I am absolutely APPALLED at how overwhelmingly pretentious 30 Seconds to Mars are.

The best part is how they have NINJAs in a CHINESE-themed video.

Not to mention simply BAD.

Oddly enough, staying here I saw seven golden bowls make cakes and religion (goo, Saturday, 9 December 2006 21:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Pretentious = Good you dope

I think he means pretentious by stupidity rather than pretentious by ambition, which are two wildly different things. Johnny Borrell is the former, Ultrasound (my favourite purchase of 2007) the latter.

Nah, if Johnny "Brown" Borrell was pretentious his band couldn't possibly sound that fucking lumpen. Even folx with ideas way above their station make loveable follies, sometimes.

Johnny Borrell: "I am the best lyrocost since Dylan", if that's not fucking pretentious then I don't know what is!

That typo may have staying-power.

I dunno if that's pretentious so much as wrong on many, many levels. I take your point tho.

It's also a standard indie-schtick tsctic isn't it? Deliberate trumpeting of own huge talent in classic canonical cackrock stylee. TM Ian Brown, probly.

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Sunday, 10 December 2006 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Possibly. I'd still say that everything emanating from Borrell's mouth reeks of deluded pretention. (pretension? never did know how to spell that one)

At least when Noel Gallagher said "We're The Beatles and The Stones, Blur are Hermann's fookin' Hermits!", he had his tongue lodged firmly as ever in cheek. Nobody measures up to Borrell's sheer idiocy, not even Kasabian. Yes, I just said that...

Not pretentious enough.

Nice Esteban Buttez (King Esteban), Sunday, 10 December 2006 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

The video, I mean... this HUGE giant entrance where they're these like revered ninjas or something, and then the slo-mo screaming into the mic w/ the fist clenched (and it's really funny and sloppy when he throws his head back, and then the next shot he's back screaming into the mic w/ his fist clenched again)

And the whole thing seems to take itself so impossibly seriously. And all the crazy emo eyeliner.... in 2003 it was just stupid and ridiculous; now it's a totally embarassing pastiche of sorts
