http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djent
Seems to be getting more and more popular in the underground. Could it be the next big things? (john justen will be stabbing his ears by 2013)
I imagine djent will be like (lol) Dubstep or (lol) Metalcore, where young guys will see this as progressive music and it will be big in certain circles but then every young band will make it,labels signs loads of them , a few bands will sell a lot and the music will then get watered down and sell even more and will become as ubiquitous as the aforementioned dubstep or metalcore (guaranteed djent-step/djub-step will happen and whiney will cover it in spin)
I've only heard 2 of the actual 'djent' bands , one was TesseracT ,a band from the UK and it just seemed mathy to me, nothing to dislike for me (i love love love math rock), and i know a few ilxors who liked it a lot. Then there is Animals As Leaders, as recommended by the aforementioned john justen, I didn't expect to like this as i thought it would be a bit too flashy. It certainly is flashy, but somehow stays below the line of unacceptability. Which is exactly what jjj says too.
No doubt in 6 months i'll hate this subgenre for being everyfuckingwhere and i really do hate in metal those obsessed with 'technical proficiency'. Just like in the 80s. I really hope we dont return to the days of guitar shop wank (sorry jjj, but you will feel that pain even more) but for now i hope the music is progressive and good.
so if there are any good djent bands out there, please recommend them.

ice cræm is probably right in that if these bands were instrumental they would be more tolerable. It's inevitable that most of them will have shitty metalcore vox innit

Many members of the metal community have criticized the term djent and questioned its validity as a genre.Post-metal band Rosetta has said Maybe we should start calling doom metal DUNNN.[15]In response to a question Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe stated There is no such thing as "djent," it's not a genre.[16]

like, the "distinguishing features" of this genre seem to be palm-muted guitar chords and virtuosic guitar solos?

Djent is a heavily palm-muted guitar chord. The word djent is used to describe the guitar tone made when a two-octave power chord is palm-muted. Bulb (a.k.a. Misha Mansoor) says it best: ”[Djent is] the onomatopoeia of a heavily palm muted distorted guitar chord which is usually played as but not limited to a 4 string double octave powerchord, and as a result sounds much more metallic and sonically present than a ‘chug’ ‘chugga’ or ‘djun’ per se, and which is basically how Periphery would describe its palm muted guitar sound.” Lately, the word, coined by Fredrik Thordendal of Meshuggah, has also been used to identify bands that incorporate this in their music. Some would argue it is growing into a genre of its own; others disagree and go by Bulb’s definition, or refuse to use it altogether.

not being a metalhead at all, i just listened to a couple youtubes by periphery and tesseract. and they were pretty bad. extremely anal digital production and "sounding basically like evancsence" seem like better descrips than "palm muting"

oh ha have i never told this story on here?
so this older dude is playing "rock and roll hoochie coo" in here one day and this ratfaced knowitall kid i despise is hanging out boring me and getting his chubby little fry grease fingers all over anything, and he sidles over to the dude and tries to correct how he is playing it. and the guy sort of ignores him, but the kid wont stop or shut up and finally the older dude just stops and says "look, im not playing it wrong, seriously". and the kid just keeps being pushy and saying that he is and the dude responds with "hey, i know i am playing it right because I AM rick derringer, man." which he was.

that animals as leaders album is one of my favorites of the year. it's more or less progressive death, kinda audibly dudes who dig satch-style shred records but who also love extreme metal. honestly though I think rechristening it as a style might be positive for more people hearing some of the bands that play good & interesting technically accomplished shit like this, most of these bands aren't exactly raking in the bucks.
― undervalued aerosmith tchotchkes sold in bulk, Friday, 23 December 2011 03:41 (twelve years ago) link
it might also lead to a bunch of shite uninspired clones too though. But that can happen without a "scene"

I can always not listen to the ones I don't like, it doesn't really bother me if there's a bunch of crappy bands within a scene
