1. Snow Patrol - Eyes Open

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Sunday, 17 December 2006 12:21 (seventeen years ago) link

2. IT IS CALLED TRON MAN STIGMATA
I SAMPLED STATIC FROM A VICTROLA AND PROCESSED THE SOUNDS

telephonething (telephonething), Sunday, 17 December 2006 12:32 (seventeen years ago) link

3. George Formby - Turned Out Nice Again

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Sunday, 17 December 2006 12:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I predict a surprisingly high placement for Celtic Frost's Monotheist. I'm probably the only writer who nominated it, but they really seem to care what I think lately, so you never know.

Phil Freeman (unperson), Sunday, 17 December 2006 13:53 (seventeen years ago) link

4. Fly By Wire Zytec Quick - Africane Extra-Strength Tablets

editio princeps (pato.g27), Sunday, 17 December 2006 14:17 (seventeen years ago) link

To my mind, the winner is amongst these 3 records :
Scott Walker "The Drift"
Wolf Eyes "Human Animal"
Joanna Newsom "Ys"

matthewB (aerial00), Sunday, 17 December 2006 14:29 (seventeen years ago) link

do you read the wire

this is cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 17 December 2006 16:30 (seventeen years ago) link

hahahahaha

I've only thumbed through an issue of The Wire, and I know that's ridiculous.

Zachary Scott (Zachary S), Sunday, 17 December 2006 17:11 (seventeen years ago) link

2. IT IS CALLED TRON MAN STIGMATA
I SAMPLED STATIC FROM A VICTROLA AND PROCESSED THE SOUNDS

roffle

amon (amon), Sunday, 17 December 2006 17:50 (seventeen years ago) link

roffle here too.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 17 December 2006 17:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Not sure why Matthew's list is ridiculous. Could easily see it being one of those.

Mark (Mark R), Sunday, 17 December 2006 18:56 (seventeen years ago) link

indeed, i can't see it being anything other than Ys or The Drift at the top.

Zachary Scott (Zachary S), Sunday, 17 December 2006 19:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess when I flip through the Wire, I'm usually unfamiliar with at least half of the music reviewed, so I figured the year end lists would reflect that.

Zachary Scott (Zachary S), Sunday, 17 December 2006 19:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Tron Man Stigmata doesn't pull in the readers, right?

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Sunday, 17 December 2006 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

amazing how any sonic youth album gets automatically entered into the top three

also amazing how practically none of those albums have had any longevity

this is cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 17 December 2006 19:28 (seventeen years ago) link

i think the last time i heard any m.i.a. was in a toyota ad.

bohren un der club of gear (bohren un der club of gear), Sunday, 17 December 2006 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Galang always makes me want Thai food.

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Sunday, 17 December 2006 19:57 (seventeen years ago) link

The Derek Bailey one "Ballads" is prettty much a classic. As is "Blemish", probably the Albert Ayler too (if thats your thing). The rest are regrettably shitty.

Alex Williams (Gekkopel), Sunday, 17 December 2006 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Red Cross is very good.

arthritic hand golden fist (RSLaRue), Sunday, 17 December 2006 20:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't care if he died or not, it's good.

arthritic hand golden fist (RSLaRue), Sunday, 17 December 2006 20:07 (seventeen years ago) link

also amazing how practically none of those albums have had any longevity

Geogaddi still gets played on a nearly weekly basis, at least for me.

Zachary Scott (Zachary S), Sunday, 17 December 2006 20:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I listen to that Fennesz one all the time and some of my friends went nuts for The Books after they played locally. Results vary, apparently.

mh (mike h.), Monday, 18 December 2006 03:59 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah well i listen to trout mask replica every day

this is cutty (mcutt), Monday, 18 December 2006 04:02 (seventeen years ago) link

You do goddamn not.

Red Cross & the Fennesz record seem to still be desirable to people--they're thing that still sell, at any rate.

ian (orion), Monday, 18 December 2006 04:25 (seventeen years ago) link

i still like fennesz's "venice." animal collective is still great too. the books are still on my list of albums to buy after i lost all my old music collection. i never cared about the rest.

hm (modestmickey), Monday, 18 December 2006 04:43 (seventeen years ago) link

the 2002 and 2003 picks look pretty solid to me, the last two years less so.

surely subscribers must have this issue by now?

toby (tsg20), Monday, 18 December 2006 08:36 (seventeen years ago) link

i have the new issue (rewind 2006 on the cover) and the winners are :

1- Burial "Burial"
2- Scott Walker "The Drift"
3- Joanna Newsom 'Ys"
4- Carla Bozulich "Evangelista"
5- Wolf Eyes "Human Animal"
6- Ornette Coleman "Sound Grammar"
7- Ekkehard ehlers "Life Without Fears"
8- Bonnie 'Prince' Billy "The Letting Go"
9- Om "Conference Of The Birds"
10- Phill Niblock "Touch"

matthewB (aerial00), Monday, 18 December 2006 11:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Four out of ten in common with my list from the top ten alone (and even one in the same position!), which is a sight more than you can say about the NME.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 18 December 2006 11:51 (seventeen years ago) link

You picked three of the top five, not bad.

Mark (Mark R), Monday, 18 December 2006 12:03 (seventeen years ago) link

idem as for me !
scott walker, phill niblock, wolf eyes, burial by order of preference...
in the following ones, there are few of my other favourites :
the knife, current 93, scritti politti, mv/ee, gruppo di improvvisazione nuova consonanza

matthewB (aerial00), Monday, 18 December 2006 12:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I didn't put Burial on my personal Top Ten, but I liked it. The Ornette was a given. I didn't much like Om or Wolf Eyes (man are those guys overhyped), and haven't heard any of the others.

Phil Freeman (unperson), Monday, 18 December 2006 12:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Awesome that OM made it.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 18 December 2006 12:47 (seventeen years ago) link

whither tynan?

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Monday, 18 December 2006 12:53 (seventeen years ago) link

no knife, no credibility

this is cutty (mcutt), Monday, 18 December 2006 13:39 (seventeen years ago) link

What was in the individual list? Like Avant Rock and Outer Limits etc?

pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 18 December 2006 13:44 (seventeen years ago) link

No Knife - exemplary taste!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 18 December 2006 13:47 (seventeen years ago) link

No's Knife - exemplary taste (1967 category)

nick (NickB), Monday, 18 December 2006 14:31 (seventeen years ago) link

The Knife are too pop for The Wire

sede vacante (blueski), Monday, 18 December 2006 14:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Hah, I meant "results vary" in that there's some interest among my group of friends but I really don't think we're interested in these albums in the same way The Wire is. For a lot of Wire picks, I think a Trout Mask Replica comparison is otm.

There are albums I like a lot that I barely ever put on, but I don't think immediate replayability is the only way to judge music. Unfortunately, almost all of the stuff from The Wire falls into the "occasional listening" category for me. I listen to The Knife all the time, though.

mh (mike h.), Monday, 18 December 2006 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

The Knife aren't pop, though, unless whatsisface does acoustic covers.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 18 December 2006 14:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Too pop for The Wire doesn't really mean actual pop, though. Just think goatee music instead of full-on beard-stroking music.

mh (mike h.), Monday, 18 December 2006 14:51 (seventeen years ago) link

i haven't shaved for a few days now so there you go.

sede vacante (blueski), Monday, 18 December 2006 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

The Wire don't do pop.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 18 December 2006 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

MIA =! pop?

this is cutty (mcutt), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:38 (seventeen years ago) link

dissensus block vote innit

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Fuck Burial at #1? Weirdly they only gave it a short review in the "Dub" section at the time of release... Still great record, should you like that kind of thing.
The Knife ARE NOT too pop for the Wire, they did a feature on them sometime this year.

gekopel (Gekkopel), Monday, 18 December 2006 20:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Introduction is imo the best Red Krayola record since they started recording for Drag City in the early '90s. Seems maybe to be getting overlooked a bit w/ year end lists; did The Wire give it a good review when it came out?

Tim Ellison is number one proponent of Beatle!!!Mania!!! on nu-ILX (tim ellison), Monday, 18 December 2006 23:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Didn't they have a pretty long feature on Burial/Hyperdub? I know they had Kode9 in for Invisible Jukebox...

telephonething (telephonething), Monday, 18 December 2006 23:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Did The Wire do the Knife then? Must admit it was easy to miss; these days, even browsing through it in the newsagent feels like going to school, in all the wrong ways.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 08:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, I think it was a sherburne piece in their kind of "new artists" bit near the front (the wire equivelant of "new to Q" but not, obviously haha)

Alex Williams (Gekkopel), Tuesday, 19 December 2006 22:47 (seventeen years ago) link

1. Ggg - + = + Cchrist
2. Lichen Planus - Awash in XOxox
3. . - Heprobates
4. Tyler Graffyd - Moammar 987654321 987654321
5. Euphemism Kilhsdottir - Q!uincy!"Onion-nuts Vol. IIIIIIII

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Tiki Theater Xymposium), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 18:34 (seventeen years ago) link

god, i've been duing to hear the new Ggg record. YSI? ;)

colin0Hara (colin_o_hara), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Carla Bozoulich!!! YAY! She is amaaaaaazing.

Andi Headphones (Andi Headphones), Thursday, 21 December 2006 00:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I left one of her gigs five minutes in because I was bored. Forgive me gods of the Wire!

jim (jim), Thursday, 21 December 2006 00:28 (seventeen years ago) link

That David Sylvian record is really good, as is the Robert Wyatt record.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Thursday, 21 December 2006 00:47 (seventeen years ago) link
