Everything is fucked. What's next, a bunch of educated 20 sommethings playing with chains of guitar pedals in the basements of east coast book stores?

real quick on the uptake, bub. who do you think was singing for the germs on their reunion gigs?

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Thursday, 21 December 2006 22:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Without the most important member of the group, I wouldn't call it a reunion.

Ian Astbury?

Bobby Gillespie?

I know all them original dudez n dudettes were involved but how can this be anything other than yr standard shitty musician biopic (troubled artist's sensitive youth > establish key relationships > big break > montage of "success" > ruined by drugs n fame > martyr THE END *snorrrreeezzzzzzzz*)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 December 2006 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost - naw not really, i'm just trying to kill my last 20 minutes before going on vacation.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Thursday, 21 December 2006 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Id' rather see a good documentary on early LA punk than some lame, generic, Hollywood paint by numbers bio-pic. Just finished reading "We Got the Neutron Bomb" and believe me there are many stories to tell from the inspirational to the sordid. Plus it's always fun to hear old punks bitch about each other and get nostalgic for the "good old days." Besides where else are you going to get Black Randy the Man, the Myth, and the Legend! Now that would be aces.

like "the decline of western civilization, part one"????!?

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Thursday, 21 December 2006 23:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, that's good, but I want something more comprehensive than "The Decline of Western Civilization." I want to see a documentary that highlights seminal bands like the Weirdo, X, or the Screamers. Bands left out of Spheeris's film because they didn't fit her preconceptions of what LA punk was. Several people interviewed in “We Got the Neutron Bomb" felt that Spheeris manipulated or mis-represented them. It could just be sour grapes, regrets, or attempts to re-write the past, but more than a few people say she often filmed Darby in his worst most totally fucked-up moments.

Ice Ice Cream Baby (The Dirty Vicar), Friday, 22 December 2006 00:15 (seventeen years ago) link

X were in Decline. Wasn't that were the famous "throat cancer port" story was told?

nickn (nickn), Friday, 22 December 2006 00:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I forgot about X being in there. Didn't they come off looking/sounding rather tired or was that the Urgh video. It's been years since I saw or listened to either. Come to think of it every video I've ever seen of X disappoints me. Live Exene's and Doe's vocals grate on my ears. I've always loved them on record though.

Ice Ice Cream Baby (The Dirty Vicar), Friday, 22 December 2006 00:39 (seventeen years ago) link

X are awesome in Decline. You must be thinking of Urgh (forgot they were in that, only one song IIRC). There's also an extended interview where Billy Zoom comes off better than almost anybody else in the film except Dukowski.

It's questionable how 'Hollywood' the film is being that it was shot at least 2 years ago and no one will show it.

i bought a copy of decline vol. 1 today thinking it was the dvd rerelease but it seems like a bootleg, ripped from vhs and plays kinda glitchy (in my admittedly crappy dvd player) :------------(

i bought a boot of decline part 1 at a yard sale in williamsburg over a year ago, only it only had the germs part, then cut into some old 70s porn. probably better than the original, that way!

we carry dvd boot of Decline vol. 1 @ work. i will have to take it home and watch it sometimes; haven't seen it ince i saw a crappy nth generation VHS dub sometime freshman year of high school.

ian (orion), Sunday, 24 December 2006 22:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Why is Decline 1 so hard to find? Spheeris is (sort of) a name director, the bands featured really aren't in a postion to hold out for big bucks, and it's a significant historic document by this point.
