man how did i forget about ulver. I guess i was thinking that everyone would say its not metal
― Minga Frump (Jimmy Riddle), Monday, 12 December 2011 16:40 (twelve years ago) link
Because it's not.
― EZ Snappin, Monday, 12 December 2011 16:40 (twelve years ago) link
Its not good either. I know they're sort of a sacred cow around here and I really liked their last one, but I thought this one was terrible.

its great
― Minga Frump (Jimmy Riddle), Monday, 12 December 2011 16:43 (twelve years ago) link
it's okay; I'll give it a couple of points. I figured if Barn Owl can pass muster, then Ulver shd be able to as well
― massachusetts_capricorns_cru (henrietta lacks), Monday, 12 December 2011 16:53 (twelve years ago) link
I'm really interested in reading a defense of this album or an explanation of why its great, because I'm just not finding anything to latch onto.
(xp)
I had Barn Owl on my list of noms, but took it off because I didn't think it'd be accepted as metal.
― I left my login in El Sandboxo, Monday, 12 December 2011 16:54 (twelve years ago) link
its cool; I will def vote for it (Barn Owl) but I didnt expect it to count either, but I mean if nu-Earth counts I dont see why they wouldn't
― massachusetts_capricorns_cru (henrietta lacks), Monday, 12 December 2011 17:00 (twelve years ago) link
I thought this Ulver stank too. Huge disappoint me after the last one.
― EZ Snappin, Monday, 12 December 2011 17:11 (twelve years ago) link
its as metal as the opeth album
― Minga Frump (Jimmy Riddle), Monday, 12 December 2011 19:06 (twelve years ago) link
I'm not arguing whether its metal or not, I'm arguing that I thought it was terrible and I'm curious to hear what others loved about it.
― I left my login in El Sandboxo, Monday, 12 December 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link
haven't heard it but I generally 'like but not love' ulver in their various permutations. so, now I'm curious - what was so off-putting about the last one?
― alan, Monday, 12 December 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link
It's not even close to metal in any form beyond perhaps the theme's explored. At least there are moments of actual heaviness on Opeth.
I like Ulver, but this new one was perhaps the most disappointing thing I heard all year.

I was also disappointed at first by the new Ulver, and while I still don't like it quite as much as Shadows of the Sun, which was one of my favorite records of the past few years, I've come around to thinking it's actually pretty good. Why do I like it? I guess for a lot of the same reasons I liked the previous one: the unusual but thoughtful approach to composition, lovely melodies, interesting arrangements, provocative lyrics. I guess one thing that might put people off is the 14 minute final track - which is basically a spoken prose poem over minimal ambient accompaniment. Maybe it's a love it or hate it type thing. It's become probably my favorite track, but you kind of have to approach it as literature as much as music though. I still think the 2nd track is kind of unsuccessful and breaks up the flow. But overall, it's a worthy follow-up, I'd say.
