Really digging Naked City today, and the guitar tones kill. So where should I be starting with The Boredoms?

Jon Williams not to thread, because he hates them so.

Get the Japanese version of Pop Tatari and find Vision Creation Newsun. Then get everything else. Then travel back in time and see them live as much as possible.

The live thing is really the key.
It's like asking (and forgive the analogy) where to start with the Beatles; there are many Boredoms, young warrior. Which do you wish to undertake?

forksclovetofu (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 31 December 2006 20:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Pretty much what he said, though I'd grudgingly recommend Chocolate Synthesizer over Pop Tatari.

I still remember the first time I ever heard 'em -- Shimmy-Disc releasing Soul Discharge back in 1990. Reviewed it for KLA airplay and was utterly befuddled, in the best possible way.

Hey, I'm confessing my ignorance here and coming to ILM hat in hand. Ya don't gotta rub it in!

What's the difference between the Japanese and American releases of Pop Tatari other than the change from "Cocacola" to "Bocabola"? And where does the UK reissue on Very Friendly fit in?

telephonething (telephonething), Sunday, 31 December 2006 21:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I recommend Soul Discharge and Super AE, and then accepting that they're massively overrated and moving on.

Super Ae, now. One of my favorite albums, with "Super Shine" being some of the best music I've heard.

Ivan Gallardo (Ivan), Sunday, 31 December 2006 22:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Super AE fifthed. I am also partial to Rebore Vol. 0 as well.

Super AE 6th'd - and Vision, Creation, NewSun. But if you can see them do 'Vision, Creation, NewSun' live, even better.

Not meanin' to rub it in... just underscoring the difficulty!
Super AE 7th, then VCNewsun as a good inroads.

Vision Creation Newsun is indestructable.

Don't forget to grab some Hanatarash after you get through Boredoms.

VCN and rebore vol. 0 is a pretty good double-act.

S'okay. I like a challenge. Happy New Year!

Actually, an Amoeba run sounds like a great way to start 2007...

Hanatarash! That shit is NUTS. EYE is a weird, weird man but he knows how to make lots of noise and I respect that.

Cameron Octigan (cameron octigan), Monday, 1 January 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

i guess if i had to pick only one, it would have to be chocolate synthesizer.

If you love Naked City you can probably dive in anywhere. Most people would be best off starting at the end and working backward.

Back from Amoeba.

WTF, ILM? Why didn't you tell me about these guys sooner?

hahaha

Pay attention, son.

all of it.
get all of it.

Yeah.

My personal order of discovery was: Super Ae, Soul Discharge, Pop Tatari, Vision Creation Newsun! (I still think it needs an exclamation point), Chocolate Synthesizer, and then lots of other stuff I'm still finding.

This was all in the space of about a month, though. Once I heard this band, I couldn't hear enough of this band. Still one of the bands that NEVER leaves my iPod.

they call me candle guy (kenan), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 06:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Hee hee.

I just put on VCN again, and fuck it if I'm bugging the neighbors. That first track is like being in someone else's car when they're driving way too fast. At first you're nervous, but once the needle gets to about 110, you can't do anything but grin.

they call me candle guy (kenan), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 07:09 (seventeen years ago) link

With the caveat that I absolutely fuggin' HATE Naked City and love the Boredoms, I'd say to start with Pop Tatari and move both backwards and forwards from there. Don't matter if you get the Japanese or the Merkin edition. Some sequencing/titling differences, but it's the same damn album.

Pop Tatari is sorta the culmination of Boredoms v1.0. Boredoms as rock band (punk, hardcore, metal, whatever). Noisy as fuck, splattered and broken, but never quite abstract. Catastrophic, surrealist pop collage. Very much in line with what Zorn was up to during the 80s, but nowhere near as uptight. The Super Roots EP that came out around this time is also highly recommended.

Earlier stuff is much more punk. Combination of Melvins/Buttholes sludge rock and frenzied hardcore shrieking, clanging. Awesome, but formative. And after Pop Tatari they become increasingly abstract. Chocolate Synthesizer often feels like the dub version of Pop Tatari.

If yr. less interested in rock for rock's sake, go with the consensus and pick up Vision Creation Newsun and/or Super AE. Amazing records that kick off the much celebrated Boredoms v3.0. Drony, trippy, cosmic-leaning tribal space jams. Recent stuff doesn't have the technicolor audio-assault appeal of the early recordings, but it's much richer and at least 99% less goofy.
