It's a tribute to the renowned British artist Stan Spencer, after whom I named my pioneering music blog which I started way back in 1972, when technology was so primitive I had to write the articles using Etch-A-Sketch.

I always figured it had something to do with Eminem's "Stan," but the few responses here make it clear that I'm even more off base than I thought I was. Nu-ILM = INFORMATIVE AND UN-SARCASTIC YAY

Ray Cummings (skateboardr), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

It's a reference to the suffix in the names of several Central Asian countries.

(xpost yeah, Eminem, although I don't think it really became a standard hip hop insult until Nas used it in "Ether" ("You a fan, a phony, a fake, a pussy, a Stan"))

Hurricane Stan was the eighteenth named tropical storm and eleventh hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It was also the sixth of seven tropical cyclones (three hurricanes, two of them major, three tropical storms and one tropical depression) to make landfall in Mexico. Stan was a relatively weak storm that only briefly reached hurricane status. It was embedded in a larger non-tropical system of rainstorms that dropped torrential rains in the Central American countries of Guatemala and El Salvador and in southern Mexico, causing flooding and mudslides that led to at least 1,662 and possibly up to 2,000 deaths; Stan is estimated to be directly responsible for 80 of these.

Stan! was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in the Long Island town of Wantagh. He played a lot of tennis, read a whole lot of comic books, and dabbled here and there with both writing and cartooning. Stan! might not have been an exemplary student, but he went through the Levittown educational system without getting any of his classmates or teachers to ever threaten him with bodily harm (and hey ... what more can you ask from a public education?). He graduated from Gen. Douglas MacArthur H.S. in the spring of 1982.

Stan and Jan Berenstain started drawing together when they met in Miss Sweeny’s drawing class on the first day of art school at Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art (now called The University of the Arts) in 1941.

They both lived in West Philadelphia but on different sides of the line that dictated school assignments, or they might have met much earlier. Both Stan and Jan enjoyed school. They liked to read. They like sports, but, most of all, they loved to draw.

So what's a fruitfly?

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

haha yeah I always meant to say, isn't 'fruitfly' a more obscure term than 'stan'? i'm not sure who originated it, but some of the more popular rap bloggers tend to refer to the people who leave hundreds of inarticulate comments on their posts as fruitflies.

Do you guys not speak English or do you have some kind of animal-species autism???

M@tt He1ges0n (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:18 (seventeen years ago) link

A fruitfly is a straight female woman who enjoys the company/friendship of gay men. in case that was a serious question.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

nabisco, knowing what a species of animal is /= knowing what it signifies to refer to a person as that species of aminal

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:31 (seventeen years ago) link

no fruitfly, no credibility

M@tt He1ges0n (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha okay Al but animal metaphors as descriptions of human behavior = one of the first and most basic examples of figurative language and not incredibly hard to figure out, in this case, which is why I didn't ask if you knew what a fruitfly was (you could look that up), I asked if y'all had some weird species-behavior autism that prevented you from intuitively figuring out what fruitfly-related qualities are being referenced here. I mean, it's not a stretch, or anything. It's like if a really fat guy walked past and someone said "omg that guy is a whale" and someone said "wait, what's a 'whale?' I'm not familiar with that term."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Bumming a fag would have been much funnier. If you were out for dinner with Beavis.
