Paul Scott's Kooks review at Stylus

This is, as far as I know, and I wasn't part of the commisioning or editing of the piece, a spoof, a fabrication, a parody. Obviously it COULD be real, which is the fun of it. But I'm pretty damn sure it isn't.

The commentors are totally baffled though. As are Playlouder.com, who have it quoted as a news piece (http://www.playlouder.com/news/+have-a-kook-at-t/). I've also seen it c&p'd and emailed around and posted on messageboards in various places with no reference to Stylus at all, as if it is just genuine leaks from record company execs, that people are genuinely (wtf?!) shocked by (news just in - record companies interested in MARKETING).

This strikes me as utterly fucking bizarre. I think it's a good piece. Contentious and controversial, obviously, but pretty well-observed and very funny, especially to someone who's received these types of things (also amusing because I've been party to EMI marketing emails which are NOTHING like this).

Um, discuss, or something.

playlouder don't even entertain the notion it's a spoof.

I know, that's the most baffling thing. To me, even if I didn't write for Stylus, it'd be obvious it was a spoof, otherwise why put "reviewed by Paul Scott" at the bottom?!

As I posted somewhere else entirely, it reads like a would-be comedian's idea of how A&R people talk

and playlouder is funded directly by a record company isn't it? so you'd think they'd know their shit.

Dom tells me DiS's editor claimed it was real and he'd "seen the originals" on a now deleted post on their messageboard.

It's interesting that it's been taken so seriously. I also reckon that your average Stylus reader will have enough knowledge to guess/ know that conversations like that do happen, about The Kooks, about Razorlight, about nearly all artists who chart. You'd have to be increadibly naive* not to.
Perhaps it appeals because it reinforces what people (in this case Stylus readers, Playlouder etc) are already happy to believe?

*I'm sorry, that was an accidental ref...

even if I didn't write for Stylus, it'd be obvious it was a spoof

the self-deprecating line at the end about "Major Webzine" and "who reads that crap anyway" is the biggest giveaway
