bump this thread when you want to talk about a song on Underworld's _Barking_

I have spent most of this year obsessed with "Bird 1", it is a brutally brilliant, evocative song of the long-form type I didn't think Underworld would do again after "Pearl's Girl"

The way the lyric flits between the prosaic and the surreal while maintaining that beat speaks directly to what I look for in music

Burning (burning)
Burning (burning)

"Always Loved A Film" was 2010's best song.

Find myself wishing PvD hadn't nerfed "Diamond Jigsaw". When I first heard the live version of that it was my happiest moment as a UW fan in nearly a decade. Those chord changes (where he sings, "put me in your care") were so much bigger, and the guitar was replaced with this ridiculous 80's synth (very much like the ones Van Halen used in "Jump", but a couple octaves lower).

I hope this album doesn't get overlooked. It really is very good.

the first three tracks are so overpowering that it's easy to underrate tracks like "Grace"

those plus "Between Stars" and "Diamond Jigsaw" kinda made me forget about everything else. ever hear the original "Moon in Water"? that one also got nerfed badly.

I haven't heard the in-progress live versions of any of these.

lol I just restarted this album

and a moped started up
sounding like a chainsaw
of tiny firecrackers
and he smelled time again

well the live DJ is kind of a crappy boot, hence why I got so excited for the "real" version. "Moon in Water" was part of a radio broadcast that streamed at 192kbps so sounds good and has been ripped plenty of times. Basically it's a lot "deeper" (no dance beats, doesn't have that hook either) and uses the Applespeak voice "Vicki" which gives it a surreal atmosphere. But IMO its way better. Some of the original mixes of "Always Loved a Film" were quite interesting too.

oh yeah, "louisiana" is a great, gentle closer.

just played Diamond Jigsaw loud on the jukebox tonight, you know Paul van Dyk really has an amateurish style, the keyboards are underneath everything barely audible but kinda to the point where they should either be turned up or just deleted altogether. and there's one section where he clearly uses the wrong beat preset for one measure. just a weird 'remix'

the tune itself is gold though

oh yeah the 1992-2012 anthology just released, pretty cool stuff. basically it's the same as the 1992-2002 but with 3 tracks from the last decade. that seems low but outside of Barking they haven't really been in singles mode. that said only "Scribble" made the cut.

disc 3 is all rarities, including a lot of old stuff from 1992 and 1993, a couple of dubnobass outtakes, then some really great recent stuff like "Parc" and "JAL to Tokyo"
