i know hating on the Grammys is an exercise in futility and all, but big LOLs at the album of the year category: Dixie Chicks, Gnarls Barkley, John Mayer, RHCP, and Justin Timberlake. the best part of that hodge podge is that, aside from John Mayer, they all went through really bizarre career trajectories to get to their current Grammy-bait state (benign pop country turned political firebrands, southern rapper and indie rap producer turned bona fide pop phenomenon, funk-rap-rock cheeseballs turned elder statesmen of alt-rock balladry, boy band eunich turned R&B james bond sex god).

i was only vaguely aware until just now that these weren't the same song:

Field 7 - Rap
Category 33 - Best Rap/Sung Collaboration
(For a Rap/Sung collaborative performance by artists who do not normally perform together. Singles or Tracks only.)

• Smack That
Akon Featuring Eminem
[SRC/Universal Records]

• Shake That
Eminem Featuring Nate Dogg
Track from: Curtain Call - The Hits
[Aftermath/Shady/Interscope Records]

Grammys rock categories be lovin' some modestly successful later singles off of albums from the previous year:

• Talk
Coldplay
Track from: X&Y
[Capitol]

• Every Day Is Exactly The Same
Nine Inch Nails
Track from: With Teeth
[nothing/Interscope Records]

• Lonely Day
System Of A Down
Track from: Hypnotize
[American/Columbia]

(xp) Also not to be confused with Snoop Dogg ft. R. Kelly, "That's That."

And the award for weirdest set of nominees in a single category goes to...

• Chun Li's Flying Bird Kick
Arctic Monkeys
[Domino Recording]

• The Wizard Turns On...

[Warner Bros.]

• Black Hole Sun
Peter Frampton
[A&M Records/New Door Records]

• Catsellorizon
David Gilmour
Track from: On An Island
[Columbia]

• Super Colossal
Joe Satriani
Track from: Super Colossal
[Epic]

yeah, best rock instrumental performance is always a clusterfuck of bands w/ singers who happened to put one or two token instrumentals on their latest album. check out previous winners (my personal favorite WTF moments are "Block Rockin' Beats" and the Allman Brothers somehow winning for "Jessica" in 1996):

Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Dr. John, B. B. King, Art Neville, Bonnie Raitt & Jimmie Vaughan for "SRV Shuffle"

is this song about vietnam??

and what (ooo), Thursday, 7 December 2006 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm guessing from the title and the blooze rock allstar lineup that it's a belated Stevie Ray Vaughn tribute

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Thursday, 7 December 2006 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

to the tune of "Super Bowl Shuffle," obviously

It makes me sad Michael Stuart is not getting a nod for Back to da Barrio (in the Tropical album category). I'm amused Victor Manuelle doesn't show up on that list, even though there are other albums there just as undeserving as his (Gilberto Santa Rosa and Tito Nieves in particular). I'm almost as surprised to see Tiempo Libre a second time as I was to see them the first time one of their albums was nominated for a Grammy. (They certainly tour really hard, in every little backwater, but I'm not sure how much that has to do with the nominations.)

Nice to see the Tego album that hasn't been out that long made it in the Latin urban/alterantive or whatever category it is.

Shit like this always kinda irks me:

Field 14 - Folk
Category 67 - Best Traditional Folk Album
(Vocal or Instrumental.)

• I Stand Alone
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
[Anti]

• Gonna Let It Shine
Odetta
[M.C. Records]

• Adieu False Heart
Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy
[Vanguard Records]

• We Shall Overcome - The Seeger Sessions
Bruce Springsteen
[Columbia]

• A Distant Land To Roam
Ralph Stanley
[Columbia/DMZ]

I hate it when they let big time well known artist like Springsteen and Rondstadt do a little "tourist" bit...I mean I don't follow the genre but I'd rather see it go to some niche artist that actually earns their bread in the genre....unless there's no good modern folk, but I find that hard to believe.

Michael Stuart does not seem to have enough industry or media support for tropical.

The blues nominees are so different from the Memphis based Handy Award nominees (I think the Handy awards may have been renamed). Big shocker I guess that the Grammy voters prefer stuff on big labels.

Who actually votes for Grammys, anyway? Isn't it old studio musicians and others in the 'industry' who have somehow qualified?

So is it official that The Grammy committee has the same taste as every southern white college girl?

I mean, I don't mind me some college co-eds but I wish they'd at least date me before they told me what music I should listen to.

The jazz category's pretty solid this year - Ornette should definitely take it, but the Garrett album's pretty great too, and the Rollins and Trio Beyond discs are very solid. I haven't heard the Corea disc.

OK READY FOR THIS?:

Album Of The Year
(Award to the Artist(s) and to the Album Producer(s), Recording Engineer(s)/Mixer(s) & Mastering Engineer(s), if other than the artist.)

Stadium Arcadium
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rick Rubin, producer; Ryan Hewitt, Mark Linette & Andrew Scheps, engineers/mixers; Vlado Meller, mastering engineer
[Warner Bros.]

THANK YOU VLADO MELLER FOR COMPLETELY DESTROYING MILLIONS OF CDS, HERE'S A FUCKING GRAMMY

Like, I seriously do not understand this at all. Obviously, a lot of the nominations will be a bit off the mark, but this is the complete opposite of what they're awarding. It's like me trying to come up with the five best gangster rap albums and then adding something by Dolly Parton.

And let me say something, if I may, about James Blucking Funt. Around this time last year I heard "You're Beautiful" on WXPN and was like "holy shit this is really awesome", and then I listened to it more and more times and realized that it was in fact not actualy awesome, but had extreme awesome potential to be the next "Bittersweet Symphony" but instead was made into a pile of cheese. The lyrics are immature and horribly written. The production was devastatingly cliche, from the PAINFULLY trite acoustic guitar that comes in at the beginning before the verse, to the weak and underwhelming string section throughout the song...

Tom Rothrock, you had the potential to make a really good song and you fucked it up unbelievably.

jaymc coz I really liked it at first. Iunno why. This was before it was all over the place and everyone was like "zomg this is so bad" so I had no prior opinion of the song. And it didn't take me that long to realize it was shit.

"Maybe the musical guest can play some extra songs. Who is he?"
"James Blunt."
