I've never heard of Obake, but I'm going to right that wrong today.
Rock-A-Rolla is the Whineyest list, and if I lived in the UK, I could see me and Lou Jag trading CDs of the ones we're missing.

I seriously wish i could run/invent an American version but I think it would sell like six copies monthly
― boof troop (dealwithit.gif), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:50 (twelve years ago) link
yes, like with the RA compilations list, it makes me want to check out all of the records I haven't already heard.
― Neil S, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:51 (twelve years ago) link
I can't imagine rock-a-rolla sells a lot but its been running for 5 or 6 years now I think. It's bi-monthly (like Zero Tolerance) and both are surviving. You can at least get ZT in Smiths. I need to subscribe to get rock-a-rolla. Otherwise i think you can only get it in record shops.

xp totally. Quietus list does this too tbh, but there's def some overlap between the two

I'm kinda curious about the Book of Knots album; I dont think I'd heard of them tbh

the problem with rock-a-rolla is the patton/ipecac worship, which puts me off checking that album george. It does feel like they do this every year.

They really do love Patton (hey, so do i); but I think they could stand to be a little more selective about it. That Book Of Knots album is not the move and that Patton solo album is like maybe the fourth best Patton solo album.
But I'm right in line when they're championing Zu, Dalek, Secret Chiefs, etc...
― boof troop (dealwithit.gif), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 16:09 (twelve years ago) link
And I'm aware my Patton love is just a little more annoying than some dude polling the SYR series or whatever

from a review i saw
Been a lot of coverage of ‘rock’ music here at LTW, serious discussion questioning why The Mercury Prize chooses to ignore the entire genre, and also more lighthearted fun from our kitchen guru Vegan Black Metal Chef – as such I thought I had better take look at rock, but I like my tunes a little darker than most so was intrigued by the first release from Obake – I had no knowledge of this band, a four piece consisting of Massimoo Pupillo (Bass), Eraldo Bernocchi (Guitars), Lorenzo Fornasari (Vocals/FX), and Bales Pandi (Drums) however a little research revealed that its members have variously been members of or worked with Zu, Faith No More, The Melvins, Merzbow, Bill Laswell, Justin Broadwick, and Thomas Fehlmann; some serious names in the sphere of cutting edge and experimental music.

so "has a member of Zu"

nah having the same name as the most popular Canadian rapper of all time was pretty brilliant self-branding, may have been accidental but you should still give yourself some credit for that

I wasn't feeling the Earth and Mogwai, but will re-listen. I got Obake a couple weeks ago and it is definitely impressive. Still listening to figure out how much I'll like it for continued listening. I'm excited to check out Book Of Knots, Loss, Alva Noto, Asva, Enablers, Killl, etc.
I always appreciate Rock-A-Rolla's aesthetic focus, even if some of the albums are just interesting, but I have no interest in hearing much more. For me, they'd be the perfect mag if they expanded coverage a bit and added some writers who are less dismissive of stoner/doom/psych, stuff that may be less innovative and experimental, but often has more staying power, at least in my playlists. I'm just happy I can now get an electronic subscription for a fraction of the price of a U.S. subscription where you get the issues a month and a half after publication.

I wonder if a magazine that covered the very best in lots of genres could survive. Like no genre is out of bounds. If its top notch it gets covered rather than based on sales/label advertising.
Whiney you could save the music magazine.

lots of mags have an ostensibly omnivorous approach or have an 'only the best' approach to covering genres outside their primary interest. obviously nobody can cover EVERYTHING, though the most you could hope for really is ANYTHING, a lack of emphasis or predictability. (xpost)
