'Wish' Deluxe CD in 2012 & new album?

Along with the news of the Secret 7" art competition, there was this included in the bio at the Talenthouse website:
"The Cure have been re-issuing re-mastered versions of their early albums since 2003, with 1992's 'Wish' (the album that carries the single 'Friday I'm In Love') scheduled for the 'deluxe re-release' treatment in 2012....The band are currently working on a new studio album"

Hope this is accurate, and part of what Robert was alluding to as "STUFF BUBBLING AWAY IN THE BASEMENT".

Huzzah.

The new live album that just came out is fun enough -- not enough songs from the last two decades, but hearing a lineup of Robert/Simon/Roger/Jason is pretty cool.

Wow did you still NEVER get a copy of that?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 10 December 2011 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, that was a lot of fun. reminds me of my first days here at ILM

Not all that into Fat Bob et al BUT I'd really like to hear the BBC sessions. Anything in the works about getting them out?

I think this is the first official Cure release that I'll pass on - not sure when I would feel compelled to sit down and listen through yet another rendition of Inbetween Days and Lullaby.

Reflections DVDs on the other hand...

I think missing the second guitar REALLY pulls a lot of power out of the band, most of the songs that aren't super keyboard heavy sound thin to me (ESPECIALLY Wish era material).

OH NOES, Monday, 12 December 2011 16:03 (twelve years ago) link

I could imagine that being the case but, as a band, I think stripping things down is the way to go for the Cure - now if only they could record an album with minimal overdubs and production flourishes...

I do remember some place doing a 'cover' project of every Cure album up to that point, in a massive disc in folder edition for all the contributors. And a special one for Bobert, which they presented to him, personally.

Now, I do know he is MASSIVELY conflicted about 'covers' (He had a Terry Edwards' cover e.p. cancelled, and banned a 'stars in their eyes' contestant), but I do remember the pic of himself and another Cureman getting presented with it in a 'oh right... um... ta!" fashion.

(This wasn't that one, was it?)

err, how can an artist ban a cover?

baaderonixx, Monday, 12 December 2011 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

One of the tracks was less, um, faithful to the original.

I did have a copy of it, it wasn't massively insulting to him. (Then again, it wasn't that good either, his "Jesus and Mary Chain" done in the style of the theme to "Match of the Day" was a lot better)

Nope, four-disc live best-of IIRC, compiled from soundboardy-quality sources - maybe plus a bonus disc of audience recordings? Of course I may not RC because Ned's stunned "NEVER?" is correct. Six, maybe seven years ago?

yeah same here - signed up but never received the fancy redux thingy

so i listened to part of Bestival Live 2011 as it just came out and as stated above really isn't that good. the Cure really seem to need that fifth member, at least, live to get a better overall feel.

Bee, Saturday, 17 December 2011 05:58 (twelve years ago) link

It's a curio. My greatest disappointment with it is the set list.

I've heard a few rumors now that next year the plan for live shows will be _The Top_ and the like. Which would be GREAT to see.

I sure hope so - this album was laborious at best -- such a squandered opportunity.
