Young Team?

Now we're getting to a subject very near and dear to me: the greatness of 1997. The best year for albums since 1977, or maybe even 1971. Just look at all the masterpieces released that year:

Built To Spill: Perfect From Now On
Sleater-Kinney: Dig Me Out
Yo La Tengo: I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One
Belle & Sebastian: If You're Feeling Sinister
Radiohead: OK Computer
Bob Dylan: Time Out Of Mind
The Verve: Urban Hymns
Pavement: Brighten The Corners
Modest Mouse: The Lonesome Crowded West
Whiskeytown: Stranger's Almanac

There's tons more. What a year, holy mackerel!!!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 20:40 (seventeen years ago) link

1997 was coincidentally one of the shittiest years for hip-hop ever. Half a good Biggie album, half a good Wu-Tang album, half a good Jay-Z album and some pretty good Missy and Puffy singles.

If it wasn't for "It's All About The Benjamins" and Funcrusher Plus, you could pretty much just call it a wash.

Whiney what about CNN?!?! And if you were a No Limit fan it was a great year, I guess (it was sort of a blur flashy CD covers if you weren't.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, No Limit and C-N-N were bringing it, but I wouldn't exactly put any of their output against Marquee Moon or Sgt. Peppers.

"Well I don't really rate either of those albums so I can't compare, but was there stuff from 1996 and 1998 that you would?"

Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
The Fugees - The Score
OutKast - Stankonia

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I would maybe put Funcrusher Plus up against, like, Big Black's Songs About Fucking.

Stankonia for sure, but the Fugees...? puhleeze

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I actually like The War Report better than any of those '96 and '98 records you named.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Right, but this thread seems more about impact than personal preference.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay then yeah '97 kind of lacks an impact record (Torque and Supa Dupa Fly are probably the closest, but the former sort signaled the end of something and the latter was so quickly superceded by everything both Missy/Tim did.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Also was Stankonia actually 1998? I thought it was '00? Do you mean Aquemini?

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Are we counting any of the years this decade haha?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean I'm not going to argue that '97 was a great (it wasn't) but there've been years since which certainly have seemed weaker to me (and which certainly don't have albums as classic as Stone Crazy or The War Report.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Kool Keith - Sex Style

I forgot! Still Kool Keith's best album.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, that list was unnecessarily long, but TONS of great records came out in '97. Whatever you think of 'em, a lot of records on that list I barfed out up there hold their own with the best of the decade (esp. Belle & Sebastian, Chemical Bros., Company Flow, Daft Punk, Dimmmu Borgir, Elliott Smith, Emperor, Fu Manchu, Pan Sonic, Portishead, Radiohead, Sleater Kinney, Satyricon, Squarepusher, Turbonegro and Yo La Tengo).

Shitty year for hip-hop, granted.

MJG's solo album was that year, I think thats really underrated. Three-6's world domination was that year. No Way Out is good but I'm not gonna bother defending that because really its trife territory. Camp Lo's Uptown Saturday Night was '97. Ghetto D. Twista's Adrenaline Rush. Mystikal's Unpredictable. B-Legit's Hemp Museum. That Rakim comeback album. I haven't listened to Trick Daddy's True Story in ages so i have no idea if it was good.

"Okay have fun with 2005."

I think the four big Houston albums (Mike Jones, Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Chamillionaire) adds up to one Reasonable Doubt.

The coke-rap stuff (Dipset, Jeezy, Clipse) didn't have better singles than No Limit, but had better albums.

Actually, 1997 might have this one beat...

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 22:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh man Rhythmalism is '98 not '97. Allmusic hates it! I think its maybe my favorite Quik album. Ouch @ this review though:
Review by Chris Slawecki
Considering its guest list — packed with enough star power (El DeBarge, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Peter Gunz, Hi-C, AMG, and 2nd II None) to fill a "Wrestlemania" card — Rhythm-al-ism promises more than it actually delivers. Its cleverest moments ("Medley for a 'V' (The Pussy Medley)") address colloquialisms for genitalia and all the wonderful things it's good for. "Down, Down, Down," "I Useta Know Her," and "No Doubt" (rhymes with: "I got something for your mouth") are plain nasty. Just what rap needs: one more guy boasting about his majestic penis and how good he is at treating women like gutter trash.

"i can't believe there are people slagging off 97 when there are also people saying 96 was a good year for pop."

I don't know about pop, but '96 was a very solid year for hip hop and it was the last year jungle (hello jump up) really mattered.

Comrades, meet Tildo Durd (Scourage), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

[1996] was the last year jungle (hello jump up) really mattered.

I admit to liking the gentrified cocktail drum'n'bass fusion hoo-ha to a mild extent (though jungle ca. '94 > all), so I'm biased. But uh hey J Majik? Jonny L? Photek? The aforementioned Torque?

f. scott baio (natepatrin), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 19:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Some of that stuff is good, but it feels like it all was consciously trying to distance itself from jungle (hence the name change as well.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Makes sense. Maybe:
1996: last year jungle-qua-jungle mattered
1997: first and probably also last year drum'n'bass'n'1973 Hancock mattered

Considering The Secret Tapes of Dr. Eich came out in 1996, this is hardly a praise for 1997. (Okay, some of the tracks on that were already years old by then, but there's also superb new tracks like "Paperclip Man".) Or am I the only one who finds MSAFARA sappy and sentimentalist in a bad way?

1997 was also the year of Fat of the Land and the electronica hype. And "Bittersweet Symphony". And "New Paths to Helicon". And Bad Timing. And The Color and the Shape.

It was also the year of "MmmmBop", "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", Pop, and "Mo Money, Mo Problems." So, it wasn't all good news.

2006 was the worst year ever for music, and I bet 2007'll be even worse.
