My Not a Pitchfork Thread Thread

May have been mentioned before, but what the hell... It's kinda funny, and the mag's a good read no matter what:

Tom Lax (Siltbreeze Records): With Times New Viking I sent out a bunch of radio promos, a few print ones - mostly online stuff - the response was great. I did send one to Pitchfork for review and after a while I e-mailed to ask if they got it. In response I got an e-mail asking me if I'd like to advertise. I didn't and it never got reviewed. So the more things change, the more they stay the same, don't you think?

Scott Soriano (for Terminal Boredom magazine): HA! Same thing happened to me with Pitchfork and the A Frames.

Terminal Boredom article from issue #14, w/ a v. useful Siltbreeze discog.:

I don't know that I've ever received an e-mail from either of those guys. Perhaps they e-mailed the business dept. to follow up? It's useless for me to even speculate. In any event, there's no relationship between ads and reviews, despite the dozens of "hey, we might advertise, can we please have a review" e-mails that I get. Hell, I don't even know who is advertising with us unless I happen to notice their ad on the site. (And we have reviewed the A Frames.)

If either Tom or Scott happen across this thread, they can feel free to use my e-mail address to contact the Pitchfork editorial dept. about any review or feature concerns or questions they may ever have. (Hell, that goes for any label/artist/pr person.)

I can say that "Buy an ad" is a pretty frequent reply to people who demand coverage of their bullshit at both the magazine I work for and the newspaper that I edit for. With the magazine, the demands are even worse. It's like no one realizes that since we're a monthly, we actually plan everything, you know, over a month in advance. It's not that we hate your band, dude...

I don't know that I've ever received an e-mail from either of those guys.

don't mean to come across personally defensive, or deflect potential blame: Bottom line is that I don't know the specifics of either of these guys' experiences with Pitchfork but the underlining insinuation is completely untrue.

Do the folks at Pitchfork Central where American Apparel? I'm pretty sure they do, wink wink nudge nudge.

Or even WEAR American Apparel.

Um, do you even need to ask that one?

Considering a good number of bands in their demo (marketing speak!) print their shirts on said company's stock, I'd say it's almost a certainty.

I kinda have the whole pitchfork sucks idea going on but at the same time I didn't really know anything about anything until I started reading pitchfork. I mean, when you just have the NME and MTV2 to go on you are lucky to have any music taste at all. The end of year lists and top 100s of the decade and such have kind of built my current music collection.

lol @ Pitchfork's fact checking.

If the new Björk album does end up being called "Totempole" it'll be the One Little Indian equivalent of The Breeders "Title TK" ;-)

that's definitely true...I know I've advertised releases with them that never got coverage. Oh well, can't win them all!

four years pass...

Didn't want to start a new thread for this, but I appreciate Harvilla's evenhanded and fair review of the new Black Keys, especially when he digs in a little to the band's history and reception. I don't think they're doing anything particularly noteworthy, but after seeing them live last year I think they do what they do pretty well and the snarky "lol Blueshammer" stuff sells them short.

So, my latest piece for them is up, this time on the new This Mortal Coil box set:

nice review, ned. wish i could get that box, but geeez, how many deluxe box sets can i really afford this year? who wants to get it for me for xmas.

i have no problem w/ new bands doing blues-based music but i really do get terrible blueshammer vibes off the black keys, they're just the worst

I just noticed they'd published the worst cover art list. Too bad ILX was down, because there wasn't as much crossover between our thread and the list this year.

ha i was trying to find that and skipped passed it because mac miller's album art looks like some kinda lightweight indie electro pop album

Can we get Ned and Drew to keep cranking out box set reviews. Maybe even aero the next time some uber-obscure black metal band issues a set.

Okay, I'm pretty sure I now 100% don't understand the point of "Best New Reissue" if they are going to give Tago Mago a 10 and not give it that tag.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Friday, 9 December 2011 14:15 (twelve years ago) link

It's a great album, but maybe this is not a significant improvement on previous versions of it? The extras certainly don't sound as though they're crucial and it's presumably the same sound quality as the last re-issue.

I found that Harvilla Pitchfork review willfully shallow & insightless, actually. Anyone who's attended their shows in the last few years has witnessed the steady growth in their audience—and the reasons why...
