Skot's Second Attempt At Vinyl To MP3 Conversion! This One Is For Milton! I Think.

Unless he already has this record. In which case, it is for others to delight in. I give you Tobie Lurie, the premier poet of the 20th century, and his 1971 LP Word Music! Two files. Side one and side two.

I should mention that most of this is Maria's doing. She is starting a low-power fm radio station here on the island and they are going to start webstreaming before they actually broadcast via transmitter. thus, she will be pillaging my recks for the station's on-line library. So, this is a test of sorts. she is using audacity.

we just hooked the computer up to the stereo. it seemed like it was only recording in mono though. i dunno, maria hasn't really fiddled around with it yet. we just wanted to see how easy it could be. pretty easy! although it helps that she has a website that she can dump MP3s on. i'm thinking of getting my own website. she pays 200 dollars a year.

The music teacher at the grade school I went to was a friend of Tobie Lurie's. This was back in '79 or so, in Spokane, Washington. Anyway, this music teacher got Mr. Lurie to come to our school for a special presentation. Lurie (a nice, bearded old hippie gentleman, fat, but not to an unseemly degree, hardly creepy at all) got us each to choose a word or short phrase we liked, and he then conducted us - like bright young tape loops - having us each reproduce our chosen sound on command, in long babbling streams. It was fun, and had some of the inscrutable allure of "real art."

I bought one of his books and had him sign it for me. The poetry itself was ... alright.

ah, I'd heard side 2 of this, Don Joyce was mixing it in to one of the older Chopping Channel shows on 'Over the Edge'. never knew what it was, though.

side 1 is a bit much with the 'touch me dad' stuff but side 2 is great! Charles Amirkhanian and Margie Swiss Cheese, eat your heart out.

Scott and Maria, that LPFM thing is very exciting! Congratulations! I work in radio and volunteer at a local LPFM as well as my regular station, also have some engineering knowledge if you ever need advice. This email works.

oh yeah, you are recording in mono for some reason.

sleeve (sleeve), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:03 (seventeen years ago) link

You want to make sure that all the cables you're using run stereo to stereo - no mono connects. When I first started burning vinyl (last year), I had stupidity-related problems with that...

adam beales (pye poudre), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:14 (seventeen years ago) link

thank you martin hannett

obi strip (sanskrit), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:48 (seventeen years ago) link

What, was he stupid too?

adam beales (pye poudre), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:57 (seventeen years ago) link

it seemed like it was only recording in mono though.

Adam's right, make sure yr cables are stereo-to-stereo, but also check Audacity. If you go to Edit->Preferences there's a setting that controls how many channels a new track will be, and for some reason I think it defaults to mono in some versions of Audacity.

Also, if you do File->Export to WAV you'll have nice lossless files. They're a lot bigger than mp3s but they'll sound great, and you can convert the WAVs to mp3s very easily later. I'd love a WAV copy of "The Happy Egotist" in stereo - that song's my new obssession...

I'm streaming now from my computer
http://rs1.radiostreamer.com:8360

I expect a computer in the mail in a few days then the wvvy.org website will go live. For now it's just a random selection from my music collection, bumped every half hour by an annoying ad to register software. It will get better.

Maria :D (Maria :D), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 02:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, and thanks for the Audacity tip - I'll try to do a stereo version of The Happy Egotist in the next couple of days.

God bless you, and Scott, too.

Now playing something truly weird that Scott put together by recording a tv show on tape and using a second tape recorder to edit and mix. It's called Sally Shoe and lasts about 20 minutes. Not for most people.

Maria :D (Maria :D), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 03:42 (seventeen years ago) link

here's what the Trouser Press said about Sally Shoe..."Amateur sound collagist Scott Philly sent us this in a polka dotted shoe box and we should have guessed what it would sound like.Well,we would of been wrong.Using whole snatches of current TV weirdo Sally Jesse Raphaels interview with a panel of fashion designers,Sally tries to tell truths about her audience by the style of shoe they wear. The joke is on Sally as SPhilly rewinds and fast fowards her almost inhuman cackling, spitting, choking, demon inflected laughter and commentary with one designers fey comments about hapless middle amerikans style sense. The result is nothing short of ODD,that's regular odd with capital letters.A mirror held up to society is often an ugly excercise, but when the listener is in on the premise at least the ugliness is tempered with humor...1988"

milton parker (milton parker), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 20:11 (seventeen years ago) link

paresthesia hilton (get bent), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

omg, my brother is so stoned. danny, how long did it take you to write that? it is wonderful though. it might be the reason i was put on earth. we'll put it up later for everyone. maria is working now though and i am sick :( (caught baby's stomach bug. ugh.)

scott seward (121212), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 20:42 (seventeen years ago) link

that took me .45 seconds, the tyme it took to me to roll yet another for the ages.

daniel seward (bunnybrain), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 20:51 (seventeen years ago) link

it was just that silly mono/stereo setting in Audacity, now recording in two tracks.

I'll plan to play that sally shoe piece on my stream again. I have to reboot the stream every half hour cuz of demo software and I got the stomach bug too, so if the stream isn't up, try again later. I'll shoot to have the sally shoe piece play in a few minutes.

Maria :D (Maria :D), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:42 (seventeen years ago) link

actually it might take some time. the version I played that jbr heard was my edit down to twelve minutes. scott's orriginal 22-minute one is sicker. I have to transfer it over to the streaming computer.
