Who paints a picture?

Some albums feel so much like they're painting a picture that I can almost feel the strokes of a brush.

Kate Bush "Aerial" and Moody Blues "Days of Future Passed" come to mind right away. Is this effect particular to strings or can it be achieved with other instrumentation - what other records feel like this?

Yes, but playing brass and woodwind instruments with a brush is much more difficult and advanced.
