I haven't seen any talk about Boldy James' "Trappers Alley: Pro's and Cons" on here. I've listened to it maybe 300 times in the past few months. his show here in october was amazing. Let's discuss

The first video is dope. He's not the most spectacular rapper but i'll listen to it. I bet i'll need several listens to get into it.

sisilafami, Saturday, 3 December 2011 02:15 (twelve years ago) link

can we make this a year end goon thread? i'm kinda bummed that i can't pore over the gun sounds thread to remind myself of what albums/mixtapes i still need to hear.

Mr. Stevenson #2, Saturday, 3 December 2011 02:21 (twelve years ago) link

i mean if it's really important to have a dedicated boldy james thread i won't infringe upon it w/ my idea

Mr. Stevenson #2, Saturday, 3 December 2011 02:22 (twelve years ago) link

i would like to read a list of yr top rap albums tbh

є(٥_ ٥)э, Saturday, 3 December 2011 03:04 (twelve years ago) link

kinda caught off-guard but i can def. make a 2011 goon list

i really feel though that this year has been less and less about tapes and more about individual songs (possibly true every year but hey)

gucc_ebooks (tpp), Saturday, 3 December 2011 03:23 (twelve years ago) link

what im saying is i've never heard of 'boldy james' unfortunately but i'm british and only really hear about rap music thru u goons etc.

nice of them to take notice right before the marlins broke ground. they can really save the taxpayers some money before things get out of hand.

v-shasty, Saturday, 3 December 2011 04:22 (twelve years ago) link

Boldy tracks are okay? I like the production but the rapping is sorta monotone flat and undistinguished. Could be a grower.

Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 3 December 2011 06:23 (twelve years ago) link

i think rolling white girl thread is >>> regional thug but w/e

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:45 (twelve years ago) link

its def a grower -- hes def not a flashy rapper in any way. if any of yall are feeling cormega, he's like a midwest version of that

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:46 (twelve years ago) link

my problem w/ regional thug is the implication that as a category none of these artists deserve your attention, or that they're the fucking rap equiv of jerk music or something, or that they are permanently exiled to being less-covered than g-side when imo there's a huge variety w/in that stupid little bubble

but interpret it as me being 'butthurt' even though that makes no sense if you want

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:47 (twelve years ago) link

i'm ok with this being a year-end thread, as long as at least a few of you are willing to discuss /check out the rapper mentioned at the top; his album is one i've come back to a lot

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:48 (twelve years ago) link

'regional thug' is just straight up disrespectful frankly

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:50 (twelve years ago) link

who's the producer on these boldy james tracks? it's got a nice premier feel to it.

Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 3 December 2011 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

well at least the second one does.

Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 3 December 2011 17:13 (twelve years ago) link

"Concrete Connie" is produced by Brains, "I Sold Dope All My Life" is produced by The Plug. I don't really hear the Premier thing on "Concrete Connie" too much. Maybe it's because I know Boldy's from Detroit but to me this is in that same vein of cracked/distorted-street-soul music as Dilla's overall vibe w/out sounding particularly dilla-ish

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 00:57 (twelve years ago) link

oh c'mon you are so butthurt.

'regional' has NEVER been pejorative in rap, it just means an artist that has the kind of LOCAL STREET LEVEL FOLLOWING that you value so much

it is a pejorative when a wide variety of artists are lumped into a category called 'regional THUGS' while certain particular artists are put into noble categores like 'hard working weedheads' and 'blue color rappers.' im angry about the lack of respect shown by the chart for history & for perspective, that doesn't make me 'butthurt' & any time someone is angry you guys throw around 'butthurt!!!' like you've scored major points

yeah i'm as shocked as anyone. on his record there's even a cool kid guest verse (an asher roth one would have been distracting but i don't really have a problem w/ michael rocks, i actually really liked "cell dope" from earlier this year)

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

also fwiw i disagree that regional thug = has a big following, it's obviously true of a few artists on there but it isn't the case of boldy james particularly -- i mean he has fans, but not like the jacka does where he can live off regional money (at least not yet) nor do i see why having been smart enough to develop a scene regionally makes one a 'regional thug' as if its a permanent albatross to be hung around their necks

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

im angry about the lack of respect shown by the chart

i kind of agree with this. more than anything using 'thug' perjoratively in this context attempts to dismiss gangster rap as a whole as dated or irrelevant; in a sense maybe it is, given what's popular on the charts and judging by what's getting the high-profile critical love

t-pain's a talented dude and i never really got sick of him but the six(!) advance singles off this record have been such a mixed bag that the album could go either way -- tbh i'm much more optimistic about jeezy turning in an enjoyable 'same thing he always does' album

kendrick lamar kind of giving me pusha t vibes in his words promising a personality that his voice can't deliver on
