KILLED BY DEATH comps

hey dudes,

so after sorta eyeing them for a few months i finally picked up some killed by death comps (1, 2 and 4) and they are all mucho rad. any others in the series or other titles that cover similar ground i should be on the lookout for?

FWIW i can't get enough of the hardcore stuff but my absolute fave songs are usually along the lines of the nervous eaters' "just head" and the users' "sick of you" - y'know, overamped snarly guitar stuff with recognizably rocking intent and catchy riffs.

opinions/suggestions appreciated.

Yeah! Fucking KBD comps. Where the hell have you guys been on ILM anyway?

Where HAVE YOU BEEN?

Bimbler (Sourkraut), Sunday, 24 December 2006 07:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Get 3 & 5 RIGHT NOW. The 1st 5 are the best, after that there is some drop off in quality - 6, 7, 8.5, 9 and 10 are all great too but the vinyl pressing of 7 I have is really badly made - it sounds terrible on side 1 and I have to adjust the arm to stop the needle skating, so I'd get the CD if you can find it.

I have quite a few later ones and there's usually a few great songs on each but they're much less consistent - 999, 1234, FU2 and 24 are all alright though.

If that's not enough snotty punk rock for you (there will never be enough for me I don't think!) try these:

Bloodstains series:
Texas
Midwest
Australia
(these are unfortunately the hardest to find, and they're the best I've heard)
UK #1

Back To Front series
Break The Rules series
Hyped 2 Death series

all the same kind of thing.

Also don't forget Killed By 7 Inch, but they're a bit considering there's only 4 songs on them. You can get 1-5 compiled on an LP, which I'd also recommend.

BTW if you haven't already you should really get Crime - San Francisco's Still Doomed. And Shit Street by the Pagans.

Also if you like the Users, get the Raw Records Punk Singles Collection CD on Anagram.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 24 December 2006 13:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Colonel Poo massively OTM, I'd also like to recommend Bloodstains Across Sweden or any Rude Kids records.

sleeve (sleeve), Sunday, 24 December 2006 17:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Rude Kids seconded. Just mental. Surprised they haven't been given a deluxe rerelease.

Soukesian (Soukesian), Sunday, 24 December 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Can't say much more than has been said.. first 4 KBD are classic; I don't know the 5th. Also, Bloodstains Across the Midwest = lifechanging.

Other good comps in a similar vein:
Deep in The Throat of Texas
What? Stuff

Also, yeah, Pagan's Shit Street is one of the best things ever. I SEEN IT IN BOOKS, I READ IT ON TEEVEEE, BUT IT DON'T MEAN ANYTHING TO ME.

the two Murder Punk comps are aussie KBD stuff. sound isn't fantastic but the songs are tremendous

electric sound of jim (electric sound of jim), Sunday, 24 December 2006 21:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Definitely have to check Murder Punk. As far as OZ punk/garage goes, I already have "Do the pop" and one with a generic title like 'sounds from the underground' which isn't to hand. These aren't strictly KBD as they also cover 80's garage revival stuff but it's absolute mayhem all the way. Was it something in the beer back then?

Soukesian (Soukesian), Sunday, 24 December 2006 22:13 (seventeen years ago) link

i think so! those two comps are excellent, and there's now a second volume of the 'australian underground' set. in a less punk and more post-punk vein, there's also "can't stop it" and "inner city sound"

electric sound of jim (electric sound of jim), Sunday, 24 December 2006 22:21 (seventeen years ago) link

(although those two are more for a messthetics fan than a KBD one)

electric sound of jim (electric sound of jim), Sunday, 24 December 2006 22:43 (seventeen years ago) link

also the killed by death "british DIY" volume is pretty rad. with the paste-on cover.

ian (orion), Sunday, 24 December 2006 22:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Any of you guys get the Killed by Hardcore volumes? I think there were two. Tony Rettman reviewed the first one for Blastitude and said it was awesome.

Oz Xpost: Woaahh . . "Inner City Sound" looks amazing, and right up my street. A track by the Sacred Cowboys, no less. Virgin in Edinburgh had an import copy of their LP at about three times the price of a domestic release, when I was a madmental Birthday Party fanatic. I used to go in after signing on, look at it, and put it back on the shelf. Probably the right thing to do at the time, but I still have to hear them.

Great Aussie comp I did shell out for back then was 'No worries', loads of cool Citadel stuff.

Soukesian (Soukesian), Sunday, 24 December 2006 22:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Murder Punk is great yeah - also check out AK79 (reissued by Flying Nun) which is all NZ stuff.

There are 3 Killed By Hardcores that I know of, I only have #1 but that one kicks ass.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 24 December 2006 23:43 (seventeen years ago) link

i have killed by hardcore ("yuppie edition") #1 on cd, fucking great stuff.

GAWD PVNCH (yournullfame), Monday, 25 December 2006 00:26 (seventeen years ago) link

so is there a "can't stop it vol. 2" out now? anyone heard it?

GAWD PVNCH (yournullfame), Monday, 25 December 2006 01:21 (seventeen years ago) link

isn't out yet, i can't remember what's holding it up.. but it can't be far away now

awesome! "do that dance" and "can't stop it" were such a bizarre omission from the first PC cd.

Anyone know the Prats? Fantastic Scottish post punk DIY, and these guys were so young, they had to have their parents drive them to their gigs! John Peel loved 'em. As he should.

CD compilation of their work available on One Little Indian, but the Peel Sessions seem to be missing in action.

They got kindof gloomy and doomy as well as they got a bit older. "die todten reyten schnell"

"General Davis" was featured in Jonathan Demme's Manchurian Candidate film.

Bimbler (Sourkraut), Monday, 25 December 2006 21:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh yeah I know the Prats, I'm not sure they really fit in with this stuff as they're more the Messthetics/DIY style, but yeah I have that compilation CD and the Earcom compilation they first appeared on.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 25 December 2006 22:21 (seventeen years ago) link

aw man, thanks for all the recommendations dudes! i'll check out a bunch of this stuff - also i have and love the crime disc but definitely need to pick up that pagans record as well - is shit street noticeably better than the pink album? i don't have either but i've always been curious.

1/2 paleontologist 1/2 basketball player (teenagequiet), Monday, 25 December 2006 22:40 (seventeen years ago) link

they're both rather essential, but start with shit street cuz it's got "what's this shit called love" and "eyes of satan" on it!

ian (orion), Monday, 25 December 2006 23:17 (seventeen years ago) link

yah, get them both!

scott seward (121212), Monday, 25 December 2006 23:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I got the Everybody Hates You CD a few years before those 2 came out but I can't get enough Pagans so I've since picked up Pink Album Plus and intend to get Shit Street at some point. Everybody Hates You has most of it already, but whatever.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 25 December 2006 23:45 (seventeen years ago) link

But yeah srsly get Shit Street first, What's This Shit Called Love is one of the best songs ever released ever.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 25 December 2006 23:48 (seventeen years ago) link

The UK DIY volume was 9 I think? Pretty great precurser to the Messthetics series. The big pre-Messthetics boots were the Instant Pop Classics boots, 2 volumes, a third was announced but never arrived...Desperate Bicycles, The Fakes, Weekend, They Must Be Russians, Versatile Newts etc.

dan selzer (dan selzer), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 15:40 (seventeen years ago) link

No, #9 is all-American.

The British DIY was numbered #1 as the numbers had got all silly by that time so they couldn't be bothered to work out what the next one should be and started over!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I just got the International Discography of The New Wave Vol. 1982-83 in the post today. Apparently it goes for a lot of money now but I got it for a very reasonable price. I'm just amazed at what those people who put it together managed to accomplish without even the kind of computer help we now take for granted. ESOJ, I think I'm going to check out those Aussie post-punk comps...I've honestly studied the British side of things for so long now I think it's really time for me to move on.

I'll try the Pagans, too, what the hell.

Bimbler (Sourkraut), Thursday, 28 December 2006 02:14 (seventeen years ago) link

What's This Shit Called Love is one of the best songs ever released ever.

i've only heard the meatmen cover

amon (amon), Thursday, 28 December 2006 07:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I just want to lavish praise on KBD #5 again:

Black Easter-What the Fuck
Nubs-Job
X-Terminators-Microwave Radiation
Molls-White Stains
Stalin-Romanchisuto
Dieter Meier-Cry for Fame
Maggots-(Lets Get, Lets Get) Tammy Wynette
Cowboys-Teenage Life
Hubble Bubble-Look Around
Neo Punkz-If I Watch TV
Shitdogs-Reborn
RPA-Shoot the Pope
Teddy & the Frat Girls-Clubnite
Annonymous-Corporate Radio
Riot 303-Drugs
Cracked Actor-Nazi School
Stiphnoyds-Afraid of the Russians
Kids-No Monarchy
Hubble Bubble-Sweet Rot

This is probably my favourite of all of them. I don't think there's a bad song on it. I've since managed to track down the original Black Easter and Teddy & the Frat Girls singles, but as with most KBD stuff the rest is just too expensive!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 10:58 (seventeen years ago) link

On that tip, the Auto Glamour Sound comp that came out recently is cool, still digesting it though.

The Dieter Meier single is amazing, I got both sides off a blog.

dan selzer (dan selzer), Thursday, 28 December 2006 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah Auto Glamour Sound is a cool comp too, my favourite (new to me) band on it is Eleven Thousand Switches.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I think that Maggots single (or one Maggots single, at any rate) just got reissued/booted.

ian (orion), Thursday, 28 December 2006 15:55 (seventeen years ago) link

just remembered: another comp to check out is Cleveland Confidential.

ian (orion), Thursday, 28 December 2006 15:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah it was that Maggots single. With a couple of extra tracks. Haven't heard it yet.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:02 (seventeen years ago) link

oh man Cleveland Confidential has that unbelievable Womanhaters tune "Cry 815" or whatever, kind of an ultra-nasty slowed down version of the Pagans tune. Plus the Defnics! Great comp.

Also a note that I was very disappointed in Bloodstains Across Australia. Murder Punk comps are ten times better.

There was also an LP released before the KBD series came out called "Feel Lucky Punk" that had a buncha Aussie stuff and other goodies of this sort, also excellent.

sleeve (sleeve), Thursday, 28 December 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Defnics were awesome yeah. "51%" is on Killed By Death #6 - is it the same song on Cleveland Confidential? I don't actually know that comp.
