Breaking Atoms for absolutely no rational reason other than I just play it more often.

Goddamit now I've got Ron Carter's opening bass line stuck in my head.

Apparently Atoms is back in print in Japan (!)(?).

Purist fetish item loses to bugged-out iconoclasts every time. In this case Main Source is Beck-Ola, and Tribe is Who's Next. Both classics, but come on.

Definitely Low End, but Breaking Atoms is outstanding.

The Low End Thoery is one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time.

I remember buying Low End Theory on a weeknight, listening to it until really late, not getting much sleep, and daydreaming about listening to it all day during school. These days (= the past several years), though, I'm much more likely to play Breaking Atoms.

The Low End Theory is, along with Endtroducing, the album that convinced my 13-year-old rock-fascist ass that rap might actually be music.

I donno I like both of these albums a lot and haven't played them for awhile. I'm not sure I see the point of comparison though.

deej (deej), Saturday, 16 December 2006 23:42 (seventeen years ago) link

The year 1991 perhaps?

Two incredible, stylistically similar albums released by mutually admiring groups the same year (within two months of one another, I think) -- that's my guess.

xp

I'm not gonna debate the point but they both seem to go for very different things and I guess its the musical comparison I'm having trouble with; they're both going for something very different. But yeah both great albums.

ugh whats wrong with my brain, i'm being so redundent, whats wrong with my brain.

breaking atoms may be better-known for breaking nas than for anything else, which is a shame.

max (maxreax), Sunday, 17 December 2006 01:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I donno I think most 'heads' know it for Large Pro's production, and most everyone else has no idea what it is.

deej (deej), Sunday, 17 December 2006 01:29 (seventeen years ago) link

The circles I run in revere it for the production & prodigous flows.

Yeah I suppose this might as well be a Dave Q thread. The comparison is so random.

Never heard "Breaking Atoms", but "Low End" is probably the first record I heard that made me think of album as album.

I have no idea if this is directed at me or not.

I kick hoosteenical flows/spit spat wahts that (hoosteen), Sunday, 17 December 2006 20:35 (seventeen years ago) link

It's directed at me, I think, because it's what I deserved for ignoring deej's "i'm not gonna debate the point" preface.

Both have highly praised guest verses (Busta, Nas)
At the time both were thought to be products of the Jazz Rap subgenre that petered away quickly.
Low End has the most quoted line, though: "Industry rule #4080..."

ramon fernandez (ramon fernandez), Monday, 18 December 2006 12:57 (seventeen years ago) link

best guest verse on either is Sadat X's on Show Business...

dan selzer (dan selzer), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Sadat X is still good; check him out on the otherwise so-so Juggaknots album from this year.

deej (deej), Monday, 18 December 2006 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

The Jugga record is soso? Man, that's a bummer to hear. After "A Prince Among Theives" I thought Breezely was going to be huge.

so so might be too harsh; i'm enjoying it, just like i'm enjoying the new Black Sheep and X-Clan. I always like Breezly. And his '30something' > Jay-Z's '30something', and not just cuz he has Sadat on the track. I donno its hard to get excited about this stuff, interesting in a veterans-adapt-to-changing-times kind of way.
