sandbox nu-disco and beardo thread

the old beardo thread was my favourite, this is long overdue. some neu things:

'all woman' by kathy diamond, produced by maurice fulton, on that permanent vacation label who did the mix of the same name and the antena reissue. SO GOOD. vahid u will love this. I wonder if MF will do her whole album.

reverso 68's pete herbert covers cratedigger fave flash and the pan, gets idjuts to remix. this would appear to push all the right buttons in theory but I gave it a whirl and it didn't really do much for me.

faze action have gone disco again.

also that glimmers fabric mix was really good, I thought. OK have at it.

haitch (not haitch) (haitch), Thursday, 21 December 2006 14:29 (seventeen years ago) link

actually I'll throw in a question as well on the space-disco side of things: where does this sound go from here? there's a new goat dance 12" out too and I listened to it and even though the last one was one of my fave things for the whole year, the new one seemed a bit samey, or lacking in personality or something. does it try to switch the percussion tricks around and go off, say, on a latin tip a la maurice fulton maybe? does that take the 'disco' part too much out of the equation?

perhaps it's just more people mining the vein than '05 when it was 'I feel space' and 'signal failure' and not much else, and they're not doing it as well. lindstrom and padded cell's best work have still been pretty top-shelf this year.

figuring out "where does the sound go from here" = perennial fools errand, right?

i'm not sure if i buy your reasoning here, though: there's a new goat dance 12" out too and I listened to it and even though the last one was one of my fave things for the whole year, the new one seemed a bit samey, or lacking in personality or something

samey? lacking in personality? CHICKEN LIPS? nooooo ... i mean, i love me some chicken lips but let's just say they're remarkably ... consistent producers.

anyway, who knows. the current hipster craze is "cosmic" disco a la beppe loda. the current non-hipster craze is ame, henrik schwarz, innervisions, compost black label, fourtet, etc

maybe w/ the interest in low and slow instrumentals, the unearthing of arthur russell's more instrumental jams, and the timeless cachet of proggy jazz fusion jams and larry heard type keyboard tinkling everything will swing in an "on the corner" / pharoah sanders referencing cosmic deep jazz house direction.

i dunno, i'm just daydreaming now. but a whole subgenre of stuff referencing patrick pulsinger's "claire" and the rest of the mo'wax excursions movement would be pretty hip (isn't that what stuff like trickski and cobblestone jazz are anyway? is that beardo? or just really wigged out??)

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 21 December 2006 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

beardo in the sense of denim vests, corduroy pants and beaded headbands seems more played out than anything, though. no more bumrocks-style bum rock. no more todd terje edits. we "get" it, thanks.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 21 December 2006 16:42 (seventeen years ago) link

you get the Bumrocks 7" yet?

dan selzer (dan selzer), Thursday, 21 December 2006 17:00 (seventeen years ago) link

cosmic deep jazz house sounds good, except if they try to copy those 'black satin' handclaps. have you ever tried to listen to that track on headphones? I fell over at the train station once while trying to listen to it. shit throws you off balance.

haitch (not haitch) (haitch), Thursday, 21 December 2006 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

thank youse but no thank youse

map of africa = crap of africa, i've decided.

sorry, but WEWW is only 50% good and usually only when they're doing downtempo instead of rock.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 21 December 2006 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

not so much nu-disco as just straight up disco but I really love Escort's "Starlight"

other than that, haven't heard much new in this vein lately ...

dmr (dmr), Thursday, 21 December 2006 17:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I wanna know if there is any new stuff by Lee Douglas in the works. One of my favorites over the past year has been Same Changes and hearing "Our Song (Exclusive Extended Mix 1999)" off of Lovefingers back a bit makes me even more interested. Someone tell me there is something new going on with this fella.

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 21 December 2006 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

not so much nu-nu-disco as old-nu-disco but i took a real nap on the lindstrom and prins thomas album. so LUSH. on headphones those pianos are practically orgasmic. and whoever (jaxon?) said it was really probably a post-rock record was right on. it sounds very (weirdly) tortoise-y to me in places.

Record fair at Sónar this year. Taken by a friend, unfortunately I didn't see it personally.

jim (jim), Thursday, 21 December 2006 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I like most of what bumrocks has posted, though I haven't thought of the selection as forming a genre or fad. He's had S.O.S Band, Les Love and The Love Kids, and Love Unlimited Orchestra.....

Does Escort have an album out or coming out? Starlight was my favorite single of the past year.

jacob sanders (Jacobs), Thursday, 21 December 2006 21:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I love how Escort is listed on AMG with only two "Influenced By" references: Skyy and Shalamar.

f. scott baio (natepatrin), Thursday, 21 December 2006 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

And the Lindstrom/Prins record is great -- right now I'm listening to "Boney M Down" and I love how it sounds kind of like King Sunny Ade playing on a Hall & Oates instrumental.

f. scott baio (natepatrin), Thursday, 21 December 2006 21:38 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah i majorly came around to the L&PT this year, too. when i first got it i was like "oh yeah, this just sounds like fila brazillia" but then i recently listened to it and thought it was waaaaay better than "a feedelity affair".

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 21 December 2006 21:42 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah i've heard hall and oates, joe jackson, steely dan, and more in the l&pt record. it's like a metro area lp that replaces italo and new order with late 70s/early 80s soft rock/funk.

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Thursday, 21 December 2006 22:01 (seventeen years ago) link

well l&pt DO sound just like fila

fila deserves some cred

this is cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 21 December 2006 22:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Escort have a second single out.

The Bumrocks single isn't original music, just 2 cuts on a 7".

dan selzer (dan selzer), Thursday, 21 December 2006 23:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I love how Escort is listed on AMG with only two "Influenced By" references: Skyy and Shalamar.

Unfortunately a very low-priority, self-appointed non-task done with roughly a second's thought. Better that than nothing at all.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 21 December 2006 23:11 (seventeen years ago) link

"Boney M Down" sounds a bit too much like 90's Pink Floyd for me.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 21 December 2006 23:13 (seventeen years ago) link

and we return the the very premise of the original thread

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 22 December 2006 00:02 (seventeen years ago) link

haitch (not haitch) (haitch), Friday, 22 December 2006 02:37 (seventeen years ago) link

liking the kathy diamond record. better than the first one.

what about the "new" black devil disco club? its growing on me.

grady (grady), Friday, 22 December 2006 02:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Saying the Lindstrom and Prins Thomas album is post rock oversimplifies the music. The album doesn't take itself as serious as most post rock group do. I definitely hear what jess said afterward about soft rock in thier music, though I think there is still italo as well. It is just a different italo than Metro Area's.

jacob sanders (Jacobs), Friday, 22 December 2006 03:09 (seventeen years ago) link

The Lindstrom and Prins Thomas song called 'Run' reminds me of 'Hold On To Your Dreams' from "Snake Charmer" by Jah Wobble, the Edge, and Holger Czukay.

jacob sanders (Jacobs), Friday, 22 December 2006 03:13 (seventeen years ago) link

PLUG: I had one of my tracks posted on Bumrocks this past week. I think it's still up there (AJG4). Such illustrious company.

And, yeah, I can't wait for new Lee Douglas and Escort stuff myself!

Jay Vee (Jay Vee), Friday, 22 December 2006 03:56 (seventeen years ago) link

jacob otm, both times...

the kathy diamond record didn't blow me away, but MF's Alice Smith is currently destroying my ipod on a daily basis. the vocal crescendo in the middle is orgasmic. love it!

dovetailing with that for top spot lately is the dfa remix of timberlake's 'my love'. it strikes me as fitting in perfectly with the kind of singer JT styles himself as in a live setting

i dunno if i agree with vahid about the l&pt album being better than 'feedelity affair', because i have a serious boner for both of those records. 'l&pt' doesn't have any of those absolutely killer jams from 'affair' -- 'original whities', 'i feel space', 'music in my mind'...actually there is not a dud track on the whole thing. plus i managed to collect all the singles bit by bit and so while i do think they hang together well as a collection, it hasn't hit me with the same immediate impact as the l&pt album did, listening from start to finish as an album.

still, has anyone actually bought 'affair' and read the liner notes? i kinda want to see that film RIGHT NOW...

mikebee (bizzle), Friday, 22 December 2006 03:58 (seventeen years ago) link

i've recently come around to the L&PT album in a big way, too. it's kinda been my holiday music this year. "music in my mind" from the solo album has also been on repeat.

josh (josh.), Friday, 22 December 2006 03:58 (seventeen years ago) link

my last post was a really weird double xpost.

i've been meaning to talk about those liner notes on ILM because they are indeed fantastic! they really enhance the album for me because i thought the movie was unforgettable and has a very similar palette/tone/theme yet i never would have thought to assoicate the two.

josh (josh.), Friday, 22 December 2006 04:13 (seventeen years ago) link

both album and movie are period pieces that self-consciously use the past to get to the future.

i completely take back what i said about that Kathy Diamond record -- it's freaking awesome. i rejected this back in december and have had to wait until now to get my hands on one. i blame the crappy speakers at work where i listen to new records.

my smylonnylon story...

ILXer Lauren P took me to the Center for the Dull looking for Freezie Freekie (look it up) and they were playing this crazy music, everything was at the wrong speed but I can tell it was some weird disco and some crazy german new wave. This was also around 99. They had tapes for sale but I didn't get any. Only years later during press for more recent In Flagranti releases did it all come together. Dude was on the Cosmic tip WAY before most of NY.

dan selzer (dan selzer), Friday, 16 February 2007 05:05 (seventeen years ago) link

isn't that second link confounded's site?

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 16 February 2007 18:45 (seventeen years ago) link

5 and 6 of Vertical Tones are awesome. Vincent Markowski's remix is a sick latin/broken take on the Machine template, and Rimramramrim (iirc) from the album is one of my favorite tracks, can't wait to play this out. i noticed both of these tracks appeared in Chateau Flight's Resident Advisor mix for this month...

also, on the DC tip, a new Padded Cell single is on its way -- 'Moon Menace'. It's definitely stands up alongside the others quality-wise.

Arthur Russell instrumental jams? Is this really an unearthing? I mean, Russell is great, but it's not like it's all been hidden from our view for ages or something.
