:-(

This one of the reasons why people hate The Mars Volta without bothering to actually try listening to one of their albums. Dudes, they're NOT metal!

If I liked Mastodon, would I like anything else on here?

i wouldn't buy anything on there except for mastodon and slayer. in fact, i DID buy both of them. i like deftones, but i haven't heard the new one.

scott seward (121212), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:24 (seventeen years ago) link

it's pretty good but not insanely great.

max (maxreax), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Tool and possibly the deftones.
I was disappointed in the Lamb Of God album though perhaps I should give it another chance. But it was a bit too Pantera-ish for my tastes. I liked the ones before it a lot.

actually the new deftones was really good, i thought. very autumnal-sounding.

10,000 days grew on me. the mastodon was pretty cool, slayer ditto. the lamb of god--meh. everything else can suck it.

How did Panic at the Disco end up on there? Is that considered peripheral to metal?

I purchased the My Chemical Romance record for cheap at Circuit City and I like it well enough. Apparently I am 13 years old.

kerrang isn't very "metal" anymore. it's basically the UK equivalent of Alternative Press now.

The AMG one is better. Like a billion times better. This list makes me very unsurprised that I've never picked up an issue of Kerrang.

adam beales (pye poudre), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 20:38 (seventeen years ago) link

plus as long as you are listing post-emo bands or whatever, to not include The Early November's album is pure idiocy.

Matt Cibula (Formerly, the Haikunym), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh my god, the AMG metal list makes me want every single album on it (except the orchestral one, I could do without that).

I am the best lyrocost since Dylan (Scourage), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 20:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Louis, is that because you own all the records on the Kerrang list already?

pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 22:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Raconteurs being in there is interesting. Is garage rock only considered part of the Kerrang aesthetic if it includes Jack White? (And if so is that because he is sort of goth, I guess?)

xpost: I only own two, the ones I've already mentioned. I thought I'd be getting the Muse record but from the songs I've heard it's SIGNIFICANTLY worse than their previous two, which were actually pretty damn awesome. Or perhaps I'm simply growing out of them?

Perhaps need to borrow the Tool as well; there's a band I feel I need to pay more dues toward.

I thought the Comets On Fire and Isis albums would have made the list. The Agalloch should be there too.
Surprised the Iron Maiden album didn't make it either.

Why do all popular music magazines make me want to be buried alive?

Andi Headphones (Andi Headphones), Thursday, 21 December 2006 00:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Should I listen to that Muse album? I'm alright with Muse sometimes.

Cap'n Guthrie (retardo1), Thursday, 21 December 2006 00:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Missing from the Kerrang list

Enslaved, Negura Bunget, Mercenary, Daylight Dies, Katatonia, Agalloch, Novembre, Celtic Frost, Intronaut, Insomnium, Keep of Kalessin, Melechesh, Moonspell, Unexpect, Kayo Dot, Ihsahn, Aborym, Ansur, Mouth of the Architect

Terrorizer list due early January

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 21 December 2006 00:34 (seventeen years ago) link

No Melvins or Harvey Milk either.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 21 December 2006 00:47 (seventeen years ago) link

No Om! At least that made The Wire list I suppose.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 21 December 2006 00:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow. Almost all of the records on that list suck, including the new Slayer record.

I'd invest in: Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, Satyricon, My Chemical Romance.

I think it's high time that somebody breaks into the publishers and puts in some anthrax between the pages of every copy of Kerrang.

Stevie from this place has repped hard-ish for a bunch of garage rock stuff in Kerrang... Jack White and his doings dwarf everyone else's coverage, of course.

That's not a bad list, I suppose. I had no idea anyone in the field of rock journalism gave a shit about Taking Back Sunday, always seemed like a band made for and by 15-year-olds

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 21 December 2006 10:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Stevie's top 10

1 Comets On Fire - Avatar
2 The Bronx - The Bronx
3 The Raconteurs - The Raconteurs
4 The Drips - The Drips
5 Howlin' Rain - Howlin' Rain
6 Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
7 The Mars Volta - Amputechture
8 Mudhoney - Under A Billion Suns
9 The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control
10 Two Gallants - What The Toll Tells

Will he be submitting the same top 10 list to thelondonpaper?

Dom Passantino (DomPassantino), Thursday, 21 December 2006 11:00 (seventeen years ago) link

the list i submitted to london lite:

ALBUMS
1. J Dilla, Donuts (Stones Throw)
2. Comets On Fire, Avatar (Sub Pop)
3. The Bronx, The Bronx (Wichita)
4. The Raconteurs, Broken Boy Soldiers (XL)
5. Brightblack Morning Light, Brightblack Morning Light (Matador)
6. Scritti Politti, Black Beer White Bread (Rough Trade)
7. Amy Winehouse, Back To Back (Universal)
8. Corrine Bailey Rae, Corrine Bailey Rae (EMI)
9. The Gossip, Standing In The Way Of Control (KRS)
10. Sonic Youth, Rather Ripped (Geffen)

which is the same as the list i submitted to MOJO. K! policy has always been that records that aren't reviewed in the magazine can't be submitted to the end of year lists.

stevie (stevie2), Thursday, 21 December 2006 14:01 (seventeen years ago) link

also, i hate making up such lists and always forget great records. also, yes, i really liked the corrine bailey rae album. i am 'that guy'.

stevie (stevie2), Thursday, 21 December 2006 14:03 (seventeen years ago) link

No Circulus on the list either. I would've liked to have seen the Envy, Mono and Growing albums get on a list somewhere.

"Compare this years list with those from 1982-2005!"

there was a thread on ilm where we talked about kerrang's past lists. definitely a strange "progression". it's just a schizo identity that they have now. like a lot of magazines, i guess. throw something at the wall and see if it sticks.

scott seward (121212), Friday, 22 December 2006 20:13 (seventeen years ago) link

What do you think was the best list of the year in the old issues? My favourite was 1992!
