Best sequencer albums

First post, long time lurker - thought I'd dive straight in with a question, apologies if this is a breach of etiquette.

Anyway, I'm just on the tail end of a massive 70s Tangerine Dream tip and am keen to listen to some more sequencer albums - i.e. records with those massive, 20 minute tracks driven by rolling, relentless synth loops. Not really thinking of either later, more digital/new age stuff, or indeed earlier more free-form psychedelic/guitar-y krautrock - just endless burbling Moogs. Been listening to a few of the Klaus Schulze records of that period - any more I've missed?

don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for but have you heard Gershon Kingsley's God is a Moog? Reboot Stereophonic reissued it in 2006 and it's pretty awesome.

Not sure if it's in exactly the same realm, but I found Laurie Spigel's "The Expanding Universe" at my community radio station and it is a synth monument imo.

Sorry, that's SPIEGEL

I've just been getting into Manuel Göttsching's E2-E4, which is at least half burbling Moog.

^^ otm. I had a similar experience stumbling across this record in the vault of my college station. I think it's sort of a rite of passage for synth-minimalism/ambient nerds.

I also really like the sequencer action on Heaven or Las Vegas by COcteau Twins

Thanks guys - some very nice recommendations there, feeling the Popol Vuh and the Hillage so will have a dig into those.

That Laurie Spiegel stuff is great too, never come across that before...

Was anyone else doing anything as bassy as TD though? Phaedra and Rubycon are HEAVY...

mnida, Thursday, 1 December 2011 14:07 (twelve years ago) link

do TD have anything else like that? i got Richochet but that's kind of a different direction

I'm in the mood to party (J0n Arbuckle), Thursday, 1 December 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

Encore is a good TD album, double live LP but half of it is studio recordings I think.

Check out anything Heldon or Richard Pinhas solo were doing in the 70s or early 80s for menacing sequencer action.

Matt #2, Thursday, 1 December 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

o yeah Heldon is what you want, 1st 4 albums are the most sequencer heavy but Stand By is great too.

Legendary Pink Dots go down this wormhole sometimes... e.g. "No Star Too Far" off their last LP

couple of great Coil tracks like this on the Musick To Play In The Dark discs, one on each.

Jean-Michel Jarre?

Trip Maker I would love a CD quality burn of that Spiegel, it is very rare & expensive

sleeve sandbox, Thursday, 1 December 2011 23:19 (twelve years ago) link

Jarre doesn't do a lot of long-form synth loops but I think in general if you're into that kind of stuff you can't go wrong with Jarre, particularly something like Magnetic Fields

Rolo Tony, Thursday, 1 December 2011 23:20 (twelve years ago) link

I don't digitize vinyl at the moment. A buddy was going to hook me up with a USB turntable he's not using but he hasn't yet. I'll remind him and if I get it together and can remember all this I'll hook you up, Sleeve. That youtube video sounds like ass, the lp sounds much much better.

speaking of Tangerine Dream - are they worth following into the 80's, 90's and beyond?

i noticed on RYM that they seem to tail off in reviews/ratings after the 70's, but I think that's true of most artists with huge discographies (most listeners only take interest in the first 10 or so years for a variety of reasons)

I'm in the mood to party (J0n Arbuckle), Wednesday, 7 December 2011 22:59 (twelve years ago) link

i love tangerine dream's 80s stuff because it makes me feel like i'm driving through a big city at night and the city lights are reflecting off my dad's porsche and i'm going to have some sort of crazy adventure that will take me far from my suburban rambler reality

upper mississippi 2: still shakin, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 23:00 (twelve years ago) link

Thanks for the updates on this guys. Some awesome shouts that I'm cueing up in Spotify now.

J0n: I love most of their stuff up to the mid 80s, but almost everything after that leaves me cold....

Was listening to this the other day...

I finally had to register for the sandbox to comment on J0n's question...after exhaustive research on this very topic, I would say that there's merit in any TD release up to Hyperborea--some might rep for Underwater Sunlight, anything thereafter is pretty snoozeworthy.

Tours of Armageddon (Karaoke Version), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 20:55 (twelve years ago) link

sometimes 1990+ TD tracks pop up on last.fm, some of them struck me as pretty neat - I'm oddly interested in the "Finnegan's Wake" album they just put out. seems like it could be horrible or awesome.

I mean seriously, they've put out like 20+ albums in the last five years, surely they cannot all suck?

I'm in the mood to party (J0n Arbuckle), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

@Karaoke Version, I'll rep for Underwater Sunlight. Not as the best sequencer album but as one of their best piano records. They are walking a tight rope on that one with the abyss being new age, but they stay on the cord in miraculous fashion.

@J0n, I'm afraid they can all suck, yes ;_;

lebateauivre, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 21:21 (twelve years ago) link

well J0n I just t0rrented a shitload of this stuff to answer that same question, and with the exception of 2003's Mota Atma, wherein Edgar dusts off the classic sequencer sound (but just keeps it in the background), they're pretty, pretty bad.

Tours of Armageddon (Karaoke Version), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

so its just generic new age garbage? cant say its surprising
