cannot possibly pick between Linus & Lucy and Skating

well, could possibly (will probably) pick Skating in a December poll just bcz it's more wintry, but, decision hurts

As beautiful as "Christmas Time Is Here" is, "Linus and Lucy" all the way. Which is as good a reason as any to link to this (which I'm quite sure everyone's seen by now--it keeps getting pulled from YouTube and reposted):

Voted 'Skating,' but the vocal version of 'Christmas Time is Here' is gaining. Maybe next year.

Isn't that Sherman?

OH NOES, Monday, 12 December 2011 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

I thought the green shirt at the back was Sherman.

Oh man -- I'd never heard that Outkast mashup.

Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 12 December 2011 16:25 (twelve years ago) link

oh, then that's probably 5

OH NOES, Monday, 12 December 2011 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, that's 5 but he was just a straight background character in this one, along with the twins. Who I think were only ever in the TV shows and not the strip itself.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 December 2011 17:24 (twelve years ago) link

Ah, no, I take it back -- leave it to Wikipedia:

5 had twin sisters, dark-haired girls named 3 and 4 and all three siblings appear in A Charlie Brown Christmas where they have non-speaking roles, but demonstrate distinctive 1960s dance moves during the dancing scene. 5's dance is the famous head-bobbing, side-to-side shuffle that has been widely parodied

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 December 2011 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

And 5 had first appeared in the strip a couple of years before the special so it's clearly meant to be him as opposed to just generic kid.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 December 2011 17:26 (twelve years ago) link

okay lol:

Poochie was a female character who first appeared on January 7, 1973. She was almost the first person to adopt Snoopy but was distracted by an English sheepdog while Snoopy was fetching a stick Poochie threw; Snoopy held a grudge against Poochie for this for years afterward. In her sole physical appearance in the strip (she had been mentioned by name in previous strips), it was also revealed that it was she who had first started to call Snoopy's owner Charlie Brown.

OH NOES, Monday, 12 December 2011 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

His full name is 555 95472. Someone e-mailed me his picture, and I made the mistake of thinking it was Sherman.

clemenza, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

my dad has the original book in which 5 is introduced. i recall him mentioning his sisters 3 and 4, but i don't think they actually appear there.

mookieproof, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:44 (twelve years ago) link

I seem to remember a character in the mid/late-80s who kept changing her name randomly. She sat behind Charlie Brown in class, he'd address her by what he thought her name was, and she'd say, "No, today my name is _____." Did this character actually have a consistent name? Or did I imagine this? It seemed incredibly bizarre at the time.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 00:01 (twelve years ago) link

I'm mystified at these results; having amassed a primary A-list collection of holiday music spanning some 8+ hours, the winning track presented here didn't even make it past the first cut. Yeah, it's a fine tune, but far too associated as the eternal Peanuts theme song to be included with the genre.

What's next, "Jingle Cats"?
