Amy Winehouse -- Lioness

this is making me want to ;_;. On "Tears Dry (original)" right now, the version on Back to Black was my favorite on the album, and I expected just some rough cut version, but its an alternate slowed down soul version that serves as an effective counterpart to the uptempo Motown-ish number.

Man it sucks that she died :( :(

About to listen. Hope I can control myself.

wow i'd never heard her do "will you still love me tomorrow"

my friend and i happened to catch a few minutes of some cash-in programme about amy, complete with talking head cunts spouting nonsense and speculation. it made me feel a bit ill. i really fucking wish she was still alive.

i haven't heard & don't particularly intend to hear lioness; if there had been a selection of close-to-fully-formed new tracks i'd have been interested to hear those, but the track listing couldn't make it more obvious that they just scrabbled around on the floor for some substandard offcuts that she dropped over the years.

it's mostly great tho, really the only thing that's questionable at all is the tony bennett duet

you're a substandard offcut, lex.

another suggestbanite (rusty flathead screwdriver), Sunday, 25 December 2011 17:19 (twelve years ago) link

that was unnecessary

i only listened to a couple songs but they sounded great. why wouldn't you want some loose cuts from winehouse?

yeah this is hardly like the Michael Jackson first posthumous album which was filled with passable, decent material, but not much else. This is some pretty choice material. There isn't an underlying theme to hold them together, but it's some quality music that many of us haven't heard from an artist we loved that died too soon.

choose not to listen if you want. it's your loss.

Between the Cheats, other than being much cleaner production wise, could easily pass for an authentic song from the late 50s

That Gamble & Huff-style version of "Tears Dry" is stunning, and makes me wish she worked more with those types of arrangements.

yeah. i really expected it to b e some boring demo version and it turns out to be a version that can stand on its own two.

what's made me choke up the most is random acoustic youtubes from like 2007, where it's just her and a guitarist. it's hard to imagine anything here could be as powerful as those but i'm very willing to be proved wrong.
