very disappointed and disturbed that this thread doesn't just say 'GOTCHA!' when you click in

sede vacante (blueski), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:08 (seventeen years ago) link

That's for sure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha. Dissapointingly not terrible, but not gr8 either.

Ugh @ comment box morans

Norman Phay (Pashmina), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link

"We are not interested in this has-been" and "Brett you're a knob" seem pretty OTM to me!

Brett Anderson in Christina Aguilera shock

haha NME in indie-boosting elitism, er, SHOCKA

Come to think of it, "Beautiful" would have fit in nicely in Suede's catalog. It all seems so obvious now.

No Time Before Time (Barry Barry), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:16 (seventeen years ago) link

i dont know who this guy is but beautiful is a wack fucking song

and what (ooo), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I do know who he is but I agree with Ethan entirely!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:28 (seventeen years ago) link

i think it's a good song, maybe even great. indifferen to BA really.

sede vacante (blueski), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Words can't bring him down.

Leon Czolgosz (Leon), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 17:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I still prefer the cover I produced a couple of years ago.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 04:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Clem Snide beat the both of you to it (unless you produced their album)

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 04:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Patti Smith covered it on New Year's 2004!

Great song.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 05:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I will give it the glam descend in the chorus. That's it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 05:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I have never heard the Xtina version to my knowledge.

Yes, I live in a bubble.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 06:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Obscure indie wanker covers rubbish production line pop song; ILM popists write into papers.

editio princeps (pato.g27), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 08:01 (seventeen years ago) link

How many years until Christina becomes a gay icon first and foremost? A ways off I'm sure but I can't help but feel I'll be watching gay men give slightly ironic but awkwardly sincere (campy isn't really the word here) tributes to her music till I die. See, once you enter the gay canon you can never leave the public spotlight really...Christina seems to have figured this out and now I've resigned myself to her presence in pop culture.

*Don't even get into the fact Brett Anderson has a "complex" sexuality

Bizarro Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 08:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I can actually imagine this working quite well. Aguilera and Anderson share a taste for vocal largesse - where most indie covers of pop songs fall down is the plaintive indie whine factor.

It will be better than "She's In Fashion" or the like surley.

Tim F (Tim F), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 10:43 (seventeen years ago) link

brett anderson somehow manages to combine vocal largesse AND plaintive indie whine into one unlistenable fey/wimpy mix though. ugh.

lexpretend (lexpretend), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 11:05 (seventeen years ago) link

They let Xtina go blind
But everyone she knew thought she was beautiful

Ruud Haarvest (KenL), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 14:07 (seventeen years ago) link

At least Brett isn't doing Dirrty

sede vacante (blueski), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 14:14 (seventeen years ago) link

That's more Travis territory.

BRETT ANDERSON
The Solo Album
Released March 26th on Drowned in Sound Recordings

Brett Anderson's solo debut marks the return of one of the UK's most critically acclaimed singer- songwriters. After a hugely successful decade with Suede and a triumphant return to form with The Tears, he's back with one of the most pertinent and impressive solo albums of recent times. Personal, contemplative and passionate, the result marks a brave and exciting phase for Anderson and his audience.

The man behind the voice that formed a cornerstone of Britpop in the 1990's, Anderson's solo effort opens a new chapter in his illustrious career. Written and co-produced by Anderson and Fred Ball, the 11-track LP is a journey into his own personal emotional landscape but carried off with enough skill to make listening a universal experience.

“In the past I've hidden behind characterization and vignettes,” says Anderson, “but I've not done that here. Essentially I have taken a knife to myself and am showing the world my insides. The songs are a comment on how I really feel, whether it be the death of my dad, my hatred of consumerism or just the loneliness of life.”

Bristling with angular acoustics and supple strings, the album is an arsenal of songs for an unsettled world. Highlights include the emotive, soul-baring 'Song For My Father' the smouldering, melodic 'Scorpio Rising' and the beautiful, brooding 'Love Is Dead'.

"'Love Is Dead' is one of those rare songs that you manage to write every ten years that explains how you feel in exactly the right way. The last time that happened was with 'Trash' ten years ago, " he says' " it seems right that it should happen again now"

"It's a very important record for me to have made. No guests, no gimmicks, just me and the music"

Live dates for 2007 will be announced shortly. Promos available soon.

Where've you been? I've been watching gay men mince to Xina since at least "Come On Over."

The Tears were so successful, he's packed them

Oh, and Fred Ball? Not Ed ball then?

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Haven't heard it but sounds as though it would make absolute sense. Sir Reg Dwight was a major boosterer for 'The Still Life', which I would imagine is the springboard for this cover.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

if brett had sworn off the drugs he would probably have enough money to see him through to old age with some dignity. but not.

I do like "Love is Dead," based on hearing it a couple of years back from a Copenhagen show with an orchestra. (Momus and C4lum disagreed, amusingly enough.)

no joke.
and i have to admit that this too was the 'WTF!' part of the mailout for me too, despite not really having any valid reasons to be so surprised.

I know it's not the best quality recording, but Brett's piano sounds like it should have been tuned a year ago. And his use of the loud pedal seems odd to me.
