THE FIELD

so i listened to this when it first came out but i dismissed it because i was heavy into disco and recent villalobos but i read the blurb about it on pitchfork and 'over the ice' is so very good. their track on total 6 is pretty good but do they have anything else like this?

"like a rave with your eyes shut" or something like that

it maybe moves around too much but i think it still works

both sides of the Things Keep Falling Down 12" are worth hearing: a longer version of the song on total six and another 10+ minute track, love vs. distance.

the over the ice single is more distilled. this single is longer and more free-form

i love the sun & ice ep - i think 'istedgade' is my favourite...

I was just listening to The Field in the car.
I really liked "Over the Ice" too, so I bought the mp3s they had on Kompact--Sun & Ice EP and a few comp tracks. I was looking for "Love vs. Distance," but i didn't see it on there.
I think I might like "Istegade," as well, now--maybe more than "Over the Ice." The other tracks are still nice to listen to, but maybe not as standout.

Thanks above for that liveset.

"paw in the face" is my newfound fave on _sun & ice_.

woah. listening to that live set just posted i discover that my beloved "paw..." is wrangled out of lionel ritchie's "hello"! the vinyl fades right before "hello." weird.

i fully recommend "kapsta" from pop ambient 2007. GAS + aphex circa saw ii.

This set is great so far. I've heard enough of The Field to know most of their stuff is based on chopped loops, but hearing them play out and presumably do so live is something... more?

Put "Love vs. Distance" on my singles list last year, came pretty close to including "Istegade" this year. Am already kinda regretting not doing it, actually. I like everything I've heard and will be checking out those links w/heightened interest--thank you!

I don't think I was very kind about this in the Total 7 thread. Thought it was pretty cheesy & obvious at first until I heard it in a set with some contrast around it. Still a tiny bit unconvinced tbh. One trick pony? (downloading that set now of course).

still nice, still makes me suspicious :|

fandango, is it something about the production? too hermetic, maybe, and then the self-conscious glitches to rough it up?

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 00:36 (seventeen years ago) link

It just sounds a bit TOO easy!

I know, I know, it's an illogical criticism (why shouldn't house/techno be as easy to make and predictable to compose as guitar/bass/drums if it works?) but this stuff seems almost designed to aggravate Kompakt haterz "nu-trance, there's nothing to it". It reminds me of Border Community stuff to me, but without even their IDM twitching. It doesn't feel self-concious in a glitch way, maybe in a bit TOO twee/cheese way. It is very pleasant.

I don't feel this about "For Dan" (and prob. other tracks) though.

i think i know how you feel about "nu-trance" hating, i definitely feel it

friday on the porch (lfam), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 02:24 (seventeen years ago) link

well I definitely read it, IRL I'm not sure anyone (maybe Jay Haze...) gives a toss? of techno labels with some level of mainstream penetration, m_nus are probably way more bitched about? Total 7 definitely had me agreeing with some of the doubters for the first time, but that was for more than just The Field's tracks. And their Immer track (For Dan) is a real highlight.

Da Mystery of Sandboxin' (fandango), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 02:39 (seventeen years ago) link

responding to the second post: i love that it moves around too much. i think it's its saving grace actually. that and the soul usage.

josh (josh.), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 04:06 (seventeen years ago) link

The Sun & Ice EP is so, so good but Istegade is probably my least favourite on there. It sounds more like glitched-up French house to me (that particular track, not the EP as a whole).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 09:33 (seventeen years ago) link

hearing 'Under The Ice' for the first time now and liking altho can't help thinking more of an Allien-esque vocal presence would improve it (for me). also would like those arpeggiated sequences to be both more pronounced (hmm, do i just mean louder?) and a bit 'wilder' at certain times.
