My friends' band Cougar, great great record.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 11 December 2006 21:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll rep for that, too. I loves the Cougar.

Kaki King's ...Until I Felt Red was produced by McEntire and reminds me a lot of things like Tara Jane O'Neil, Halfway to a Threeway-era Jim O'Rourke, and Slowdive. Recomended.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 December 2006 21:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Recommendation noted! I love Kaki King. When I saw her earlier this year, before she actually went on I could hear her jamming on the random abandoned drumkit in the downstairs/green room @ The Dame, really throwing down! Then she came up and played that really pretty mellow one with the slide.

my album, if someone puts it out. someone put it out!

Is Kaki considered post-rock? I'm not quibbling defs, just didn't know she claimed/was claimed as such.

hoo got it for steen, vol. 2 (hoosteen), Monday, 11 December 2006 22:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I liked that Tied + Tickled Trio live dvd that came out. The new song on the audio portion kinda sucks though. Maybe they will have a new record in '07.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 11 December 2006 22:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, there IS that potential rumored quasi-Slint reunion (Pajo I think said that everyone wanted to get back togeether and make music, but not under the name 'Slint')

RIYL Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Monday, 11 December 2006 22:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know that Kaki considers herself post-rock, but I'd be hard-pressed to consider some of the tracks on her new album anything but, esp. considering the pedigree of her producer.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 December 2006 22:08 (seventeen years ago) link

NB: I'd never heard of her before, but I get the impression that the post-rock guise is a new thing for her. Her Wikipedia article sez:

With the prominence of electric guitar on the new record and the addition of a full band, The Onion AV Club has called the sound a "post-rock makeover" for King.

Sickoakes - Seawards
Seconded.

Also try
Souvenir's Young America - S/T.
Red Sparowes - every red heart shines towards the sun.
Mono - You Are There.

ha, don't mean to get into a genre-bender, but lindstrom is not post rock :/

i know it's not "technically" post-rock, but that's exactly what i hear when i listen to it. the soft melodies. the mix of electronic and real instruments. it sounds like what tortoise coulda become had they listened to more dance music.

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 11 December 2006 22:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Sickoakes - Seawards

What's this like?

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 11 December 2006 22:28 (seventeen years ago) link

new Guy Fixsen-produced Piano Magic album will be out next year.

akm (akmonday), Monday, 11 December 2006 22:30 (seventeen years ago) link

it sounds like what tortoise coulda become had they listened to more dance music.

it sounds like what fila brazillia coulda become if they weren't such jokers

this is cutty (mcutt), Monday, 11 December 2006 22:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Sickoakes remind me of Bark Psychosis circa "Scum"...(i.e. slow-building instrumentals that gently pulverize)...

I'm looking forward to the Arbouretum record. I'm not even sure if they're all that post-rocky, but they're on Thrill Jockey.

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Thursday, 14 December 2006 16:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I know! Let's be boring and have canapes.

adam beales (pye poudre), Thursday, 14 December 2006 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Hurting, I'd say Arbouretum isn't post-rock, it's like the dead meets helium meets...something. Still working that out. Anyway, it's a superb record, and they're amazing live.

Ray Cummings (skateboardr), Thursday, 14 December 2006 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, The Dead was the first band I thought of when I saw them. I almost wanted to call them "post-jam"
