mr fingers-what about this love (unbelievable record....)
all ten city
romanthony-let me show you love

also it's not quite right for this thread but if you're on a chicago style at the moment I always have to recommend jungle wonz's "bird in a guilded cage", or "the jungle", both of which I love.

i was gonna suggest "promised land", but these "early house: s/d?" questions are SO MUCH more easily answered by recommending comps!!

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 23 December 2006 04:13 (seventeen years ago) link

"reach out for the love" by members of the house?

friday on the porch (lfam), Saturday, 23 December 2006 05:09 (seventeen years ago) link

who made that into a question?

friday on the porch (lfam), Saturday, 23 December 2006 05:09 (seventeen years ago) link

"Promised Land" is an absolute must. Also "Move Your Body." Actually in keeping with Vahid's comp recommends, this one is easy to find, (too) succinct (but good as a starting point), and the tracks are across the board essential:

argh, i always do that.

here are two more, but they are more 90s/00s.

round two - "new day". or following the big v's lead, get this excellent comp.

larry heard's "on the bridge" remixes - glowing glisses

josh (josh.), Saturday, 23 December 2006 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

And if we're going to mention the last twop we may as well include Chelonis R Jones and Prosumer as well.

Tim F (Tim F), Saturday, 23 December 2006 23:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I know I always say this but...Your Love is Jamie Principle, just mispelled as "Jamie Principal"...

friday on the porch (lfam), Sunday, 24 December 2006 04:58 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, if you are willing to move to the 90s, round one and round two are a must, beautifully produced vocal house by basic channel with andy caine. plus, round one has a mindblowing remix by trent and chez and round two has some lovely bongos. i think it was jd stirmonster who said that round two got him through a shattered smashed broken heart and these two records definitely have that power...

they will save your life

friday on the porch (lfam), Sunday, 24 December 2006 05:01 (seventeen years ago) link

i feel like a lot of the production of the early gay diva-dude vocal house is sort of flippant and it doesn't match with the vocals but of course basic channel is not flippant, those songs are amazing, perfect tracks

friday on the porch (lfam), Sunday, 24 December 2006 05:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I love the seriousness of the gay diva vibes on Round One and Round Two and "Moved" (which is a total Round Two tribute) - feels like an advancement or extension from the widescreen drama of "Your Love".

Basically stuff which bridges the gap between the music listed in this thread and the music I was talking about on the Spooky Deep House thread.

Not in the same boat, but we're remiss in not having mentioned "You Don't Know Me" and "Flowerz" yet.

Tim F (Tim F), Sunday, 24 December 2006 05:12 (seventeen years ago) link

wait, what is moved? it's not googleable

friday on the porch (lfam), Sunday, 24 December 2006 05:15 (seventeen years ago) link

and you are otm with the 'your love' comparison, they have very similar vibes

friday on the porch (lfam), Sunday, 24 December 2006 05:16 (seventeen years ago) link

of course, some of the early diva-dudes were right in tune with their producers, like pandy and farley on 'love can't turn around.' is it really about buttsex? never knew all those times dancing to it. now i will dance with an even bigger smile.

friday on the porch (lfam), Sunday, 24 December 2006 05:22 (seventeen years ago) link

i guess the lyrics are pretty vague. although i guess all early house is about sex of some sort.

friday on the porch (lfam), Sunday, 24 December 2006 05:23 (seventeen years ago) link

now, what else can i guess?

friday on the porch (lfam), Sunday, 24 December 2006 05:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Sebo K ft. Prosumer - "Moved".

Check out as well Prosumer's "The Craze".

friday on the porch (lfam), Sunday, 24 December 2006 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Have you even heard those tracks blunt? They're very housey. As housey as Mark Bell's "Woman Cry", say.

Tim F (Tim F), Sunday, 24 December 2006 22:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Have not heard any of those. Mark Bell of LFO?

blunt (blunt), Sunday, 24 December 2006 23:23 (seventeen years ago) link

No, Mark Bell the deep house singer/producer. You haven't heard "Woman Cry" Blunt? I would think you would love it.

Tim F (Tim F), Sunday, 24 December 2006 23:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Also records as Blakkat and as part of Shaboom.

Tim F (Tim F), Sunday, 24 December 2006 23:44 (seventeen years ago) link

OK heard the others, so Prosumer = light, by-the-book retro-acidy house w/weak(ly generic) vocals & Sebo K forgot to add music to his admittedly housey rhythm track. Or it's a dub that doesn't say it's name, either way not much happens that we haven't got already from 10 diff. producers.

Ah Blakkat, not too subtle but sometimes efficient. I think I have one and it sure ain't deep house. Will search...

i'm not sure i've heard of this maurizio you bring up, is that some obscure gay diva-dude early house vocal stuff?? is it some cosmic italian slomo disco? is it some totally avantgarde underground experimental house stuff??

Oooh, that would be.. #3 but 10 years ago.

blunt (blunt), Monday, 25 December 2006 01:01 (seventeen years ago) link

"Maurizio M series >>>>>>>>>>>> 5 records I am too lazy to find >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Laid "Punch Up" >>>>>>>>>>> about 5 more > Sebo K"

Yeah it's a shame he can't be more like Frankie Feliciano or something.

Tim F (Tim F), Monday, 25 December 2006 07:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Well at least I remind you of someone now. Maurizio? Nothing, but still more related to this thread than Sebo K/Prosumer.

"Maurizio? Nothing, but still more related to this thread than Sebo K/Prosumer."

!!! Whatevs blunt.

Tim F (Tim F), Monday, 25 December 2006 23:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Probably too recent for some, but Markus Gardeweg's "25 Years" has an awesomely camp falsetto male diva vocal, halfway between "Love Can't Turn Around" and "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real".

Tim F (Tim F), Monday, 25 December 2006 23:39 (seventeen years ago) link

a few comps I would recommend are:

Paradisco 3000 - Chicago Boogie
http://www.discogs.com/release/268429

I cannot vouch for the cd, I only have the last three 12"s. I passed on the first because I have most of it on other records. Nice stuff with good euro pressings, something you will not necessarily get with the original pressings.

House Hallucinates
http://www.discogs.com/release/73358

This is more on the jackin Trax tip but it has a lot of nice stuff on it. I think I have the American version of this record. The track listing is identical but there is no mention of London on the cover. The pressing is a little dodgy because they are LP's and they were cut
without the bass that you would find on 12" versions of the same tunes. A good intro, but most of it is in print or relatively easy to find 2nd hand.

DJ Deep Presents City To City Part 2
http://www.discogs.com/release/700136

This comp is completely bananas. The Romananthony track is worth the price alone.

Underground Dance Music Vol. 1
http://www.discogs.com/release/699992

This is more on the NYC tip but if you are interested in older house music you will dig this in a big way.

Another thing you might want to look into is the Downtown 161 repressings that have been floating around lately.

These are some of the better comps I have come across this year.

that DJ Deep comp is amazing...and yeah "Bring U Up" is unbelievable.

There's a CD mix of that too that's really good, some of it is really weird underground stuff I'd never heard before, sounds really seedy, great comp.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 12:52 (seventeen years ago) link

That's the only prob with this comp, the purposeful inclusion of some tracks that had remained obscure for a reason (they suck). But that's French distinction for you. Then again it might veer far enough into beardo territory to find an audience there.

blunt (blunt), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 13:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Jestofunk - I'm Gonna Love You

blunt (blunt), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 14:10 (seventeen years ago) link

And for more recent recent gay diva-dude-ism Roland Clark is your man, so to speak.

blunt (blunt), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 14:19 (seventeen years ago) link

"that DJ Deep comp is amazing...and yeah "Bring U Up" is unbelievable."

I'd been holding off on getting this because I didn't click with DJ Deep's Respect To DJ Deep comp from about 5 years ago, but it does look great.

The entire R.Hide In Plain Sight album is underrated I think - I listened to it again recently and realised that I love pretty much every track.

"And for more recent recent gay diva-dude-ism Roland Clark is your man, so to speak."

Yes, does anyone reckon he's ever topped "Flowerz" though? For a while in the early 00s I patiently checked out every single collab-o he did, but was always slightly underwhelmed.

Aaron Carl isn't really diva-ish enough for this thread is he.

Tim F (Tim F), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 14:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Roland Clarke has been delivering teh goods. "I Get Deep", "Speak To Me" and the most recent "Sunshine", a tearjerker with v. clever percussion.

blunt (blunt), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 14:32 (seventeen years ago) link

...by one Ron Trent. Also, Roland Clark = Urban Soul = GDD heaven ("Happy").

blunt (blunt), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

the purposeful inclusion of some tracks that had remained obscure for a reason (they suck)

I disagree, I thought some were good, especially for people who've heard the canonical hits on comp after comp....

His Tears 12" on Subject Detroit is one of the better records of the year. Definitely worth hunting down a copy.

His hardlife remix is still one of my favorite Detroit records of all time.
