Pistols at dawn?

"Five years ago Paris Hilton's album would have done really well over here (in the UK), because we didn't have things like the Internet; we didn't have bands like myself or the Arctic Monkeys," Allen said.

"Now people can see (Paris) for what she is, and think: 'Go away! What makes you think you have a life?' Paris Hilton's album did really badly over here and I just think it's so boring and pathetic and it shouldn't happen. It's just laziness. People cheesy enough to buy albums like that should be killed."

Lily Allen has publicly decried Paris Hilton, claiming her music career is a fad.

what's wrong with Paris making an album...

Jewel kept on doing it after her debut. i wanna hear Paris. i'm curious.

Daniel Reifferscheid (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:30 (seventeen years ago) link

alright, not mumbly exactly. but she sounds like she's trying to hide a lit cigarette in her mouth while she's singing.

did they try and sell her first album in the US? have i been blissfully ignorant for that long?

GAWD PVNCH (yournullfame), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:38 (seventeen years ago) link

they definitely turned up the marketing heat w. this one and i think tried to reposition her as 'cool'. i hate her so much, so very very much.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I remember the reviews for the first album being all "like yer Norah Jones/Katie Meula but WITH AN EDGE!" In a funny way I suppose the second album HAS been marketed more agressively, I've read a lot of positive reviews - but they all seemed to take the "this album will fail but it shouldn't cos it's GREAT!" approach.

Daniel Reifferscheid (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 16 February 2007 13:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Lily Allen was on SNL last week. Host Forest Whitaker kicked her ass on vocals, who knew he could sing? She has 0 stage presence, but my wife liked her. I dunno, maybe she can be the distaff Madness for Americans.

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 16 February 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

"Smile" is catchy, but so's the clap. Be careful out there.

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 16 February 2007 14:55 (seventeen years ago) link

i have this nightmare where mike skinner and lily allen get together and have 20 bulgy-eyed, dirty faced, ugly little children who wander around lisping semi-rhymed couplets about every detail of their lives and occasionally breaking into a maudlin singsong chorus about how their sandwich doesn't have marmite on it or they lost their cellphone or something.

GAWD PVNCH (yournullfame), Friday, 16 February 2007 15:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I wonder if UK foax are embarrassed by Lily Allen, like she's a sister or too much "like them" and the similarities are uncomfortable, and they can see all these little details that nag at them? The quote above is horrible, obv, but it doesn't change the way I hear her music. In a certain way it's exactly the kind of ill-considered, punching-above-her-weight, wrong-headed blurting that makes her songs so enjoyable (to me).

xpost haha so that's a yes, then!

rip torn vagina (sandboxhulkington), Friday, 16 February 2007 15:34 (seventeen years ago) link

wasn't she sort of mor-'credible' in the same way that sheryl crow was? not hip but not a figure of fun either. her album was the first pop album to be talked about on newsnight review over here, so it had some degree of being taken seriously

i mean, i never thought i'd ever type these words but sheryl crow would be considered legitimately "credible" by contrast

not hipster-credible! in the same way that, i dunno, millions of people buy james blunt albums because he's sensitive and writes his own song and is "genuinely talented not like that manufactured pop pap" or whatever their reasons are. ie not an object of derision like, i dunno, lindsay lohan. what little publicity she got here was kind of like that, clearly different in america though.

lexpretend (lexpretend), Friday, 16 February 2007 15:41 (seventeen years ago) link

no, you're right, james blunt hasn't been an object of derision at all.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Friday, 16 February 2007 15:43 (seventeen years ago) link

the difference is that james blunt sold a buttload of records over here too, whereas i think lisa marie being kept on a label is more of an "elvis will strike us down from beyond the grave if we don't put this album out." plus the, uh, world market, i guess. lisa marie's definitely one of those "famous for being famous" types over here.

rip torn vagina (sandboxhulkington), Friday, 16 February 2007 15:44 (seventeen years ago) link

If Keith Allen had died at the age of 32, we'd have had the stand-up, the pro-gay reggae record, and the Comic Strip films (including Gino, Fistful of Travellers' Cheques and The Bullshitters). Not a bad legacy!
