I love this! I bought the Transistor Radio album yesterday and I'm so hooked!

wogan lenin (doglatin), Saturday, 2 December 2006 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Someone who cleans the toilets on the floor I work on signs the sheet on the door saying s/he has done so: "M. Ward".

jim (jim), Saturday, 2 December 2006 19:57 (seventeen years ago) link

i've only heard Chinese Translation but i like it alright

sede vacante (blueski), Saturday, 2 December 2006 21:39 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm happy about this, DL. amazingly i think Transistor Radio may be the album of his i like least.

colin0Hara (colin_o_hara), Sunday, 3 December 2006 00:06 (seventeen years ago) link

really? i wasn'tsure which best to by but the nice lady in the hitchin cd heaven said it was her fave. i heard him mentioned on a tom waits thread an d was interedted but i bought it thinking it would be a "listen to it once" job but i think it's a keeper.

wogan lenin (doglatin), Sunday, 3 December 2006 02:16 (seventeen years ago) link

transfiguration of vincent is the one to get

jelky (jergins), Sunday, 3 December 2006 02:41 (seventeen years ago) link

it was me who was talking about him on the Tom Waits thread. of the three most recent albums Transistor is probably the one i like least although i still think it's great. i thought he would never top "The Transfiguration of Vincent" but, much to my surprise, i think the new one is even better.

colin0Hara (colin_o_hara), Sunday, 3 December 2006 13:55 (seventeen years ago) link

then i have you to thank colin. i don't think i'm going to check out his other stuff till i've exhausted this one in that case. i hate getting everything by a new favourite artist within a matter of two months and then suddenly not wanting to hear them anymore.

wogan lenin (doglatin), Sunday, 3 December 2006 19:03 (seventeen years ago) link

The only two I own are Transistor Radio and Transfiguration of Vincent. I know everyone always raves about Transfiguration, but it's never managed to impress me on the same level that Transistor Radio does.

bored of it

Cap'n Guthrie (retardo1), Monday, 4 December 2006 04:59 (seventeen years ago) link

People people! End of Amnesia is the best album. The end.

He is brilliant. I have seen him live a couple of times here, the first was fairly rocky and good fun (Transistor Radio tour) and the second was only recent (for Post-War) that was a little bit slow but beautiful musically.

I do wish he'd try something a bit different more often. I was over the moon when I heard *backing vocals* on one of his newer songs but then it was back to business as usual! It's the little sparks of genius on his albums that make them so worthwhile.

Doglatin, you should really get End of Amnesia, specifiaclly the song "Carolina". It's wonderful! I can't see the album on his website for some reason.

kv_nol (kv_nol), Monday, 4 December 2006 13:18 (seventeen years ago) link

it's out of print, that record. i'll give it another listen, i probably haven't listened to it properly. i agree in part that he should vary his sound a bit more - there's a lovely tabla on Post-War (the track) that really made me prick up my ears.

colin0Hara (colin_o_hara), Monday, 4 December 2006 16:14 (seventeen years ago) link

No! Such a loss. Why is that one gone and "Duet for Guitars #2" still available? Well if anyone needs to contact me off board for further young singers independent of throatclearing the address works after clean up.

kv_nol (kv_nol), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 11:07 (seventeen years ago) link

kv, your posts cheer me up :)

colin0Hara (colin_o_hara), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 12:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Which is ironic considering how depressing how much of his music can be!

Highlight on Post-War: "Requiem" - He did a great job of it live!

I have a very special place in my heart for his cover of "Let's Dance" it's just the most perfect song to play if you're feeling blue/loved up/self-pitying/like being able to sing along to Bowie properly (delete as applicable).

kv_nol (kv_nol), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I would like to point out that on the strength of this thread (mostly da Kevster's enthusiasm) I have bought my first M. Ward album and I liked it so much I bought three more copies to give to people for Christmas. Well done, all.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 7 December 2006 12:01 (seventeen years ago) link

YAY! Which one? They are all good in parts but some have bigger parts than others *boom boom*

kv_nol (kv_nol), Thursday, 7 December 2006 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

You can download End Of Amnesia from eMusic, if you were inclined to sign up. They do free download offers, I understand.

YAY! Which one?

Post War. I'm listening to it now, in fact. The other two I wanted to get wouldn't be shipped in time for Christmas.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 7 December 2006 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Post War is, surprisingly, my top seeding torrent. It's got some insane ratio, like 14 or something.

whoop de doodle (kenan), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:05 (seventeen years ago) link

You should get them as a post xmas surprise! (xpost)

I brough "End of Amnesia" in to work with me today. Listened to it while building and decorating the tree. Had it on repeat, bliss. I feel very xmas-y now!

Kenan, what does that mean? That 14 people are seeding for each person downloading? People sharing the love!

kv_nol (kv_nol), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:11 (seventeen years ago) link

No, it means that it's been downloaded from me 14 times as much as the one time I downloaded it.

whoop de doodle (kenan), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Which with torrents is a lot, because... of how torrents work.

whoop de doodle (kenan), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Check this out:

M. Ward Live on World Cafe (NPR), Oct. 30

I was listening to this at work yesterday and was blown away. He sounds even better live than on record.

Zachary Scott (Zachary S), Friday, 8 December 2006 00:36 (seventeen years ago) link

There's also an interview, in which he comes across intelligently and charmingly, in stark contrast to the Mojave 3 episode I'd listened to just before.

Zachary Scott (Zachary S), Friday, 8 December 2006 00:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, wow. THis is VERY nice. I'm going to Audacity this sucker later. Thanks.

whoop de doodle (kenan), Friday, 8 December 2006 00:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, that first song he plays...is outstanding. Is that off Post War, I think? I need to buy it.

And his live version of Let's Dance is even more kickass than the original, somehow.

Zachary Scott (Zachary S), Friday, 8 December 2006 00:51 (seventeen years ago) link

It is off post war. And yes, you should buy it.

whoop de doodle (kenan), Friday, 8 December 2006 00:55 (seventeen years ago) link

the first song is called "Post War".

kenan, fancy ysi'ing the audacity?

colin0Hara (colin_o_hara), Friday, 8 December 2006 01:29 (seventeen years ago) link

sure. be done by tomorrow. does that email addy work?

whoop de doodle (kenan), Friday, 8 December 2006 01:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll just recored it as one big file, and let you cut it up any way you wish later. Ok? Because I plan to distill it down to the songs, but later.

much appreciated :)

colin0Hara (colin_o_hara), Friday, 8 December 2006 02:07 (seventeen years ago) link

You're going to think I'm a total douche, but I cannot make Audacity work with Vista. In Xp, it was just fine, but now I just can't get the outputs to work. It records my microphone just great, but nothing else. No one wants to hear me talk, so this is a dubious feature at best. I've tried everything I can think of, starting with what worked in Xp, and going down from there. Nothing. Is anyone else using Vista that they can advise me on this? Or even adept with audio input/output settings? Because I could do this 6 weeks ago, before I upgraded my OS, no problems. Now, nothing.

Bee (Bee OK), Friday, 8 December 2006 06:27 (seventeen years ago) link

um when you get all the kinks sorted could you maybe ysi me as well? Email address works after clean up.

He sounds even better live than on record.

Yes and no. Live he really shows his vocal limitations but messes around a bit more, his guitar playing is sensational. On disc though he has a bit more atmosphere and subtlety (especially on his older stuff). Of course it all depends on the venue, I've seen him twice in a venue here that doubles as a dance club thingy so it can be hard to see him from afar and (I know, it gets worse! :) ) there is no seating - two things to guarantee he starts at a disadvantage!

kv_nol (kv_nol), Friday, 8 December 2006 12:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I signed up for eMusic and downloaded End of Amnesia. Kevvy Nol strikes again.

Please don't ask me to jump off a bridge, though. I'm clearly very susceptible to your Derren Brown-like powers.

I have yet to hear it but feel obligated to hear it (because of my year in review thing that I'm doing) before I make out my list for 2006.

I love M. Ward's version of "Story of an Artist" by Daniel Johnston on the latest covers album that just came out.

Darin Fabrick (Darin), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 18:13 (seventeen years ago) link

He's a cool bro.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 22:45 (seventeen years ago) link

He played that live. Claimed it was the "saddest song he had ever heard"

Which album is this?
