Prelude thread to the the thread about doing an ilx protest record

Ok so I mentioned on fb that with ilx having a mixture of beautiful little LULU musicians and angry young occupiers, maybe we were suited to making a protest record. (tbh the idea came to me when discussing 'There's Power In The Unions' with my dad and thinking, you know who does a killer version of that? An ilxor, that's who. But sb me for breaking the aero code if y'all want.)

So do you think this could work?

Anyone want to join in?

Could people with no musical talent but w/ good oratory speech making skills hook up w/ the opposite? To litter the record w/ spoken word jams like Lulu had?

Disco hits or garage rock guitar freakouts about unfair banking insitutions or inequality or whatever you wanna rage about?

Feel like it needs to be called #OCCUPY YR MIND AND YR ASS WILL FOLLOW

If you wanna talk about it in private or send me anything, my email is samuelpooley [at] gmail.com and I'll make a proper thread when stet continues his fine work and ILX proper is back up.

I have mixed feelings about this, to be honest. I like the idea, but I feel like it runs the risk of self-clowning and ilx zinginess meaning that it may end up seeming more like a send-up of the protest movement rather than a contribution/amusing addition to it.

although you could call it "A Kitten for Hitler" as a tribute to Ken Russell

I would definitely do a monologue, though, if someone wanted to work with me. Or maybe I could just recite Alexandra Kollontai texts over some sound effects records. Yeah, that'd work.

Give Morbs his own song and we should be fine.

I'm with emil.y on this. Hugely mixed feelings. My initial reaction was "hell no, please just don't." Because it's something that could so easily be done so badly and the typical ILX zinginess / clowning thing could just make it so horrible.

But that could just have grown out of a personal sense of powerlessness and being-overwhelmed. And maybe writing and contributing a song could help sort through those THOTS.

Back when I used to write "lots of songs", I'd do a fair bunch of 'political' content.

These days, I look back at some of them and find most of the ones we 'did't do' were horibly direct and misinformed, and awful songs to boot.

The ones that did work related the political to the personal.

we don't have to do it; jeez. i just thought it could be fun & interesting.

big popppa hoy, Monday, 28 November 2011 15:24 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying I'm a bit conflicted about it.

We were just answering your questions.

I would definitely be up for creating a soundscape if emil.y wanted to recite over the top of it? That would be cool.

Fotherington Thomas, Monday, 28 November 2011 15:26 (twelve years ago) link

it would :)yes,

big popppa hoy, Monday, 28 November 2011 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

lol dunno how me typing 'yes, it would :)' ended up looking like that.

big popppa hoy, Monday, 28 November 2011 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, FT, I'd definitely be up for that!

emil.y, Monday, 28 November 2011 15:35 (twelve years ago) link

D'oh, it took me a moment to work out that FT was ~me~. But yes, I will get out the noises-making things at the weekend. (It'd probably be easier for you to recite over existing music, rather than you recite and then send me the aiff files? How would you prefer to do this?)

Fotherington Thomas, Monday, 28 November 2011 15:38 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, I reckon me reciting over music would probably work best, to get the cadences. As I said upthread, I'll probably use a pre-existing text, as I imagine my own political writing would end up sub-sixth form at best.

LJ isn't on dis ting, is he? I just had a thought that me and him and maybe crüt could do an Art Bears/Slapp Happy/Henry Cow cover. That would be pretty amazing.

Art Slap Cow, maybe?

I am down for this, I have been meaning to be more politically angry in my music and stop singing about...well I don't usually write lyrics, so this should be interesting

i (m bison), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 02:44 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I am down for this although it has been a long time since I wrote anything explicitly political.
