it's a great album

OH NOES, Monday, 28 November 2011 17:42 (twelve years ago) link

plus now I understand a reference in a Hold Steady song, so bonus

silby, Monday, 28 November 2011 17:43 (twelve years ago) link

which the Hold Steady song do you understand better now?

rusty flathead screwdriver, Monday, 28 November 2011 17:45 (twelve years ago) link

Girls Like Status: "It was song number three on John's last CD, 'gonna make it through this year if it kills me' and it almost killed me"

silby, Monday, 28 November 2011 17:49 (twelve years ago) link

"Tetrapod" kills me quite hard

Julie Lagger, Monday, 28 November 2011 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

I think I listened to Tetrapod like a 1000 times on repeat over the past couple months. I listened to TST so often that I took it off my ipod, just to give other records a chance.

big popppa hoy, Monday, 28 November 2011 18:37 (twelve years ago) link

if it didn't have Up The Wolves* on it, this would be the most perfect record ever made.

*Not a bad song, it just doesn't fit the sound, all chugging guitars and all, taking you out of yr stride.

His last great album, although I love the new one to bits.

Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 28 November 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

I can't really get behind that, I think Life of the World to Come is amazeballs

Heretic Pride is totally awes, back to front. Never really cared about the Bible record. (Still never got around to the new one.)

this song alone is reason enough to venerate the Bible album

OH NOES, Monday, 28 November 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

TLOTWTC and HP are good.

Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 28 November 2011 19:34 (twelve years ago) link

OH NOES otm

HOOS aka driver of steen, Monday, 28 November 2011 19:35 (twelve years ago) link

also "1 Samuel 15:23"

basically that entire album destroys me

OH NOES, Monday, 28 November 2011 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

maybe i just haven't given it enough time. dude has so many albums though, and each is full of in-jokes and details and stuff that demands multiple listens.

the phonecall in pale green things makes me crack up and start balling w/ tears everytime.

the only one I don't like at all is Get Lonely.

Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 28 November 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

Get Lonely has prob been my fave for a while now.

Julie Lagger, Monday, 28 November 2011 21:35 (twelve years ago) link

Get Lonely is my fave from the 00s for sure.

i know j0hn's chill and wouldn't care about what you said about his music either way, but i could never say anything (positive or negative) about his music on ilx, knowing that he'd see it. it's like in tv sitcoms when the dad says "can i speak to you privately?" to the mom, and then they have a really loud conversation about 7 feet away from the rest of the family.

Z S, Monday, 28 November 2011 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

in that regard it really helps that i fucking love the mtn gts, otherwise i guess yeah, i'd just keep schtum.

i never got around to hearing get lonely, but otherwise, from sunset tree on, this band has been on a roll.

I'd the same hesitation, and didn't review one of his records for years, but I love the new one so much that I decided that he'd respect me more for being honest.

Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 28 November 2011 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

i try not to talk about his music on ilx, but a short "i like this record a lot" doesn't seem too egregious to me.

he won't respect anyone here

no matter what you do or say, honest/dishonest

so you may as well get in a I Hate All Your Music anyway

one of the bigger tragedies of a recent HD migration was losing basically all of my mtn gtz albums

all i have left is all eternals deck and we shall all be healed

my cd collection is a scoured graveyard of broken dreams. i THINK i still have TST, in some kind of condition, maybe Tallahassee, but prob not.

The Sunset Tree was the third tMGs album I got. I was just starting to get into it when I started dating a woman who had survived an abusive childhood that transformed into a young adulthood of hard drug addiction. I think that, in that beginning phase of our relationship, listening to the album helped me to look past her scars and damage and craziness whenever those things would bubble to the surface, as the products of an abusive childhood are wont to do. Now we're married with two gorgeous kids. My wife is still a wild creature.

I hadn't really thought about that in a while, but I guess my family is sort of indebted to this record. And to even further extrapolate it, to ilx, since at the time I was listening to it, I only knew tMGs as "this ilx band."

w/r/t LOTWTC, one of my favorite jams from that era is an outtake that he ended up playing live called Proverbs 6:27. Keep an eye out for it!

i think i wanna say "aww" but maybe not? boo abuse, yay love and understanding.

big popppa hoy, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 00:25 (twelve years ago) link

i think that's an aww. because how awesome for a cultural object to be such a part of the fabric of your life, a helpful thing. is a great story, i hope you kick out the tmg jams in the kitchen sometimes, rusty flathead screwdriver

I like J.D. a lot as a dude, so I wish I liked his music more. There are certainly a few songs that I dig, but in general it's just not really my kind of thing.

She is not really into that kind of music and I have yet to introduce her to the Sunset Tree ("Hey honey, I noticed that you have forty-five minutes of downtime in your incredibly busy day. How'd you like to listen to an indie-rock album about CHILD ABUSE?") : ) See also my trepidation about introducing her to say, Tallahassee or WSABH, etc. etc.

We do have a few tMGs songs on a playlist of lullabies for my daughter to fall asleep to on car rides though.

three weeks pass...

http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-mountain-goats-cover-have-yourself-a-merry-lit,66858/

Ouch. I kinda wanted to share this on my facebook wall but I can't because an in-law has gone on a benzodiazepine-induced tear this week that has strained both holiday spirits and family relations about as far as they can get and I think if any of the parties in involved were confronted by Mr. Darnielle's severe countenance and grim parentheticals emanating from their computer screen, someone would burn someone's house down.

This is probably the time nor place for this, but Onion commenters run a close second or third to youtube and redstate commenters in the moron decathalon.

Commenting on websites is a pretty solid indicator in general.

Never heard any mg since ZM but someone posted "This Year" on fb and I played it and played it again and then sent it to some people and played it again, and then the rest of the album, and MAN the wonderfulness has a hold on me now and it won't stop.

the life of the world to come is a horrifying and perfect album. I like a lot of mtn goats records but that one really hits me. it came out while my wife and her father both went through chemo at the same time (he died, she lived) and really resonated. I still haven't listened to the new(ish) album maybe as a result; life was kind of devastating.
