lol I saw a really OTM comment in the guardian and then realised it was by tom ewing. figures.
the most irksome comment though is the one about the guardian needing a token black female in the list. like can you stop treating the straight white male experience as normative and universal FOR ONCE. anyway...
three good songs in the top 10 is a pretty good showing for pitchfork I think!
― bayou goo, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:50 (twelve years ago) link
Different things for different audiences of course and nothing wrong with those things per se but personally I just want to hear something that feels natural/organic and has a flow - think mixes become too tense or uptight when they don't do this
This is the fault of the DJ/artist in question rather than the format though?
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:54 (twelve years ago) link
Difficult to say - if someone does an online mix which is organic, and then a CD one which is edutainment or overview, is it the format? the DJ, the label? expectation? internalized pressure?
No idea

Didn't know so many teenage girls read The Guardian
EveChangAs another teenage girl I am delighted to see Beyoncé place so high. But I do wish Male Guardian writers/readers stopped patronising teenage girls. I love Elbow and Mastodon as much as Beyoncé and I hope they place too.Perhaps as a teenage girl, who is as open to pop, metal, hiphop, grime, country or indie, guardian writers/readers should be open minded as teenage girls. It's quite pathetic to see so called 'critics' dismissing entire genres of music.

why wouldn't teenagers i read the guardian! i read it when i was a teenager

Like I said on the other thread, teen girls are better music critics than most of you.

I like that Rock a Rolla list p well, though every album from their top 10 that I've heard is highly underwhelming (with the possible exception of Barn Owl)
― massachusetts_capricorns_cru (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:04 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, that Earth album was a snooze.
― los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:06 (twelve years ago) link
I liked it, though admittedly it was more of the same. The Wooden Shjips album is really good too, as is the WITTR record.
― Neil S, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link
eh I really liked the first track of the Wooden Shjips album but it kinda devolved from there into twee Doors imo
― massachusetts_capricorns_cru (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:08 (twelve years ago) link
(still like it better than Mazes tho; props on Rockarolla for ranking it better than that)
lol at "Twee Doors". Not to be mistaken for "Twee Doors Down"!
― Neil S, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:10 (twelve years ago) link
That Beyonce blurb makes it sound much duller than it actually is though - "refined" and "mature" aren't words I'd used to describe it.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:10 (twelve years ago) link
okay I just went back and listened to 'Lazy Bones' again and it was a lot better than I remembered, though it still has a bit of the cheesy late-Doors album filler feel to it
― massachusetts_capricorns_cru (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:19 (twelve years ago) link
hey kerr does you new issue of Rockarolla have the big AMT feature in it?

Rock-A-Rolla is always my favorite list!
― boof troop (dealwithit.gif), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:45 (twelve years ago) link
have you heard that new Obake record, dealwithit? I've only heard one song from whats been played on outloud but I think it might be a monster!
― massachusetts_capricorns_cru (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:48 (twelve years ago) link
its very good
― Minga Frump (Jimmy Riddle), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:48 (twelve years ago) link
the rock-a-rolla list is always different to all the other lists out there.
― Minga Frump (Jimmy Riddle), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:49 (twelve years ago) link
I've never heard of Obake, but I'm going to right that wrong today.
Rock-A-Rolla is the Whineyest list, and if I lived in the UK, I could see me and Lou Jag trading CDs of the ones we're missing.
― boof troop (dealwithit.gif), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:49 (twelve years ago) link
I seriously wish i could run/invent an American version but I think it would sell like six copies monthly
― boof troop (dealwithit.gif), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:50 (twelve years ago) link
yes, like with the RA compilations list, it makes me want to check out all of the records I haven't already heard.
― Neil S, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:51 (twelve years ago) link
I can't imagine rock-a-rolla sells a lot but its been running for 5 or 6 years now I think. It's bi-monthly (like Zero Tolerance) and both are surviving. You can at least get ZT in Smiths. I need to subscribe to get rock-a-rolla. Otherwise i think you can only get it in record shops.
― Minga Frump (Jimmy Riddle), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:54 (twelve years ago) link
xp totally. Quietus list does this too tbh, but there's def some overlap between the two
― massachusetts_capricorns_cru (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:55 (twelve years ago) link
also lol Kerr I was gonna ask you to send me a copy of the AMT issue for Christmas
I'm kinda curious about the Book of Knots album; I dont think I'd heard of them tbh
― massachusetts_capricorns_cru (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link
aQ usually sells it George. Buy it from them

ok thx
― massachusetts_capricorns_cru (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:59 (twelve years ago) link
the problem with rock-a-rolla is the patton/ipecac worship, which puts me off checking that album george. It does feel like they do this every year.

They really do love Patton (hey, so do i); but I think they could stand to be a little more selective about it. That Book Of Knots album is not the move and that Patton solo album is like maybe the fourth best Patton solo album.
But I'm right in line when they're championing Zu, Dalek, Secret Chiefs, etc...
― boof troop (dealwithit.gif), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 16:09 (twelve years ago) link
And I'm aware my Patton love is just a little more annoying than some dude polling the SYR series or whatever
