How do we feel about Back & 4th (Hotflush) and 116 & Rising (Hessle Audio), compilations which are one disc of new material and one disc of previously released stuff?
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 8 December 2011 11:30 (twelve years ago) link
pretty sure those are cool but i'll let the ppl running it judge. i'd like to see them included, at least.

Christine Fellows - Femmes De Chez Nous
How is this? I can't remember at all but I'm sure someone hear was waxing lyrical about this somewhere!

argh! HERE not hear
It is lovely if you like that sort of thing. Which I suspect you might.

Not enjoying the patten album very much I'm afraid guys. Sounds like two IDM records being played over the top of each other.

Listening to/skimming the Spotify playlist (piracy is so old-fashioned) and really into almost nothing on ILM's track nominations list.
― Occidental Rudipherous, Thursday, 8 December 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link
Nominate some more tracks then :)
― thread of missing brony (sean doily), Thursday, 8 December 2011 16:38 (twelve years ago) link
Anyone notice that when you play the Nyan Cat! track in Spotify, the progress bar is Nyan Cat?
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 December 2011 17:07 (twelve years ago) link
WTF I didn't even know this existed. Excited.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 8 December 2011 17:23 (twelve years ago) link
Matt - really? It's worth checking out. I wrote a lengthy screed about it here.

Opal - This Me Know
I'm guessing this isn't *the* Opal. Ach, it's so easy to google potential band/artist names now (or look at last.fm), why do people just not bother?
― Illia Rump (emil.y), Thursday, 8 December 2011 19:05 (twelve years ago) link
I think people have the right to perform under their given names whether they share it with some metal band or whatever.
― furnace mane, Thursday, 8 December 2011 19:32 (twelve years ago) link
And it's like really like dancehall queens and metal bands are competing for marketshare either.
― furnace mane, Thursday, 8 December 2011 19:35 (twelve years ago) link
Opal (the original) is neither of these things, btw.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 December 2011 19:36 (twelve years ago) link
Oh alright, I shouldn't have assumed that.
― furnace mane, Thursday, 8 December 2011 19:37 (twelve years ago) link
Emily's point is valid, though. It's the easiest thing in the world now to see if anyone else has put out records using the name you want to use. If you choose to go forward at that point, be ready to make some people irritated.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 December 2011 19:38 (twelve years ago) link
Not really sure internet penetration in Jamaica is that great (a quick google search says not really, no), esp. among the poor, but OK.
― furnace mane, Thursday, 8 December 2011 19:54 (twelve years ago) link
And also, back to my other point, it's not the end of the world or even a big deal, like at all.
― furnace mane, Thursday, 8 December 2011 19:55 (twelve years ago) link
"Intentalo" comes as a breath of fresh air on this playlist. I didn't even know it was nominated. I'm still not convinced it works all that well translating tribal into pop, but I will vote for it.
― Occidental Rudipherous, Thursday, 8 December 2011 20:00 (twelve years ago) link
I am very happy with ilm's pattern of nominating pretty much every song I might want to vote for. Thanks guyz.

I think I'm back down to 15/25 as Meshell Nedgeocello had already been nominated. Apparently Wild Beasts had already been nominated too but I didn't spot them.

xpostsIf this is the Opal you meant then I think rev's point about market share is even more valid. Also, talking about originality and names in a Jamaican context is different than in other places. Ninjaman gets big, so you get Ninja Kid and Ninja Ford. Horace Hinds changed his name to Horace Andy because Bob Andy was popular; etc. It would be going well against the grain to worry about sharing a name with a late 80s psych band.

going by the arguments i've seen on luciano's last.fm page (among many others) i'd say the fans, at least, definitely mind, on all sides
― degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:23 (twelve years ago) link
that page is interesting--I wonder if last.fm will pretty much force this kind of change to happen
― rob (night house), Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:34 (twelve years ago) link
google will! i love last.fm but i'm not sure it'll ever really have the necessary sway for that. you have many situations where there are multiple artists with the same name, but if they're all confined to different locations (karizma and kingdom spring to mind) i doubt it bothers them...
