If you don't mind me asking Jacob, but do you remember where that awesome looking Houston thiftshop in the flickr stream is (and the name as well)? I don't think I've been there.

The shops in Houston are the ones one Westheimer across from street from the cafe with a greek name which I can't remember right now. They mostly sell chairs and stuff, but there are records in the very back.
― JacobSanders, Friday, 9 December 2011 15:49 (twelve years ago) link
Cool. I haven't done the lower Westheimer thing in yoinks.

Also there's a vintage clothing shop off Westhemier that's sells mostly 60's and 70's clothes, but underneath the clothes are hidden boxes of records. I found two copies of John Hartford's Aereo-Plain and left one for someone else to find. Lot's of other great records in those boxes too.Wish I could remember the name, it's a little house before you get to the american apparel store on the left if you're driving west.

Hey Jacob that "Adventures in Sound" record is the kind of thing we throw in the dollar bin without thinking, so if you're near Hoboken...
― Evan, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 05:19 (twelve years ago) link
What record store do you work at near Hoboken? I'll be working in Pennsylvania all next year and on weekends I will go looking for records.
― JacobSanders, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 05:53 (twelve years ago) link
We're called Tunes. We're in Hoboken. Let me know when you'll be around!

usedta patronise tunes, you are a good store
― Never translate German (schlump), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 23:11 (twelve years ago) link
yeah, "Adventures in Sound" looks awesome
Jacob you should check out some of the flea markets in NJ - Columbia and Englishtown are pretty good. Also depending on how far south you want to go, there's Berlin and Vineland - smaller, but would be a good stop on the way to the shore.

Is there a way to remove a little mildew from a record cover? It's little black specks on the top left corner on the front and a little less on the back. Should I just trash it? I'm afraid it might spread to my other records if I keep it.
― JacobSanders, Friday, 23 December 2011 00:36 (twelve years ago) link
Doesn't bleach kill mildew? I'd wipe it with a bleach-soaked cloth then wipe with a dry cloth and let it air dry overnight.
― nickn, Friday, 23 December 2011 00:56 (twelve years ago) link
ha, i have mildew and moisture stains in hundreds of records but i'm too lazy to clean them up.
vinegar, ethyl alcohol or distilled water will do the trick. wipe the shit out of the cover, then use a hair dryer at a prudent distance and voila!

I'll allow someone else the pleasure of owning an original copy of this astoundingly great album....
If your new one is in true stereo (not "duophonic"), you have a very rare record! I own one of the few known to exist. Tower lost the stereo master tapes after a brief proto run was pressed; so most were either mono (with no reverb) or Capitol's infamous Duophonic fake processed stereo (although it actually sounds decent on this particular recording). Some of the latter (catalog number with DT prefix) wound up in album sleeves mislabelled as stereo (with ST prefix).

Be careful - bleach does remove mildew, but it can also turn anything it touches white. If you use chlorine bleach to remove mildew, mix a spoonful in a cup of water, and use a slightly dampened towel or cloth and promptly dry the album cover. Don't use bleach full strength & undiluted.

aw man i never even heard of the Canyon record, and i really dig the high mountain hoedown LP. those are great basho records too, maybe my two faves. also like that Cayenne record.
i have not posted in this thread at all because i took me forever to ~accept the sandbox~ so i dunno what to talk about, particularly..
i'll have to get back to you.but i'm listening to the incredible string band right now; such a good band.

Haha. At least I didn't recommend mixing bleach and ammonia.
― nickn, Sunday, 1 January 2012 02:16 (twelve years ago) link
I've only heard about the stereo copies, but both of mine are mono. Does it really sound different?
― JacobSanders, Sunday, 1 January 2012 02:16 (twelve years ago) link
Not radically so, but it sounds a bit less insular, and has reverberation that isn't on the mono disc. (My cartridge or needle died so I can't listen to it now). Jake prefers the mono to the duophonic, and at least as of a decade ago didn't realize that any stereo copies survived. The mono master tapes have also since been lost, so all reissues (legit or otherwise) are needle drops.

ok wow, so "Death Rap" is worth a couple of hundred bucks if it's original, which I'm almost certain it is. Not bad for 33 cents.

So I think The second Jerry Williams record I thought was by a band called Canyon is actually the second High Mountain Hoedown record but the group is just called High Mountain. The one I found is his third record. He also has a fourth record called 'Down Home Boy' by The Jerry Williams Group from 73 and 'Gone' from 79.
