Still haven't heard the album, but I like this more than the first single (video is horrible, tho).

I take your thoughts on THE NEW KILLERS SINGLE.

That's the video at the drive in movie & such?

It's tuneful.

The synth-horns are as awful as the video.

yes the synth horns are horrendous...this after that fucking awful string section on the first track...the first record was bad but this one is somehow even worse....surely the band themselves don't suggest those ridiculous production quirks in every track.....

I like the synth horns; it's like Andrew W.K. I don't see how the Killers could possibly work as a less cartoonish entity.

I was listening the Chameleons “Up the Down Escalator” in my car last week and I couldn’t help but be reminded of the Killers at certain points. They certainly have their differences but I also think they're one of the bands that the Killers sound like they're copying the most at times.

And very very badly at that.

This song grew on me after I was initially completely repulsed by it, which I realized recently is an apt description of my relationship with almost every Killers single.

Fuck the haters, the synth horns are ace.

I loathe the vid, through.

This is the one track on the album I absolutely can't stand and always skip to the next track. When those horns start is about the moment when I skip.

Has anyone heard australian band Eskimo Joe's recent stuff (like "Black Fingernails, Red Wine")? It's a lot like the Killers' recent stuff except people don't think of it is as cartoonish at all.

And yet i totally think of the Killers as cartoonish.

Odd.

"When You Were Young" ended up as my number-two single of the year, and "Read My Mind" would have been a superb followup. Alas.

Don't you want to come with me?
Don't you want to feel my bones on your bones? It's only natural.
Don't you want to swim with me?
Don't you want to feel my skin on your skin? It's only natural.

The video kinda sucks but I have to say, Tim Burton's CGI skeletons do a pretty good job of mimicking Brandon Flowers' incredibly awkward bodily movements.

bling (confessions of a king) should have been the single

Funny that they got Tim Burton to direct the video, and the song reminds me of latter-day Oingo Boingo.

I remember hearing this at one of their warm-up gigs, thinking it would make an excellent single, then being totally befuddled when I heard the album version. I still haven't gotten comfortable with the synth horns or the Queen-y gang vox parts yet.

i like the 'latin' touches to this (e.g. the bit before the chorus), a bit. video concept is boring 7 years after 'Hey Boy Hey Girl'.

sede vacante (blueski), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

now wondering if The Killers could've written a better (or just synthier and more bombastic) version of The Strokes 'Whatever Happened To...' like what I'm hearing in my head.

am i imagining this or are there some european techno remixes of this?
