actually the title has a double meaning you see, because not only is his character a farmer, but his name is charles farmer.

I'm almost tempted to see this, just out of sheer curiosity about how they evade or brush over the, umm, ridiculous implausibility of it.

I like the bit of the ad where he's being questioned by some sort of congressional subcomittee (?) and they're like "how do we know you're not making some kind of WMD?" and he says "because if I were making a WMD, you wouldn't be able to find it," which I'm pretty sure is meant to be funny and endearing, how he's zinging the man like that.

But so that suggests that this movie actually does try to explain away the ridiculousness of a lone private citizen successfully engineering a safe manned rocket, and doesn't (for instance) try to pretend that farmers can buy immense qualities of high-grade rocket fuel without some extraordinary rendition on the horizon. The best I can guess is that, you know, he captures the public's hearts and imaginations so thoroughly that no one can risk stopping him, kind of like NORAD's long-running truce with Santa Claus.

maybe he's just growing astronauts on his farm

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:32 (seventeen years ago) link

how do they get the rocket fuel in 'explorers'?

and what (ooo), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:33 (seventeen years ago) link

They don't have a rocket in Explorers, they have MAGIC COMPUTER PROGRAM.

My school had a little shindig where they showed it and afterwards the Polish Brothers, Billy Bob, and Virginia Madsen did a little Q&A. The movie itself is yawn-enducing boilerplate "follow your dreams" stuff, but it's beautifully shot.

The Q&A was terrible. Bunch of starfuckers giving the film and each person on stage a standing ovation (all in all, seven). In a room full of film students, someone actually asked "What was the significance of the wedding ring?" To Madsen's credit, she looked at the questioner dumbly and said "...we were married."

so you actually saw this? how do they deal with the rocket fuel thing?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:59 (seventeen years ago) link

That's actually one of the main stumbling blocks for Billy. There's a scene with a shady dude going "you need how much?

SPOILER, IF FOR SOME REASON YOU CARE

His father in law ends up dying, and he uses the inheritance to buy the fuel from said shady dude and launches while his illegal immigrant farmhand distracts the FAA agents.
