how are you today?

i am... fine, i think, except i feel semi-guilty because i skipped out on a class and e-mailed the prof the paper i had due instead of handing it in like a sane person. as my self-inflicted punishment i have to go to a "career roundtable" starting in an hour and a half, and i don't particularly want to go but there may be someone there who can give me a lead on a paid internship.

i am pretty good today. woke up feeling crappy but have had a pretty productive day at work, including a fun meeting with a band, and going to see another band i work with later tonight, so we'll see. lately it seems like work really sucks at the beginning of the week, then gets better.

ah, the art of self-compromise... go to the roundtable, yeah
xpost

i am fine today (and was fine yesterday even). i went for a run (at the gym - the blowing snow and freeezang world is not so good for running in), did some yoga, read/wrote, watched Lost, watched oprah (b/c it was about psychics and talking to dead people! awesome), read more (mostly internet), am making sausages and farinata for dinner, then watch the o.c., hang out, practice singing, psychic abilities, etc.

Waiting on phone call from bossclient with final changes to magazine...got it nice and toasty in office...put feet up on desk and snored for twenty (20) minutes...

Went on a long walk this morning. It was about 25 degrees -- chilly, but there are too many people around here who live where it's REALLY cold for me to complain. It got me wondering, like in Chicago and places where your eyeballs could freeze, do people wear goggles if they have to be out walking a long way in single digits?

The PEW Research Center for Panty-Twisting (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 15 February 2007 23:30 (seventeen years ago) link

was talking with cashier in the fruiterie this morning about the cold and she said she'd seen people wearing goggles! and then i left and not 5 minutes later saw a hipster/office-worker wearing GOLD goggles!

impermanent rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 15 February 2007 23:32 (seventeen years ago) link

What is 25 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius, about -2? When growing up I was regularly subjected to -40 Celsius, and my eyes never froze. That must be a myth!

I'm batshit today. Pros/Cons:

+Grew a pair and started posting for realz.
+Parlayed said pair into meatspace extroversion, and probably found a few key folks for my next movie film.
+Train downtime = A nice hour to read Kafka on the Shore and pretend that I, too, live in a small private library and eat rice balls while devouring Soseki books.

-Roommate's rent check bounced, putting my bank account in the very red.
-Still recovering from subconsciously-enduced Valentine's sleep-a-thon.
-Stomach hates me for drinking a large black fair trade coffee without first putting food in it.
-Frozen eyballs.

Have fucking headache and am working hours that basically involve little to no human contact outside of the office each day. Haven't eaten *real* food for about a week. Actually happy despite all this.

If not for my sweet boyfriend - whose feelings I hurt by being an insensitive bitch this morning - this day might have been one that ended with my neighbors being quoted in the paper as saying, "she always seemed like such a sweet person, who knew she had it in her?"

my dad is helping me with airfare to PHX for cousin's wedding in April. I hate PHX, but have some good friends there and the weather is lovely in april.

boss is doing this thing he does every few months where he freaks out that he's slacking (we dont see much of his superiors) so he schedules all kinds of meetings where we end up discussing what we have always done but in new ways. he feels better, re-energized, and the a few months later he's back to coming in late and going home early.

(Oh, it wasn't that bad.)

I am COLD. I am also officially past deadline on a minor assignment I should have done in advance, broke, and balancing the joy of the roommate moving out in three weeks with the resulting expense. The short story I liked most was just rejected pretty harshly, and I've rewritten the chapter of the novel that caused me to be late on the other thing three times without coming up with a version I'm happy with.

But. The girlfriend's awesome, grocery shopping and Amazon brought major material pleasures (monkfish, duck, Ramsey Campbell, H.P. Lovecraft, Cherry Coke Zero), Lost is back and Friday Night Lights isn't cancelled yet, and when the roommate's gone I will resume my tangential position to the ongoing drama of my family.

i am better. got a free dinner at the roundtable thing (dinner = a couple of mini-wraps, some swedish meatballs, and a diet sprite), met some good people, and had a great workout at the gym later. ran into a friend there and we decided we're going to become GYM BUDDIES together. i'm glad cuz she's in awesome shape and i need inspiration.

I feel quiet, for a change...? Reading Craig Childs book about giving your mind up to the desert, making the boundaries of personhood more and more porous...it's lending me some perspective but also propping me open to all kinds of excess of feeling, liable to be overwhelmed all the time. O cycles. Hard to be in the busy, noisy city today, taking it all in is so much work but I don't want to close the door.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 16 February 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

i had a CRAZY dream last night and woke up very unsettled! it wasn't a scary dream, but a really vivid and action-packed one. it's long and complicated, but it ends when some guys with superpowers who've finally been defeated and left to die at sea on a grim prison boat are tagged as dead and tossed into the water, where we see their souls arise and hurtle up into space on a trip to heaven. heaven's great but these guys are troublemakers and want to see the "girls" in hell, so they fly around some more and find the secret door to hell. i wake up when they're being chased around by the meanie hell baddies and trying to escape back to heaven.

Blah. This past week has been pretty shitty. My Gram passed away on Valentine's day and am now planning a trip back up to Buffalo for the memorial service. I've been cooking a lot though, reading Pema Chodron, and knitting, so things are getting better. I've had a constant headache for the past week, and am thinking some rye may be the perfect medicine (when I get home from work, of course).

molly mummenschanz (molly d), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks, Laurel. You're the best. Knitting will come first, then drinking. The two, when mixed, have disastrous results.

Seeing as was on about concerts here...

Last night I saw Bowling for Soup/Wheatus/Son of Dork.

Son of Dork are truly awful. I enjoyed BFS, and got to sing along to "Teenage Dirtbag". Anyway, the point of the story is, I was standing near a fruit machine, and two horrible teenage dudes (emo hair, skinny jeans, bright t-shirts) approached us, and one of them motioned me to move with a parting of the red sea gesture - in order to retrieve a can of Tennants with a straw in!!! The uncouth pair proceeded to drink from the can and sort of dance in front of me and my pal, before going away. I was very much affronted by their rudeness, but why the hell did I get out of their way in the first place?
