a desperate cry for help from former ilmer

Ok. I really need your help here, ILM. I didn't know where else to turn. I have a serious gap in my memory. I tried to come back to ILM to ask you guys to help me figure out a song title.. but you were gone! I managed to find this secret outpost of ILM and have come to pose my question before you. Help me ILM, you're my only hope.

I can't remember the title/artist of a particular song. In fact i can't remember anything about the song really.. Except that i think its in 3/4 time. It guitar driven. Alternative/rock from the late 90s or early 2000s. I seem to remember it being sort industrial rocky.. or droney.. but I don't know. I think the band was a three piece.. north american.

I remember no portion of the lyrics, song title or artist name.

Can anyone help?

also, is there any way to search ILM archives right now? that may help.

i expect every shot to be in the dark on this one. i understand it is extremely vague. this is the source of my dilemma.

astroblaster (astroblaster), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

it's neither rush nor clockhammer.

the song is not proggy at all.. i think thats why its interesting to me.. it was straight up rock in what i recall to be 3/4 time

How mainstream should we be thinking?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_trio ? (there's a list below the article, but it's very short)

also, The Presidents Of The USA are a rock trio

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 19:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe "Sex and Candy", "Closing Time" or "The Way"?

Tape Store (Tape Store), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 19:17 (seventeen years ago) link

not totally mainstream.. no nirvana or anything.. but i was in highschool when i heard them so they can't be that obscure either.

i think they may have had a few minor hits. i heard the song via mp3 most likely, so i don't know how widespread the airplay was.

i'm located in ontario canada, but i dont recall them being specifically regional to the area, or even canada, though i can't exclude it.

nothing pops out at me from that wikipedia article. i might be totally wrong on the trio thing.. the 3/4 thing im more sure of.. thats what prompted this.

also note that i was into stuff like nine inch nails and white zombie when i was younger, so it probably spoke somewhat to those tastes.

astroblaster (astroblaster), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 19:17 (seventeen years ago) link

it was quite aggresive. tempo was a fair speed

astroblaster (astroblaster), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 19:21 (seventeen years ago) link

it's definitly not sex and candy or closing time.. but probably around the same time period

what's "the way" ?

can anyone help me remember this alterna-rock 90s band i'm trying to think of (it may even be the same band astroblaster is thinking of). i think they had something to do w/the smashing pumpkins. i believe d'arcy mighta sang on a song or one of the members of SP produced it. and the chorus had a word that at the time (in highschool) i had to look up to figure out what it meant. i can't remember said word, but i feel like it meant something like being content. and i think there were robots in the video.

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 21:33 (seventeen years ago) link

catherine was a band with d'arcy singing one song, at least. they had a good video, from what I remember.

"copacetic" was by a band called Local H, and might be the song in question in this thread

i think they were more one hit wondery... maybe 2 mediocre albums all together

Sounds like a dead ringer for (and someone mentioned the band above) "Seeing Red" by Chevelle if you ask me. Especially if you would have said 'Tool-lite' to describe the song.

Seriously though, check that song out, it just might be the one.

I FUCKING HAVE IT

it came to me all of a sudden on the drive home from work. let me tell you guys. i can finally sleep.

because this thread was so much fun, i wont reveal right away, and instead allow for one more round of guesses, with all new clues, based on facts and not my apparently ridiculous memory.

1. They are canadian
2. the song had a video (probably never saw mtv though, only muchmusic)
3. the verses have some nine inch nailsy synths and 3/4 drums, then guitars come in for prechorus and chorus, male vocals, looks like a 4 piece in the video.
4. the narrowed down year is 2001
5. i can't find them on allmusic.com, so i guess that makes them obscure, in an underfunded canadian band from 6 years ago sorta way
6. seems they did have major canadian label support though

actually now that i think about it i did pretty good on remembering shit about this track.. not too many of my clues were hugely off.

anyway, i leave this open for a little bit, then i'll dissappoint you with actually revealing the track.. cuz its really not mindshatteringly awesome.. just fucking fantastic for me because of the nostalgia and what not..
