i didn't pull her in, dan did when he mentioned that no one cared about kelly unless she was on a song by beyonce or nelly

how have you not heard motivation?
the #1 R&B/hip-hop song of the year, Miguel's "Sure Thing," is #92 on the Hot 100 year-end list.
And that's a song I've only heard because ILXors have mentioned it and I've looked it up on YouTube. Doesn't get much airplay on the Top 40 stations here (even the "rhythmic" one).
― jaymc, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:52 (twelve years ago) link
Lyrically, Miguel uses analogies to express his love interest, such as "You are the chalk / And I could be your blackboard" and "If I'm the lyric baby / You could be the note".

I mean, I only really listen to the radio on the weekend when I'm running errands. So the songs that stick are the ones that are played a million times.
xp Yeah, I'm listening to it now, just because I wanted to make sure I really hadn't heard it.
― jaymc, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:56 (twelve years ago) link
And the pop stations I listen to are B96 and Kiss 103.5.
― jaymc, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:57 (twelve years ago) link
rmde
if you couldn't parse that as "Kelly has never made an EOY pop list unless she's in Destiny's Child or on 'Dilemma'" I don't really know what to tell you
― OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:57 (twelve years ago) link
I'm also not as into keeping up with pop music as I used to be, in part b/c I don't love the aesthetic that dominates in 2011 and in part because I'm lol old.
― jaymc, Friday, 9 December 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link
"Motivation" is #33 on the 'radio songs' chart, so it's bigger if you're looking purely at airplay and not stuff like itunes sales

like, if you want to talk about trebly, harsh songs that sound like cats having sex
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 20:58 (twelve years ago) link
pretty great rap song while wayne is going but it's not a classic or anything
― v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 20:58 (twelve years ago) link
also it gets annoying when played on the radio too much
― v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 20:59 (twelve years ago) link
weezy sounds like a police siren
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 20:59 (twelve years ago) link
yeah it's seriously one of the most unpleasantly shrill songs i've ever heard in radio rotation
― some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 9 December 2011 20:59 (twelve years ago) link
idk, i like "back coupes up and chunk the deuce up" as a rhyme and on principal i think ending verse w/ the same phrase (either slightly tweaked or not) is fun gimmick

misread this as "i like 'back coupes up and chunk the deuce up' as a rhyme on principal" & was like "otm"

lol did you all hate "A Milli" too?
― OH NOES, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:12 (twelve years ago) link
yeah it's too twee
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link
i was kind of an "a milli" detractor at the time but i give it its due respect as a hugely influential song. i don't know why i should extend the same courtesy to one of its most transparent knockoffs, though.
― some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 9 December 2011 21:16 (twelve years ago) link
same here (i wont give up my preference for 'lollipop' tho)

one of my more blatant contrarian positions lol
― joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:18 (twelve years ago) link
in a milli weezy's voice is much lower-pitched and the sample is lower too
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:18 (twelve years ago) link
gonna challop and say 'how to love' >>>>>>>>>>> '6 foot 7 foot'
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link
i agree with that, i hate to admit it but "how to love" is kind of a sensitive well written song
― some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 9 December 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link
i was out in front of the "how to love" bandwagon
― v-shasty, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link
and "She Will" is best of all.
― Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:23 (twelve years ago) link
I was ready to hate it on principle but then I applied the j0rd s. 'where/how often have you heard it' test and it was all over the place and it won me over
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:23 (twelve years ago) link
"A Milli" is one of my least favorite hits of the last few years.
― jaymc, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:23 (twelve years ago) link
you can forgive me for having a cynical initial reaction to a lil wayne song featuring guitar AND singing though, surely (xpost)
― some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 9 December 2011 21:24 (twelve years ago) link
"how to love" is kind of a sensitive well written song
not well sung though
― Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:25 (twelve years ago) link
it's not supposed to be! in fact that's kind of its charm
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:25 (twelve years ago) link
the Phil Oakey Clause does not apply here.
measuring how 'good' a singer is objectively is pretty rockist and/or HI DERE-ish
― dayo, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:26 (twelve years ago) link
the buzzing autotuned "MMMMMMM" that wayne ends the song with is so disgustingly unpleasant that i'll never give the track any credit as an enjoyable recording, but i'm saying the song itself is just fine

It sounds like something Stargate would do at 8AM before they've had their coffee
― furnace mane, Friday, 9 December 2011 21:36 (twelve years ago) link
oh yeah production wise it's kind of ugly and chintzy
― some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 9 December 2011 21:40 (twelve years ago) link
those tinny snare triplets are straight soundclick
it's kind of like if your spouse who doesn't know how to sing or dance or play an instrument, learned how to sing/dance/play an instrument and sang you a love song on your birthday
or baked you a cake that ended up tasting like ass apples (the important part being she baked you a cake)

while Stargate are in the kitchen, quietly drinking coffee.
