good speakers to use with pc/laptop

what say ye ILM? I'm not sure what the best idea on this is, do people just buy the same kind of speakers for a computer as they would for anything else? I hear some of the PC speaker sets are crappy for music, ideally I want speakers that have good bass and are good for listening to music I might use for DJing and also perhaps for making music.....

and they are good for listening to music. especially digital/electronic stuff.

but if you are making music, you might need something more heavy duty. maybe.

even crap-quality live footage of reinhard voigt sounds cool on my speakers:

those are the exact same ones i'm using with my laptop right now, actually! they could be more portable (i'm assuming that's a factor, and these take up more room than my laptop itself), but all in all i like them just fine

the cool thing for me about getting speakers that sound good - and a new computer! - is that i search stuff out that i never ever listen to just cuz it sounds really cool. like idm from chile on youtube. or setting up a pandora station to play dance stuff i would never hear otherwise.

Just hooked up some Bose Companion 2s...pretty nice. $68 at your local big box store, if you're a member of one.

THESE RIGHT HERE. They are good. EVERYTHING SOUNDS GREAT ON THEM. And cheap for Bose shit!

I just received the Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks II as a gift, which will replace the 20 watt Panasonics I have at the office. A friend had them when they first came out in an Apple only version in 2000, and they really filled the room (20 watt subwoofer, 10 watt speakers), much more so than the Bose. However, the Bose probably are good for that price point. I think they've found their consumer electronics niche, since their ridiculously overpriced, crappy sounding Lifestyle systems served as the punching bag for audiophiles for so many years.

I haven't set them up yet -- my one concern is whether I can adjust the bass level so as to not disturb others at a low volume. But after 5:00 when the cleaning lady comes round with the vacuum, I'm free to crank it, woo hoo!

I meant to mention, while they are pretty, the sound probably doesn't justify a $170 tag. Last year I saw it for under $100 in many places. A quick search showed the lowest price at about $122 not counting eBay. Don't usually see consumer electronics go up in price after a year, hrm.

these look good...

I've done quiiite a bit of research on this and I narrowed it down to Logitech Z-3's. My RA had them and they were brilliant and I think you'd like them.

Search hydrogenaudio.org and head-fi forums for stuff; they always help.

Here's what I'd get if I were going to upgrade:

Wow, 50W subwoofer, 14W per channel Klipsch. That's definitely the best I've seen for $110. More power than necessary for the office, but for those who don't have a decent home system to just plug into, this would be a good option.
