lex is right. why are we spending all this time talking about childish gambino when we could clearly talk about how insane lex is
― Mordy, Saturday, 3 December 2011 15:45 (twelve years ago) link
i once dreamed of a career in comedy but i gave it up once i realized i could never create a character as funny as the lex

if you think you get to decide that then that probably explains the root of your problem

jesus I thought you guys were cherry picking the bad lines or something like ILX can do now and then, but holy jesus, this whole verse is almost Shaquille O'Neal level rap

this friend of mine said this was his favorite rap album of the year. like I have to seriously question the friendship now.

Black Swan = generic hashtag Young Money tripe
EE cummin on her face = whose face? the beat's? Paul Barman-level one-line.
I think the bitch/dog walker one is eyerolly, the other two I don't mind.

I'm not gonna pretend to be a srs hiphop person and maybe that's part of the reason I (/the rest of the tumblr whites community) approach this differently from the goon community, but pretty much my argument begins and ends w/ "imo...some of these lines are clever"
― iatee, Saturday, 3 December 2011 18:27 (twelve years ago) link
but they're not clever, they're really basic

Like if you want comedy rap, this is at least a step above like MC LARS HORRISHIT or whatever, but there's a whole school of MCs--Copywrite, High & Mighty, Apathy, Bumpy Knuckles, J-Zone, Celph Titled, Chino XL, even Joe Buddden--that do the constant hammering-away-at-punchlines thing. Sorry they're not ADORABLE and on NBC's Pomplamoose-comedy half-hour sitcom, Tumblr whites.

'your' face, I woulda understood.

tbh I have a good amount of empathy for him when he expresses frustration with disconnect between his experiences in "black" and "white" America since I've felt a lot of those some emotions and frustrations and it's not really something you're going to understand unless you've gone through something similar, but when he starts talking about "eating Oreos like the white girls that be blowin' me" I have to tap out

yeah I think that one of the problems w/ the anti-gambino arguments ive read (which i more or less completely agree w/) is that they seem to dismiss the legitimacy of that perspective completely when it's not the rap game (per se) where 'weird' people of color who identify w/ CG might have it hard ... its HIGH SCHOOL.
of course, recognizing that he has a legit perspective & making worthwhile music are two angles that may or may not overlap
― joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 01:04 (twelve years ago) link
well part of the problem is that he seems to have not been keeping up with rap trends for the past decade, or that because he is sooooo indie, he only has a handful of rap records and doesn't know what the shit his record should sound like in 2011.
I have really been trying to let this go but I can't; fuck this abhorrent, disgusting viewpoint. Don't tell people what their shit is supposed to sound like.
― OH NOES, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link
i think most people here are totally fine with rap records with an insular or outdated aesthetic from people aren't tapped into 'what's popping in 2011' but if the lyrics are constantly positioning the artist as a breath of fresh air from what's mainstream right now then it kind of behooves the artist to know about what they're positioning themselves as an alternative to

it's like shitty alt-rock bands that were still all defensively "sorry we're not like LIMP BIZKIT" five years after bizkit's last hit
― Mr. Stevensome #dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 5 December 2011 16:06 (twelve years ago) link
'but if the lyrics are constantly positioning the artist as a breath of fresh air'
surely the first rapper to try this
― iatee, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:08 (twelve years ago) link
oh i make fun of other rappers that do this too -- drake sneering "A LOT OF Y'ALL SOUNDING LIKE LAST YEAR" over a 808s & heartbreak knockoff in 2009 was classic
― Mr. Stevensome #dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 5 December 2011 16:11 (twelve years ago) link
Criticizing someone for acting like they are revolutionary when they sound exactly like everyone else around them is one thing; a hoy hoy's statement probably meant that, but it isn't what it actually said.
― OH NOES, Monday, 5 December 2011 16:12 (twelve years ago) link
is 'what he is currently saying is not 100% true' really a tool w/ which you can critique rap music.
