Songs with twist endings.

Twist endings are common with films, but what about songs? At the moment I can only come up with "The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane" by Dean Martin, where the twist (a pretty funny one, I think) comes in the final line... Any others?

I guess "Time" by Killah Priest has sort of a twist ending too.

And they gone keep on callin' and tryin'
But you stay right girl
And when you get on, he leave your ass for a white girl

a giant mechanical ant (a giant mechanical ant), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 19:31 (seventeen years ago) link

are you talking about "Big Girl" Juan? -- the song is as misogynistic and pro-blow as you could want(?), until the last verse, when his conscience kicks in and he gets all tender and tells the girls that their nose-hair is getting burnt, that they need to enroll in college and settle down. it's pretty unexpected and effective after a whole album of hard-assery.

a giant mechanical ant (a giant mechanical ant), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

"Save Your Kisses For Me" by Brotherhood of Man has the same "twist" as that Dean Martin one.

If the time is right my love just might
Set you all afire

I need this
I need love
I need you
I don't need one hearbeat
I need two

There's an emptiness I need to fill
And only one emptiness will do

Only a woman, Can brighten up my day
Only a woman, Can touch me the right way
Only a woman, Is allowed to touch me there
All I ask is that you're a woman

I like rain, I like ham, I like you
You're around, you're right here, So you'll do

I'm gonna tell you how much I love your mind
But it simply isn't true

Only a woman, Can brighten up my day
Only a woman, Can touch me the right way
Only a woman, Is allowed to do what you're doing right now
All I ask is that you're a woman

And on Saturdays when I've been partying hard
And it's 4 in the morning, and I'm on my fifth tab of E
That's the only time I don't even care if you are a woman

Right now, Only a woman
Can brighten up my day
Only a woman, Can do it just the right way
Only a woman, Should be doing that right now
I just want you to be a woman, Please just be a woman
Or a man

(spoken)

I awoke in the night with a fever and the sky was the darkest blue and a still voice was calling to me
"your country is needing you" Aye just like that.
and away in the distance i can just make out this ball, coming in from the left, and i'm starting to run,
to run like hell and the voices are getting louder and louder and louder, crying, "Hey big yin, gaun yersel'"

(sung)

I have a dream (we have a dream)
If dreams come true (If dreams come true)
then bonny Scotland (then bonny Scotland)
i will play for you. (we'll play for you)
Now i hope and i pray (we hope and pray)
that if, if i do (that if we do)
Then bonny Scotland we'll play for you

(spoken)

Now the next thing i know, someones gaun and tripped me and i've fallen just inside the box (that's a penalty)
Now ref he loks to his linesman and he's pointing right at the spot! (that's brilliant)
Now John Robertson, who normally takes them, is handing the ball to me (you dont say)
and then i hear ma old lady screamin' blue murder, shes saying, "thats no the ball yer kickin' ya eejit, its me!"

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 12:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I ws going to add "My Girl Bill" as well.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 13:01 (seventeen years ago) link

That's not really a twist, though, as it's implied in the title.

Certainly didn't become reality :-(

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 14:41 (seventeen years ago) link

We've done "Save Your Kisses For Me" but there was also a follow-up "My Sweet Rosalie"; for respective twists see "Clair" and "Get Down" by Gilbert O'Sullivan.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 14:43 (seventeen years ago) link

there's always "Cat's In The Cradle" + the number of highschool teachers who thought the twist was deeply meaningful.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 14:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Harry Chapin was good at that - see also the (internal) twist at the end of "Taxi."

The Velvet Underground's 'The Gift' off of 'White Light White Heat' : seriously twisted.

Kinks-"Lola"

I was going to mention this, but the twist is revealed pretty early on.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 22:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Someone really ought to make a film of "The Gift."

Watching Love, Actually on TV last night (NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST IN HALF A SECOND) I thought of numerous actors I'd like to play Waldo Jeffers.

Several songs off Funeral by the arcade fire, what songs, I don't really remember.

mehlt (mehlt), Thursday, 7 December 2006 22:17 (seventeen years ago) link

OH MAN!

I just remembered my fav twist ending...on "Midnight" by Ice-T (off the OG album)...he has a big adventure all night where dudes try to kill him, he escapes etc etc...then the last line, he gets home and says "I walked inside it was SIX IN THE MORNIN'! [big echo]"...basically meaning that this song had been the prequel to the events of his earlier his "6 in the Mornin" which starts "6 in the mornin, police at my door, fresh addidas squeak across the livin' room floor"....thought that was super clever and both songs are great.

I think The Smiths' "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" qualifies. Just the weird way the sound drops out, making you think it's over.

"My Mind Playing Tricks On Me" by Geto Boys. Yes, the title kinda gives it away, but not specifically.

Also, whatever that Biggie song was where he comes out of the place after pulling some gangster shit and his car has been towed because it was double-parked.

PPlains (PPlains), Saturday, 9 December 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll take back "Lola" and replace it w/"All She Wrote" from the Ray Davies album.

When you found somebody new I thought I never would
Forget you for I thought then I never could
But time has taken all the pains away until now I'm down to hurtin' once a day...

Once a day all day long and once a night from dusk till dawn
The only time I wish you weren't gone is once a day every day all day long

I'm so glad that I'm not like a girl I knew one time
She lost the one she loved then slowly lost her mind
She sat around and cried her life away oh lucky me I'm only cryin' once a day...

Once a day all day long...
Once a day every day all day long
